For whatever reason, those earlier Ford OBD-2 systems just don't seem to communicate very fast. If you got a lot of PIDs going at once, they really slow down. I found that if you turn off the PIDs you don't really need, the refresh rate goes way up. I usually try to keep it to no more than 3 or 4 PIDs at a time with those EEC-V Fords.

Wes when I first started in the service station business (1962) and I was 15 years old. You can do the math but I’m an old fart. One one of the first jobs I worked on was a car with no fuel getting to the carb. My boss said check it out carefully and thoroughly so no time was wasted. I think it was a GM car as the fuel pump was lever driven from an eccentric mounted on the upper large timing gear. I diagnosed it as a bad fuel pump. I went through 6 pumps and a lot of grief from the boss but it turned out there was a bad run of pumps and I was correct! It taught me a lesson I never forgot😢! Best Regards Fred Thomas
@spelunkerd2 жыл бұрын
After a humbling misadventure I now routinely change plugs and maybe even wires whenever I change a coil. When a plug goes open, it causes huge spikes of voltage on the secondary line. The insulation of the coil can't handle the voltage, and it jumps the closest gap, frying any nearby insulation. I don't know if that is the most common cause of coil failure but it's up there. It could be intermittent so you can't rely on a scope to tell you the plug is bad. To make things worse, parts companies put new looking returned coils right back on the shelf.

On industrial engines the parts situation is horrible. Had a K-21 with a bad cam sensor. ( Easy diagnosis ) Replaced the sensor , no change. My guy wasted the next 4 hours on site in front of the customer trying to figure out what he had missed. After a talk with him on the phone we decided the new cam sensor was bad , ordered another. He went back the next day , no change. Customer is now screaming mad , so I go there myself...I'm pretty sure its still the cam sensor. So I walk over to another running unit the customer had , pulled its cam sensor out and used it. The K-21 fired right up. Keep in mind that all of this happened right in front of the customer. So rather than risk a "third strike" I went back to the shop and grabbed a cam sensor out of one of our rental units. It took three more tries to get a cam sensor that worked in our rental unit. Four bad cam sensors in a row. So the customers truck was down an extra 3 days , then our rental was down another 5 days before we got a good cam sensor and with 10 hours on site and 6 travel hours that we just had to eat. So...now I test our new cam, crank ,mass airflow and other sensors in a running engine before I drive out to a customer.

Just in case it ever comes up The Nissan K21 and K25 have helical gear driven cams. As the engines age the helical gear causes the cam to retreat into the block bout .003" The original cam sensor starts failing at that point. So Nissan redesigned their cam sensor to have a wider operating range and didnt remove their original defective cam sensors from the supply chain. Nice. Fortunately the new redesigned sensors are aluminum clad instead of all plastic so its easy to tell if you got the new ones.

The lean codes on my 2000 F150 4.2 was that every vacuum line was rotted. The worst was the pcv valve up by the firewall on the passenger side. There is a rubber elbow because the valve is so darn close to the firewall.
@pgmurray762 жыл бұрын
Cheap ass Ford molded the rubber vacuum line that runs over the top of the engine. The front passenger corner splits on the mold mark and sucks inward. Massive vacuum loss. O2 codes and more. So cheap. Nissan used solid aluminum tubing on their equivalent vacuum lines for the V6 engines. Now I know why.

Welcome to the "bathtub curve" for reliability. Parts fail right away when they are new because they are made wrong, and after a long time because they wear out. Old Harleys with condensers had this problem decades ago. A pal explained that there was no car company with million-dollar contracts for condensers anymore. Those car companies ran incoming inspection and kept the parts company half-honest. Now the parts companies just make junk in foreign countries and it is on us to suffer the consequences. After I get a condenser work for a few thousand miles, I replace it and put the known-good one in the tool bag. That way I always have a working backup handy. Great diagnostics. I marvel at how you can sort through dozens of failure codes and narrow down to the ones that really matter.

I'd have put a built Wildcat in it myself instead of that boat anchor LS, but it's his car and not mine. Was somewhat surprised to hear people were complaining about it though. Don't really see a problem with putting modern GM engines in old GM vehicles. It was when he announced he was putting the same boat anchor in that sweet old Ford pickup that I unsubscribed. My mom had a car just like that Buick back in the mid seventies, when it was just a really used, really cheap car. It was a sleeper with a really big V-8, which was way too much car for her. Unfortunately, the frame was rusted out under the trunk, and it didn't pass PA state inspection, so it went on down the road. If it has frame twist, check below the trunk, right about the area of the rear window.

