Thank you so much for all your info regarding growing orchids in water culture, I've thought of this and watched your videos and now I have a new way of growing a few of my orchids this way and it looks beautiful looking through the glass with various rocks and marbles 😊 Exellent job. Thank you so much for sharing Danielle!! I've been trying to save my Mom's Orchid that ended up with root rot!! List all of it roots, so I soaked the leaves in water til two new roots, and two new leaves grew!! Then the older leaves being soaked in water turned yellow so I removed them!! The new roots stopped growing and they're half inch up above the bottom of the stem so I had the stem in water and it started turning black!! So I took it out, sprayed it with peroxide and letting it dry out for a day!! But I'm happy you explained how you had the stem in and out of water, I will try that!!

Hello Danielle, I'm from Brazil and I want you to know that I love your videos, it's helping me so much. I've started to grow my orchids in water for 2 months now and they seem to be a lot better then before. Specially the Phals. Lots of new roots and new leaf too. I just moved from London to southern France and finally my orchids are alive. I killed all of them in the past, but now I realized it was a matter of weather. Oh and by the way my collection of orchids goes down to my rich neighbors that as soon as the flowers die, they throw the plant away. Crazy, Isn't?

Oh wait!! You have dogs??? Ok we are soulmates! 🤣😆. Sure have learned a lot about rootless orchids! The orchid I received from daughter was mailed in a cardboard container and sat on my front porch w/o my knowledge for who knows how long. I took care in getting the roots unwound and found it to be rootless. (Now I understand so much after your description of the store bought orchids and their condition). I have had it in a wine glass w 1/3 filled w water for about 3 weeks. It is growing a root and a new leaf. I’m very pleased but now I realize I need to let it have more light. It has 2 dehydrates leaves and 1 that is good. Thank you so much for your wonderful instruction!!

Florida, weather right now is 30 to degrees at night and about 50 during the day. Most of my neighbors Orchids are indoors for the winter months and she puts them back outside in the Spring. The neighbor has gifted me an Orchid And I’m so afraid I will kill it, but I am so happy I ran across your channel. Awe!!! The Kitty. I subscribed to the idea that the stringy part of the roots bring moisture. I have an orchid with no roots n I wish I hadn’t listened to someone that suggested I cut them off 😩😩😩 I saw a KZbinr that inverted the leaves into the water. I’m not sure if I should cut off the the tip of the stem but I think I just do more damage.

Blanca Acosta thank you! So sweet! I don't have a humidifier, since I use water culture there is a lot of humidity already in the air. My thermostat also shows the humidity so I keep my eye on that. Last winter I grew most of my collection in my bathroom under a grow light so there was no problem giving them humidity. I'm not doing that this year though so I'm going to keep a sharp eye on my thermostat and adjust if necessary! Thanks for watching!

Hi Danielle. I saw somewhere on KZbin in Singapore that how they replant cattleyas was first cut off most of the old roots and let new ones grow. Perhaps heard on more than one occasion. Anyways is a bold experiment and not for the faint at heart. I must say I’ve tried on a sharry baby as a last resort and have success on my side after struggling with it for more than five months with the old roots dying. So I said, off with your head and gave it a crew cut -and a month later new roots began appearing. But definitely not for phals. Definitely !!! Phals I’ve been using microfiber draped to roots with velman. Especially those with only air roots.
@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas M I did that with my Sharry Baby as well. It was impossible to clean her root system and they were so acidic that they were dropping the water PH into the low 4 range which was not good. So I chopped her roots off and she recovered just fine. Haven't tried it with a Cattleya yet but it's something to consider.

Danielle's Orchid Ranch I think orchids with a strong back up system with bulbs or rhizome with multiple bulbs, such as the oncidiums, dendrobiums and cattleyas might do well if healthy enough. But... I'm still in the learning stage with only a year on orchids. You're east of NYC ? I'm west, which could mean Seattle, but only half hour by auto across the Hudson. In our regent is a little more harsh than in Florida and perhaps needing more tweeking to get these little guys going.

@@daniellesorchidranch1591 I've noticed the benefits from using RO water including the health of my orchids being that I won't be stingy with clean water. I use MSU ( I THUNK it is, Michigan State University) and am able to experiment with cal/mag kelp, and Epson salt. Also because the water has no limit except for the limited output per day, I use it to rinse orchids of salt buildup as well as washing containers and instruments. I'm in northern jersey next to Paterson and keeping my fingers crossed this won't be a snowy season. Oh, don't be expecting to be excited about the taste of RO water. Drinking water needs minerals and think it'll taste better if a bit acidic. Food for thought. Thanks.

Hi Danielle I have a Harliquin phalanopsis. That has no roots. I live in Florida. The humidity is over 50%. I also follow Danny from orchid nature. She does the damp spagnum moss method to encourage root growth. I used it on a orchid that had one fat root. It worked. However I tried it on this orchid I am concerned about and nothing. I feel like it has been longer than three months. It has one long string of a root I took velamin off. I am considering water culture as a last resort. I am getting impatient and desperate. Crown looks good, and stem looks good. Just thinking plant might just be so sick it doesn’t have energy to come back. Do u have any suggestions. I really appreciate it. One thing I'd like to say hopefully before you add any Color dye to the water. I once had two phals pass a purple one and a white one that was colored blue. The purple one put out two pups, the white/blue put out one. And it didn't make it. The purple ones though mad from falling on the floor are both still with me. Am not saying the dye had anything to do with it but I can't say it didn't ether.

