Another fine example of Wes Working and going into great details as to how the process works, how to troubleshoot the item and also not being afraid to show a shortcut or an item that may have been able to been cleaned and reused saving a little part replacement expense. Thanks Wes

Congratulations on your patience to actually find the problem, the difference between a true mechanic and parts replacer. Yes I understand the economics of shop rate to replace a part/unit vs finding the actual problem. Good work.

Hey Wes,I'm a long time watcher of your videos...just got placed into a position out of my comfort level, being a mechanic on class 7 and 8 trucks...I'm a Transport Canada trained and certified tank Inspector, for fuel and oil tankers...now have been hired as a multipurpose floor guy, and apparently expected to be a heavy duty mechanic among other duties. Just want to say, appreciate your videos...this one with the purge valve, actually matches my first task tomorrow...thank you, sir...

HEY THANKS!!! That little chunk in the check valve gave me hope that I could fix mine after hours on a Friday night without needing parts. Sure enough, mine had a bunch of filter material stuck in there. I have been going crazy listening to that thing. Every 30 seconds at idol, sure.... But every 8 seconds at highway speed!!! Plus it had an extra loud "whistle hiss" that about gave me a heart attack while I was hooking up trailers. Thanks so much! My weekend trucking will be so much more serene.

Same problem on my 06 international 9400, I replaced the whole dryer so the check valve should be good right but it's still purging every 30 secs. Should I just try adjusting the air pressure because right now I'm sitting at about 130/135 psi.

Spare self-rebuilt parts are valuable, save it! The time and money spent on your diagnosis and repair, priceless! Now u know. how about periodic maintenance to clean and inspect? you will save money in the long run with this knowledge. Also, using the right tools for the job (NOT using that adjustable wrench) is key for not damaging a perfectly reusable part (saves money) and demonstrates professionalism! good job, mechanic!

All underground telephone cables are under dry air pressure. The dryers function pretty close to how yours functions. A system that purges constantly is usually (in my experience) a solenoid valve that is stuck and needs to be rebuilt. Air dryers make me a lot of money - they tend to go into alarm in the middle of the night and I get called out to go fix them.

I think the soft seats were used in the earliest version of the AD-9. I recall when they first came out, there was a problem with leaking purge valves and the repair parts weren't available for quite some time. We needed to keep trucks on the road so we traded the Bendix dryers in on Haldex and Midland. We found them to be more trouble free and much easier to work on and we never went back to Bendix.

Hi wes great vid. Being a mechanic myself (30yrs).seen alot of air dryer issues.and how they have changed .but the concept is the Same. a constant purging dryer irritates me.at the same time causes compressor to cycle more.i find it to be the signal line(RES port on gov to wet tank) leaking down .I use soapy water on this line(only when air dryer purges).wet tank supplies air to Governor RES port. For anybody interested Google. Bendix air dryers.and look at images. There drivers. Owner ops. Mech.can identify.what air dryer they have.A very informative site.i still use it myself.

I worked on a truck I was rebuilding and ran into the compressor not unloading. The governor worked as advertised. The dryer worked as advertised but when unloaded you could hear the compressor still pumping. In the end, it was a stuck unloader in the compressor that was bad. Free up the stuck unloader piston and problem solved. The engine was an NTC 400 Big Cam III in a GMC Brigadeer. It was a big project. Started with a cab on the chassis. The engine on the ground. No trans. It had been a single rear axle road tractor. The engine was rebuilt by others. I installed the engine along with an Allison 754 trans. Had to fabricate new rear engine mounts as the ones for the manual trans didn't fit. I also stretched the frame and installed tandem rear axles. One big project. I also installed a power steering box in place of the original manual one. I enjoyed the challenge at the time but I sure don't miss it anymore. Ultimately we installed a new Leach trash body on it.

Just something else to ponder 🤔 in an air loss situation. If the truck just won't hold air very long. An you just can't hear or find a leak. Replace the cloth air line from the dryer to the bugle line, going to the compressor. Overtime the line becomes baked from heat an starts to leak through the cloth. Can't hear it but it's there. Hope this may also help someone.

For customers that don't have time for downtime like the guy I drive for he gets new or reman parts and I get a new toy to take apart and figure out what it's failure points are and what causes them like the homemade log truck project he bought. I think it was tied with your project in terms of electrical splices and corrosion from test light jabs. Glad he let me do it my may and start fresh instead of "fixing" it with more splices. He isn't scared of spending money on inventory either.

