I have watched a marathon from season 1 to 5 and then I look up the fan stuff and ask. Wait who? They never did anything in the show! How do you know their names!, they never said anything about them! A reference I spotted in '' Where the Apple lies'' was the twins from ''The Shining'' It is a newer episode but when Applejack is walking through the halls of the hospital to the lecture hall for a few frames they are in the background staring right at the camera.

There is also a reference to "The Shining" in "Where the apple lies" where when they go to the hospital, there is a pair of identical ponies who are dressed like the Siamese twins.

Also, there is a Shining reference in the episode where Apple Bloom learns about the lie that ended up almost ruining the Apple-Rich trades. There are two twins standing right next to one another, staring into the camera and smiling. Just for a second, though.

I'm not sure about it (since it would be a pretty obscure reference, even for an older brony) but Discord's current nice behavior seems sort of familiar. Much as classic "bad" Discord's behavior seems to be heavily influenced by that of Star Trek's Q (naturally), current nicer discord seems to me to be taking it's inspiration from another animated dragon; Burgess Meredith's portrayal of Puff the Magic Dragon in the cartoon movies done in the late 70's. There even seems to be one direct reference; when Discord eats the salad made of paper (in the opening of the second or third movie, Puff reveals that he likes to dine on homework.)

When Rarity's cat is pursuing a little pony, I like to believe that it is a reference from a little cat that dreams the exact same thing, except that the kitty is dreaming on pursuing humans xD.