Hi Danielle, really love 💗 your videos. I have an orchid that has 1 leaf and a tip of a leaf merging out, as well as several keikis on both of her stems. One of the keikis is growing a new leaf and the keiki is possibly getting bigger. She has an air root that I try to keep hydrated with a paper towel and some stranglers with no velamin in full culture water that I am desperately trying to save. First how long do you soak the tip of the stem for, would you recommend that for my orchid and do you also recommend I cut the keiki off at the stem or cut the stem which has 3 other small keikis attached to it? Or just leave it alone for now. If you’d like I can try and send you a pic of my phal. Please help me save my baby! I have been growing orchids in bark for about 4 years and all of a sudden they all started going downhill until I started watching your videos. I have 1 phal that so far is in great shape that has been in bloom every year. But the one Phal I am asking for help with is bye far the worst. She came to me from my doctors office and had such beautiful blooms on her. So I am desperately trying to save her as well as her babies. I apologize I did not mean to draft a book. Thank you! Mya Taylor some Phalaenopsis just are keiki makers. I have one perfectly healthy Phalaenopsis that likes to grow Keiki's on her flower spikes. However sometimes the mother plant will put out Keiki's because it is dying. One of my Phalaenopsis did this. If the mother plant only has one leaf and all her roots are dead this may be the case. Once the Keiki's have roots a few inches long you can remove them from the mother plant. Keiki's will drain the mother plant so if she is not dying but is struggling to stay alive the Keiki's will keep draining her nutrients so I recommend removing them when the roots are long enough. If the mother plant was in great shape this would not be necessary right away but it sounds as if she is not doing very good. I hope that works for you. If you are going to soak the stem you can soak it for 20 minutes to a half hour, basically until the stem is saturated and then remove from the water.
@myataylor4807
@myataylor4807 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for responding! The one thing that concerns me is that there are other smaller keikis on the same stem that I am trying to save as well. And one of the smaller baby keikis is underneath the actual keiki that’s still growing slowly, but not rooted yet. So if I wait until the main keiki has rooted, should I cut the stem to try to save all the keikis, or should I just cut off the main keiki that’s rooted. Boy I wrote allot and I hope that made sense.☺️ And like you, I don’t give up. Can I send you a pic? Anyway love watching and happy holidays! Thank you, Mya
@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 6 жыл бұрын
Mya Taylor you'd really have to evaluate what's needed. Keiki's won't survive without roots, if you remove them before they have roots they will most likely die. It seems one of them does have roots though so at least you have one with a good chance at survival.

Hello! How often do orchids bloom??
@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what type of orchid, some can bloom more then once a year, some only once a year. Some blooms can last months and others only weeks or even days. But the most common orchids which are Phalaenopsis orchids typically bloom once a year and the blooms can last for over 3 months. There are exceptions to that as well but typically that’s the case.

I would think that if the orchid is alive and growing that it is getting nutrients.

Susan Brown me too but there those that doubt. They say it's surviving off the energy and nutrients stored in the leaves. 🤷‍♀️ either way I'm glad they survive

Hi Danielle, I converted all my 18 orchids from semi-hydroponic to water culture a week ago, and luckily 16 of them seem to be handling the change fine. However, I prepared the water (distilled) to be about 6 ph (using ph Down), yet when I measure the water in the containers today, all went up to about 7 to 7.4. I couldn't figure out what's happening. I put some pebbles in the containers to raise some of the roots, could that be the reason? Actually I measured the water ph with pebbles to be just between 6 to 6.3. So I am really puzzled. Any advice? Thanks.

ann wang I think you may be right about the pebbles. There may have been something on them that raised the PH. It's the only thing I can quess that would be the cause.

@@daniellesorchidranch1591 Thanks Danielle. Should I just add more ph Down to balance out the pebble effect?
@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 6 жыл бұрын
ann wang that is an option or you could try boiling the pebbles in water to remove whatever may be lingering on them. I use glass pebbles so they can be easily cleaned and other then algae not much can grow on them.

Thanks for replying. Last evening I took all my pebbles out of the containers, wash the containers, and added newly prepared distilled water at ph 5.8. I measured this morning, and all my water went up to 6.25-6.4! I used General Hydrophonics PH Down which is supposed to be stable. You mentioned in one of your videos that your water ph actually would go down as time passes and water evaporates. I am beating my brains out to figure why my water ph goes up for no reason. Are my orchids missing on major nutrients such as calcium if my water ph does not get down to 5.8?

ann wang I have to say the PH going up is not usually the problem people have. If you leave the water for a few days does it continue to go up or does it eventually start dropping back down? I usually start with a PH of 6.1-6.2 for my orchids and the PH drops significantly by the time I change the water, which I do once a week. Maybe check the PH again in a few days.

I live in Corpus Christi TX and it is very humid here. I have a dehumidifier in my studio. Can I use the water from the dehumidifier for my orchid?
@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 3 жыл бұрын
My only concern with that water would be possible fungal or bacterial spores from the humid environment. Humidity outside usually is accompanied by good air flow. In a humid room in the house there is typically no air flow and that can lead to bacteria/mold etc. if it’s a large room with good airflow then it could be ok. Ultimately it is up to you if you feel comfortable using it.
