Isn't is a bit overkill? I mean, when your cooling system is 10x the size of your computer, there's a problem! lol You could probably get similar results just by using a bigger heat-sink. What makes the raspberry pi so interesting is its low price, its small size and its low power consumption. Three things that your water-cooling system is killing! I hope you don't expect this setup to run on batteries for a long period of time...

In this case, yes. But playing with it in a situation like this will save you the trial and error or doing it in a larger use situation like maybe making a Raspberry Pi cluster, where the temps likely get much higher due to the multiple boards in close proximity.

Its has a piece of shit CPU that comes from and old LG smartphone. Like how much better can u do. I'm only think about it bc it runs linux and what ever u want it to. Its a tiny lil thing I can travel easy with and hook it up to my tv where ever I go. But fact of the matter is its a 40 dollar micro pc and he overkilled the thing lol. He tried to sound smart. @checkforfleas9452
@checkforfleas9452 6 жыл бұрын
@@gavinfaync yea it is completely pointless to water cool a raspi. I mean if water cooling a pc works for u. Be my guest. I use to swear by water cooling until my brain got to thinking. It does work yes. But, in all reality it takes longer to heat up the liquid and once it does get to that certain consistent temp. That's where it will stay. But, there's so many factors. In my opinion it doesn't work for me. Now mind u. These are all theories that people have. The only way to tell is to buy all of them and test yourself. Now. It does work great for open air PC. Obviously. So yes I would use it if I did that most certainly. I love my cooler master vs my liquid cooling. But, if u think about the theory. Your car. Its the same type of system. Its cold outside so u have to warm up your to get hot air. Same thing almost. But same concept. I'm not going to bash some one for believing that water cooling is better. My cooler master works great for my system. So I'm ok with that lol. But, water cooling a pi is just stupid and senseless lol. With that u could slap a heatsink on it and a fan in a case and it would work just fine. It works just fine. They are ment to run like that. So they do. But, tools like him just want to give useless info to people lol.

5V, 2.5A. 12.5 watts. Even a 120mm radiator is going to be over 100 thermal watts dissipation @ 10 degrees delta(coolant over ambient). You get VERY little efficiency because the pi can't even heat the coolant properly(and going down to weird tiny alphacool rads is actually more expensive) It's never practical unless you already have a custom loop present. You could stick a pi into a normal computer case(as opposed to the large "dual system" cases) and parallel off to a tiny water block, though it's be better to use a mounting bracket over adhesive. The extra restriction from the tiny block/tubes would reduce flow in the pi section, which is fine as it's not an intel top level 250w barn burner. It's a really niche application. The dual system cases properly are used for productivity. If you have like machine learning or rendering that consumes massive amounts of component space and run for a long time, and a smaller scale system for e-mail, office apps, web browser(corporate internal apps) so the user can still do user speed limited tasks while the main system cranks away at large automated tasks.

I actually watercooled my ODROID XU4, however in this case it was "called for". The thing hit 90+ C instantly when throttled up to 2 GHz at high load. I use it for a media server/file server/TV tuner/DVR server that does on-demand transcoding (PLEX Media Server and TVHeadend) It will still get to 75, but it no longer cuts performance. And it looks cool. ;) If you look at the design of the XU4, there's quite simply no proper way to cool it, the heatsink mounts are off-center the SOC, so you never get even pressure. I used an 80 mm radiator, and a $6 12V fountain pump. (spare me the hate, it'll get "proper" hardware eventually).

How come the water cooled test at 1450 mhz didn't finish? The temps didn't seem too hot up to that level. Explaining Computers did a super large heat sink test on a RP3 and the results are even better than this! (Max temp was 49.9 C). I like it! I know everyone is saying it’s pointless but that’s just an opinion. Nice to know you can do it even though it’s not practical. I did this a while back too with spare parts I had laying around with similar results. I had mine attached to a desk with a two way mirror and rgb lighting and it was awesome. My kids saw something like it in a cartoon so we just made it. Thanks for posting your video!!!

Hi, my name is scott, i am waiting for the raspberry pi 4 to come out before i start my first project. I wanted to know if its possible to build a pi that can play ps4/ xbox1 games. What if i cluster build the pi's? Can i download the game cd's, from the actual disks i get from redbox, then transfer them to a cluster pi 4 box? Please let me know what i would need to do this. Thanks for any info.

I've got my RPi3 overclocked to 1.35GHz. CPU running at ~75% most of the time with occasional spikes to 100%, it's cooled with a copper radiator having a fan sitting on top of it. Runs at 59deg at the moment (haven't been switched off since ~8months). Another unit is outside (in a waterproof box with an acrylic "peek hole" for the camera) and when it's exposed to the sun I had not seen it exceeded 65deg (it's winter now so it's oscilates around 30deg), this one's running 6 months now. These "cooling systems" costed me 5GBP. So if watercooling won't let you go beyond 1.5GHz, then it's pointless in production settings. Unless you want it to be super quiet (and super huge). Otherwise, the video is a great proof of concept :)

That's just crazy dude! Seriously though if someone would make an all in one case/water cooler that would be great because the surface area for heatsink connection is so tiny that having the whole case top as a radiator would be cool. I just got an Asus Tinker board and that thing gets super hot which is why I rewatched this video. Thanks.

Interesting. Now I may have missed this, but you need a fan on that radiator for it to cool properly btw. It's why water cooled vehicles have fans. When you're say at a stop light not moving, the fan moves air through the radiator keeping water cool. Without a fan on the radiator heat is just gonna build up. So you may be able to make it run even cooler.

I am designing a portable water cooled rpi3 for a backpack set up. The prototype works in tandem with a drone that does simple things like follow me, assist in builds(for now it orders parts), hunting wild boar or rabbits. I’m writing a ton of code to get this drone to work on its own but steal processing power from the rpi3 backpack when it needs to do higher level calculations and what not. I want to use a laptop eventually but nothing has the processing power I need to get the bot to compile the code it needs and run at the same time. So simple observe and report until then. It works great for portable pen testing WiFi and basic transmissions from wireless devices. Without physically being there. I hope to show the build by june

This would work perfectly with a raspberry pi 4 B, because it needs a heatsink (and maybe a fan) to be properly cooled. With this watercooling, i think there would be a huge difference in preformance

Do they have splitters to where you could do this to multiple raspberry pi CPUs? If so I could see at that point where this could be more beneficial, the radiator is huge and looks like it could support mulitple. And what was the cost of this build?

Interesting! So based on those benchmarks, watercooling lets you OC to the maximum voltage while not going above the stock cooler's base clock max temps. Worth trying out, I've been messing with my Pi Zero for a while and this seems like a cool project.

In reference to his closing remarks: The capacitor doesn't "control" the voltage. Depending on value, it is acting as a hold up (prevent quick changes in voltage) or a bypass capacitor (provide close proximity source of high frequency current draw). You can't increase or decrease voltage with it, you could only affect if you are seeing sags in voltage from the current draw. Adding a bypass capacitor could help if you are seeing your supply sag more as you increase your operating frequency, a 0.1uf is a typical value for bypass and might help in parallel with whatever is already there (put it as close to the chip you are concerned with to minimize inductive line effects), but you will never increase above what the supply circuit supplies. With how crazy this project is getting you might as well cut the trace and solder in an external supply that provides you with whatever voltage you want.
