Water castle Hagenwil and Berlingen, Canton of Thurgau

Hagenwil Castle, a moated castle, is located in the municipality of Hagenwil near Amriswil in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland. With its rich history dating back to the 13th century, Schloss Hagenwil is breathtaking in its architecture and surroundings.
From the hill on the north side, the castle offers a beautiful view of Lake Constance and the German mountains in the distance.
Rudolf von Hagenwil is said to have participated in the Crusade of Frederick II, and later donated most of his possessions to the monastery of St. Gallen.
In 1405, the castle was besieged by soldiers from the city of St. Gallen during the Appenzell Wars, but they were unable to capture it. In the Thirty Years' War in 1633, the castle was plundered by Swedish soldiers during the siege of Konstanz.
The well-known Abbot Gallus had the castle converted into a summer residence for the monks, and this is reflected in the year 1741 engraved on the main entrance.
After the monastery was abolished, the then mayor of the town bought Hagenwil Castle. Today it is in the seventh generation of ownership by the family, who run a restaurant in the castle, among other things. Other parts of the castle are inhabited.
Visitors can enjoy the beautiful gardens, the fascinating interior of the castle and the numerous cultural events that take place throughout the year. As in the whole canton of Thurgau, agriculture is also well developed here. The surrounding hills are covered with orchards, and cows and goats graze peacefully around the castle.
The castle is located on the historic old Konstanzerstrasse, a route that has been documented since the 9th century. It passes close to today's motorway.
