What a fascinating, outstanding and informative review. I recently sold my Rolex steel and gold Submariner date it sat in a safety deposit box for nearly twenty years as I considered it too valuable to wear based on where I live. I very recently bought a Steeldive 1953 which I wear regularly without reservation. Since discovering these Chinese made 'homage' watches there is now no going back for me I have already added many Pagani's etc to my collection. 👍👍

Agreed, The Pagani and similar are of great value. However, with Rolex, you can park your Capital and get it back at a later date should the need arise. Akin to art work, real-estate and precious metals.

Best review I have ever seen for any product period! For a Rolex owner you certainly did not have a biased opinion. Very well done, Sir. What really got me is when you mentioned the very little known fact that Rolex is a nonprofit organization that obviously is set up to avoid paying high taxes. In doing so, they can pay their executives insanely high salaries. (as long as they don’t show a profit) I have no problem with companies paying high salaries but don’t do it under the guise of being a not for profit company. When you think of nonprofit organizations you think of churches etc… not luxury watch companies.

I know a person who bought a Rolex and I got my son a Pagani! It is super nice and did not ding the wallet, also he wears it to school every day and is not worried about scratching or causing any wear to the watch. A Rolex would be locked in my jewelry case if I owned one!!! LOL.

A very thorough, well reasoned and fair review 👍 . Is the Rolex better, yes, but the Pagani gets remarkably close for 1/10 the price of a Rolex service! I wore a Datejust for over 20 years daily and it was a great watch, but the price of servicing rose from £150 to £500+. Some poor customer service made me realise that there are many other companies out there making watches with similar capabilities to Rolex for a fraction of the cost. I won't wear a homage, so a Pagani isn't for me, but I am now enjoying wearing an alternative automatic watch that cost under £100.

Over the years I have owned several Submariner Date's. However since the internet, the grey market has negatively changed Rolex AD's. Also from the ceramic era 2010's onwards; the Submariner Date changed from being a well made tool watch; to being an investment piece, flipped on the grey market at profit, rather than a piece worn by collectors worn for a lifetime and passed down to their son. I am guilty of this myself as I sold my Hulk in 2018 at profit, and also my 114060 in 2019. I then used to the profit to buy this 116610LN. So I like the watch, but abhor the Rolex AD's for directly supplying grey market dealers, and VIP customers; rather than genuine collectors. However one has to accept that is just the way the watch market is now. Regards.

Good to hear you made money on your Rolex watches, mine is quite battered and Rolex over polished the case before I realised I should tell them not to. The jubilee literally wore out, so it wouldn't sell for much even if I wanted to sell it.

I have had my Rolex 16613 Submariner since 1998. My newest daily driver is a SteelDive SD 1953 (Submariner homage, all green HULK face/dial) for US$100 with an after-market all-brushed solid link bracelet for another $28. Honestly...and I really like my Rolex...the SteelDive is an absolute pleasure to own. Ceramic bezel-check. Sapphire crystal-check. Dependable automatic mechanism (Seiko NH 35A)-check. Excellent watch and terrific value-for-money...no question about that. I spent about $1100 late last year to have my Rolex serviced...it required some serious maintenance after all of these years of routine use. It came back like new.

I think its a growing trend, Rolex owners buying low-tier brands made in China. Chinese made watches have really improved in quality in recent years. The other factor is Rolex watches have changed into investment pieces, which has reduced the feel good factor of wearing them. I like my PD-1661. Soon it will be three years since I started using it.The appearance of the Rolex Submariner is copied by many "common" manufacturers like Orient, Casio, so I don't feel like I'm using a "fake" Rolex. Affordable quality, for an affordable price. Buying a Rolex Submariner only makes sense when you buy it for investment or you want to snoop.

Nice to see some honest opinions expressed for a change, Even the highest tier watch snob has to appreciate how much watch you can get now for very little money. Can't go wrong with the budget Seiko or miyota movements as well, They are reliable workhorses. I only own one watch; my Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41. However I also appreciate low-tier, and mid-tier pieces too. I have reviewed everything on my channel from a 10 Euro Casio F-91W to my Rolex Submariner Date. I give every watch a fair chance to meet my criteria of being; "both excellent quality and excellent value at the respective price point". A Rolex fanboy would never admit the PD-1661 is a good watch for under 100 Euro; but that is the reality. You make a good point about; "less worry about losing or being stolen etc." The truth is, there is more feel good factor wearing a piece one doesn't have to worry about. Damaging or losing a PD-1661 is no problem, as they are inexpensive to replace. That means one can really relax and enjoy wearing the watch. Ironically sometimes the least expensive watch can give the most feel good factor. Regards.

My Pagani had extremely sharp case corners which required stoning and sanding to make it wearable. The lume is trash which is a huge disappointment. The performance has consistently maintained accuracy at roughly 3 secs per day out of the box. It's a very good watch for the money.

My thing is that I get the Rolex has a better movement, but outside of that, the other that looks exactly the same can be had for $75 to $100. With that said, even if it breaks after some years, you could just easily buy another! The only thing the Rolex has going for it is that it could increase in value or at least hold most of its value and you can sell it later.

