The best thing is that both of their stories match up, and they both feel it was the greatest at bat of all time. And it's also nice to see how humble Gagne is about losing this particular shootout.
@Stormie33 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly, Bonds has claimed it was supposed to be only fastballs and that he got pissed when Gagne threw him that one breaking ball, so one of them either misremembers the rules or is lying about what they were.
@ahogg5960 Жыл бұрын

Bonds is the goat, loved this duel... but the underrated topic is how nasty and perfect that backdoor curve was... like jesus it was filthy. 98 mph fball to a 78mph curve..so dirty. That rings up or gets outs 99% of all major league hitters. Again, Bonds was so incredible to watch.

Great story, and great interview. It was never proven that Barry Bonds took steroids but I can tell you even if he did, it might’ve given him an advantage to hit the ball farther, but he was already the best player this game has ever seen. With every one else that I’ve been in the steroids and has been on steroids since, he was the most scrutinized and it was very unfair. There will never be another Barry bonds. Mark McGwire in his best years never even came close to the talent Barry bonds was!!!

Wasn't really a REAL 1 on 1 duel where Barry asked for a handicap. Let Eric have his full pitch arsenal, and choice of when he throws them then it's actual talent vs talent. This was just a stacked deck. All Barry had to do was get past the 1 breaking ball and he knew what the rest of the pitches would be.

I heard a different version of the story where gagne told bonds he was only gonna throw one off speed, cause he was overconfident about his fastball. He thought he was gonna strike him out with the back door curve, and shit himself when he realized he could only throw fastballs for the rest of the at bat. The language barrier must have been "you only get 1" barry meant fastballs. "You only get one no changeups" eric not speaking English-speaking the same as now thinks ok I get one off speed all fastballs the rest. Thinking bonds knew he had a little slow curve (which he rarely threw) Growing up in different places speaking different languages i can see how it would happen.

I love the gentleman’s agreements in baseball, but in this situation, it just seems unfair. Bonds demands he pitch to him but he takes his best pitch away from him and just sits on fastballs? Pretty typical Bonds behavior. Cheat to get the edge.
@anthonygreen77632 жыл бұрын
how is that cheating? He wanted full power vs full power and Gagne agreed. Gagne choose to not pitch everything, Bonds had no control over that.
@thehaughtcorner Жыл бұрын
Exactly. If you can load up your swing, knowing you won't get offspeed, that makes it a lot easier than wondering if you will get 100 or 75.