As a Hail of Mary I replaced the coil pack with one for $25 on eBay and presto, I got lucky. Everyday MPG jumped to 22.

Hi Wes, love your videos!! This was a doosie for sure!! A couple recommendations for a big misfire issue like this: Double check the spark plug gaps, to make sure they are in spec. Also, inspect/replace the wires if suspect. Now....the wires sure looked fairly new/replaced already, but if they look like crap; just replace them. The next thing is to clear the codes out of the computer. When a vehicle has been driven for a bit of miles with a misfire, the pcm/ecm trains the spark time, and a misfire can lead to a longer burn time. This longer burn time can eat up new coils or if equipped; cap and rotor. The coils can overheat by burning longer/higher amp draw by a misfiring condition that goes on without being dealt with. I did a 2012 F150 with coil on plug, the lady who owned it had the plugs over worn by 2.5 the gap spec. I told her that she should invest in all new 8 coil-on-plugs along with new plugs, due to the stress the coil-on-plugs had to endure with thousands of miles of over-firing. The total bill would have ended up costing over $900.00. I also said that she can do just the 8 plugs, but she will have to pay parts and labor for each and every coil that fails, and they could fail at anytime. The cost of doing a pm pals in comparison to the damage caused by neglected maintenance.

That coil looks exactly like the one my 2003 taurus with the 3.0 uses. I get about 5-6 years out of a coil. The last one had a crack in the electronic potting material that they fill the bottom of the coil up with, directly under the coil that was giving me trouble! Moisture ingress, no doubt... The other cylinder across from it was also misfiring. As soon as I saw that scan data on the Solus, I said "Case closed! Time for a new coil!" 🤪

Wes, the aftermarket coils are notoriously bad, even the “high performance” ones. Really need to go OEM if you can. This truck will be back. One of the commenters below mentioned a vacuum elbow. I had one that cracked and gave me lean codes. Quick fix if you can find one.

I like to share this misfire story. My '82 Escort (ugh) would sometimes stall at idle when it was half warmed up. Cold or hot was fine. I had just replaced the plug cables, rotor and cap. So I figured it was related to that. It turned out that I had misrouted the plug wires. They were going to the correct cylinders, but adjacent firing order cables are not supposed to run close to each other because the spark can be induced from one to the other. I figured it out when my timing light showed a double flash on two cylinders. Rerouting the cables fixed it.

I have a 2001 F150 w/5.4l 2V. Not a spot of rust anywhere. It looks like new owing to the fact that my father stored it in the winters. We live in Michigan and like Illinois, the salt just wrecks vehicles. Seeing this '01 makes me so grateful he did that. I keep telling him to watch this channel, too. Hearing that suffering 6 makes me glad he ordered the 5.4l too! Nice vid, Wes. I learn so much here!

You'd think the scan tools would have a "disable seatbelt/door chime" option when you plug them in.

But, but, the chime is for _SAFETY_ !!11!! 😀

Just disable the damn thing forever. Instructions are in the owner's manual, takes all of 5 minutes.

Another great vid as always plus the added bonus of a Thomas Mortske cameo, that Ls Buick is cool though.

I like that Buick, even with the one tire fire option.

Hey Wes! Good source of info gave me a thing from ford. That they know of V8 misfire problem…(not easily found)…it is in the harness wire connectors are junk ! They have a replacement kit just because it is so common! Of the connects-have to replace….

Poor parts make extra work, that extra work is not paid for, plus the to and fro for the parts! Hope you have a better week.

Uninvited/unexpected visitors are definitely a complement. As for the flex on that sedan...YIKES!!! At least it has some brakes, and "PUP" APPROVED! 🗽🇺🇸✔️💯

Without even recognizing that Buick, I knew exactly who it was going to be rolling in your driveway😆

Wes with the early 2000s Fords just click the seat belt button without the seatbelt in to get them to stop beeping. It just works lol…

I sure hope you can file labor claims with these parts stores. I could do that with every vendor I purchased from. Absolutely ridiculous that a new part doesn't mean a damn thing. Another great Video.

The benefit of a silver vehicle is they sell patch panels by the roll.