Awesome review , , , i just ordered a PAGANI SUBMARINER from ALIEXPRESS and it is on it's way to me as we speak , , i really like your honesty and judgement of the watches and it makes your review even more honest and impressive because you actually own a real ROLEX SUBMARINER , , , and i agree with you the Rolex should not be priced at around $ 10 , 000 dollars , , , probably paying most of that for the name as well , , , you also picked up on/noticed something i think Rolex is overlooking and that is the back of the watch , , why Rolex would not display the internal workings of the watch with a clear display back is beyond me , , , i think that is a real oversight on their part , , , they are missing a big opportunity to display/show-case more of the watch .

Thanks for the comparison. I want a Rolex homage and have had hard to decide between Steinhart and Squale. Steinhart is since many years criticized for too straight lugs and Squale is criticized for bad lume. Pagani has better lug design than Steinhart and maybe not better lume than Squale. For the price of 1 Steinhart or Squale I get 3 or 4 Paganis! And by looking on the video I can see that Pagani has a great finish for the price. Adding to that a Seiko movement, sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel: Pagani is a bargain!

I like strong lume but it's not very important. And for the price of Pagani: there are bracelets more expensive than the price of a complete Pagani watch! I really can overlook a bad lume in this case.

@@patricj951 The NH35A is made in Japan. It is reliable. The Pearl DG5833GMT movement is made in China. It is the luck of the draw if one gets a good or bad one. The build quality, and Quality Control, are not as good. Regards, #WR4K

@@watchreviews4k It has another movement, the Miyota Caliber 8215. Testing the reliability and accuracy of that movement. My first impression is that it is a solid movement. Miyota is a Citizen related company, so good value there, In one day it is impossible to see any time difference. From what I see I would say 5 sec per day difference. Same as your watch. The looks of the PD-1661: excellent!

I record my videos in one take, and upload them with no editing whatsoever. Even then one video takes 2 hours to upload and process to 4K. I don't have time to record, upload, and edit reviews. I really like the review. Not only because you don't straight up bash the clone, rather treating it as any other watch, comparing to Rolex, but also because it feels honest. Rolex uses their own, probably patented way of adding the platinum to the ceramic, which is technologically very impressive, but you are "tbh, I like this paint on a 80 dollar watch ". This review is probably as honest as it gets. Watching some others', the movement is "I don't know how robust it is" but when it's exactly the same movement in a branded watch - "you know it's Seiko's movement, it's robust, c'mon". Or "I recommend a watch with heritage" vast vast majority of people buying don't care about heritage, as they shouldnt imo, you are buying a watch, not the company. Same way as ordinary people don't care about the 2 or 4 or however much mm difference. People are buying designer watches that look like a plate on their wrist, yet they think it looks good. This "everyday watches need to be under 52mm lug to lug or 42 or under in diameter" bs doesn't exist outside of our watch world. Anyway, thanks for the review. It was great.

Watch Reviews 4K btw do you know if the bezel mechanism(?) can be modded/replaced? As in keeping the bezel and the insert, but mod it so it sounds and operates in a more pleasing way, also to deal with backplay. Have only seen people changing the insert or the bezel itself.

This prises the bezel off with four equal pressure points; which avoids deformation. Using a case knife at one point requires more leverage, therefore denting the case, and deforming the bezel. If my video titles, and keyword hashtags were "Seiko modding" rather than "Pagani Design modding" they would gain more views, as the algorithms rank Seiko content higher than Pagani Design content. The thumbnail doesn't make any difference to the ranking. The algorithms weight the content on a number of factors; number of interactions, number of searches, number of likes, like to dislike ratio, number of views, number of impressions. All of these push the content up the rankings, regardless of what the thumbnail, or keyword hashtags are. Regards.

I remember years ago they had these cheap Rolex knock offs but the quality was very poor. Just bought a Pagani and like this video described the quality is superb. Let me tell you Rolex is in trouble. For those who wants a Rolex, they will still buy one but for me I rather buy ten Pagani than an overpriced Rolex today.

Very interesting and enlightening video John, It is rather disappointing that the interior of the Rolex Glidelock is not finished to a high standard. As to regards to accuracy. Had Pagani Design regulated the watch to five positions, they could have attained a similar accuracy to the Rolex. For the money they’re asking for their watches they should be able to deliver something truly impressive. The cyclop used to be a differentiator. Most of the homages used a lower magnification cyclop. This one seems to be on par with the Rolex but it looks like it is slightly mis-aligned with the date window.

The only difference as far as I'm concerned is that you can sell the Rolex and hopefully make some money, well as for the pagani should may get half your money back on ebay.. Even if I was a millionaire I would still buy the pagani, I own a pagani and they are great watches . Probably the best budget watch out there for what you get!!

Very excellent and comprehensive comparison. I like haw you compared the actual physical value towards the end of the video, and respective profit margins. That turns many non-snobs from Rolex. I myself have a beloved Datejust, but recently with no loss of pride purchased an excellent quality replica ("fake") Submariner for $50USD delivered, skipping the homage options completely, to somewhat so to say... punish Rolex. I do not scuba dive, but use it snorkeling to several metres depth. I also have livestock and it has come into contact with high pressure hose water streams. There has been no ill effects so far. I also have a bit of fun with friends before I chuckle and tell them what I paid for it.