I replaced the governor on the compressor and the issue didn't resolve. If I'm understanding your video correctly the only likely culprit now is the air lines possibly leaking between the unloader and the tank or the unloader and the dryer? Air Dryer can only hold so much moisture. When the Incandescent beads soak up all they can. That is when you have air dryer issues. Most people only think about this part. When it messes up, when that cartridge being changed out. Would save all the issues. On some of the cartridge's like yours. You can dry out the Incandescent beads. I was working on a 2000 379 Pete with 12.7 Detroit and that Truck had those cloth wrapped hoses. You couldn’t hear a leak and it was very slow took me a while to find it I found it by accident while I was pressure washing the truck as soon as the soapy water hit that line about 2 feet of it just foamed up. You couldn’t hear the leak but you could definitely see it so I always made sure on any truck that had those lines especially going to the fan clutch Because it seems like every one of them was bad when I started checking. I would degrease them once a month with air pressure in the system and run the truck a little and look for any foaming air lines. Found quite a few leaks that way.

Wow, great walk through! I have a 92 international bus that's purging every 30 seconds, it also seems to leak after I shut it off. First time I heard it, I thought there was a wounded animal nearby lol, it's a very faint squeak, kinda like the dying witch on wizard of oz 😁. Took it to a local diesel shop and they told me I needed a new air dryer, no filter on mine BTW. I'm just wondering now if they checked the valves....i didn't know the squeaky sound after shut down wasn't normal.

I do not even give the owner the option to "rebuild" the dryer. I live in Michigan, and with the salt and neglect the dryer usually sees. I just replace the whole unit. It just saves time and labor like you said

Eventually the aluminum base casting will corrode and will no longer hold air. At that point you have to replace the whole thing. I've seen them corrode clear through the mounting holes.

Wes, did you kiss that check valve? That's why it re-seated. :) Most of these repairs are due to daily maintenance, or not doing it. The compressor is the most important part IMO, so that dirt floating around on the purge and/or unloader is gonna get to the compressor. Keep it clean.

The compressor builds air pressure until all tanks are at 125psi, the compressor has a control line going to the governor pushing the piston up to put the compressor into its unloading stage so no further pressure can build up in the tanks. Once it reaches max pressure the air dryer always purges after that the compressor should not go into its load phase until the tanks drop to 105psi if it does your governor is out of adjustment. If the truck is idling parked it should never lose pressure (unless you have a leak or use air from the system)

Cody Sinclair my tanks are building to 135psi and there’s kind of a ringing sound that comes from underneath the cab, which goes away when you pump the brakes down. Thoughts?

John Gaughan Is it audible regardless of how much pressure is in the tanks ?
@jgpix1
@jgpix1 4 жыл бұрын
Cody Sinclair no the whistle / hiss sound will stop if pressure drops to normal 120 like when you pump the brakes or push in the parking brake. But it comes back when tanks build pressure to 135 (too high)
@jgpix1
@jgpix1 4 жыл бұрын
Cody Sinclair but also when I set the parking brake there will be a whole bunch of air exhausting from right under the cab. Lasts 10-12 seconds. Definitely not normal and has been getting worse over the past week or so

John Gaughan Normally the tanks on trucks will have a pop off valve/ pressure relief valve that fully open at 150psi so it’s possible the extra 10psi is slightly opening it causing a small “leak” also the parking brake being slow to fully engage causing a long bleed time may have something to do with your spring brake valve exhaust being plugged up or kinked it could be the valve isn’t good anymore as well

The best spitter I ever saw was on my 79 LNT 9000. I don't know what brand it is, it is slightly smaller than a desiccant dryer. It's got fins all over it and it looks like a little still. Never had any trouble with it since it was new, and the truck never freezes up.

I believe that's a CR Air dryer. Pretty much trouble free.it has no desiccant. Just plastic dividers. Basically the aluminum fin is sort of a cooler. Air enters/cools/condenses/dry air enters service tanks. I believe back in the day they had alcohol injection after the air dryer. For colder climates. Hopefully this helps

On the last 2 out of 6 AD9 air dryers that I have taken apart. The cartridge has been unscrewed just sitting in there. I can’t give you any history on them, those 2 trucks my boss just bought. They came from different states, North Dakota, Idaho. Different truck companies. But odd 2 air dryers with a unscrewed cartridge. I started putting liquid thread sealer on to the cartridge threads to stop them from unscrewing. Anyone else ever found this? One mechanic said that he had found 4 unscrewed, does not think that any of the mechanics that worked any one of these could have worked on another. Are they not being tightened from the factory or a rebuilder? Thank you for the idea, our one semi is almost doing this. Hello from north east Montana.
