Mines is in a black flower pot with holes on the bottom living in Orchid Moss it looks like it’s dying what should I do? I just got it for Christmas 😟😢

I just bought an orchid that was sitting in water inside of a pot with no drainage holes. The plastic pot liner that the roots are in is so tight I can’t pull the root system out. I think I’m going to have to cut the thing off. I got a ceramic pot with holes in the sides and orchid bark medium. I’m going to attempt to repot it. This video was very helpful. Thanks.

Thank you for your excellent video. My Phil orchid has many roots now. The old stem is very black, but I think it may be trying to put out some new roots too. It was also able to grow 2 new leaves a few months ago. Is it possible it can not do both at the same time? The larger older leaves have firmed up again. There is also a slight tear in the new leaf. Do you recommend cinnamon as a bacterial defense. I don’t know if it will bloom. It is 11 years old, I really want to save it. Any other advice? Thank you again. Have a Merry Christmas. 😊❤

I have a phal that I've been rehabbing in water for about a year now. It lost most of its roots from root rot that it had when I got it. It has about 5 healthy roots now but only one of the roots is pretty long while the others are shorter still. I found one of your videos several months ago and started to only give it distilled water for 24 hours and then dump the water out and repeat that each week. I don't know if I need to be more patient or if it needs fertilizer? At what point do you fertilize orchids you have been rehabbing?

I was given an orchid with small very pretty flowers about 6 years ago, and since then it never flowered for 5 years, then just before we moved house it decided to bloom again. I packed it very carefully in a large box to protect it during the move, and it survived - so successfully that it has been in constant bloom for over a year now, so never despair, orchids frequently surprise me!

I was so encouraged when you said one had not bloomed in 8 years. I have had many for over 4 years without a bloom and I was worried that I did something wrong. This year I finally have 7 plants out of 27 that have flower spikes. Nothing on oncidiums.

@daniellesorchidranch159124 күн бұрын
If you wait until all the buds are open, the blooms are usually “set“ and you should be fine to repot it. Either way if it is a steady bloomer, you repotting it shouldn’t be an issue, as long as you are gentle when you repot it.

@daniellesorchidranch159124 күн бұрын
I would do research on the type of Dendrobium it is. If it is a deciduous Dendrobium, then it losing its leaves can be quite normal. Even non-deciduous orchids will occasionally lose some of their leaves. I recommend looking up your Dendrobium and finding out more about its growing conditions, and growth patterns.

I pulled it out and sprayed plant with peroxide and water..I let it dry for a day..now Am trying semi water culture...I placed in clear vase like you use and added inch of water. I dropped a couple roots in for a couple hours and removed them..plan to drop in roots for a couple hours 2 times a week...any suggestions?

people make too big a deal out of fertilizer, it boils down to what you can afford and what you find works for you. So long as it has N-P-K-Ca-Mg, it will work itself out. MSU is fine, although newer research has shown that an NPK ratio of 3-1-2 is best for many different plants, including orchids (MSU being 3-1-5 ratio). It is also being shown that nitrate nitrogen alone is not the best metabolically and plants benefit from ammoniacal nitrogen as well. I'm currently testing the Dynagro Foliage Pro, which is a 9-3-6 formula with 3:1 nitrate nitrogen to ammoniacal nitrogen. I cannot say I have noticed anything yet on the orchids, but on my aroids (which grow a hell of a lot faster) there is a difference in growth speed, leaf size and flower production. For the orchids, I will probably alternate between the jack's 2 part and the Dynagro when spring arrives, simply because the Dynagro is rather expensive by comparison because it is a liquid. But I have also used the Better-Gro orchid plus and they did just fine. My main issue with it was that it didn't dissolve completely (so something was being left behind) and it would absorb water from the air and turn to mush rather quickly.
@daniellesorchidranch1591Ай бұрын
@@michaelmccarthy4077 thank you so much for bringing this insight! I do agree that people are more concerned about fertilizer than they need to be. I’d say about 75% of comments have to do with the fertilizer! And it’s so true, what works for you, is the right fertilizer! I also use Jack’s B part fertilizer along with my MSU. I used Better-Gro when I first started growing orchids but after doing research I switched to my current fertilizers and I did notice an improvement. Realizing that my environment was unique to me and that I had to take that into consideration, not just blindly following what other growers on YT were using (who all had very different set ups) was a key moment for me. Learning what others are finding good results with is still very interesting to me and I put a lot of thought into whether it would benefit my plants as well. That is one of the things I enjoy about this hobby. Trying new things and constantly learning! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your valuable knowledge! Once my MSU runs out, I had been considering trying a new primary fertilizer, so you’ve given me some ideas ☺️💙

@daniellesorchidranch1591Ай бұрын
Yes, thank you, that is what I meant. I don’t write out what I’m going to say and sometimes the proper term escapes me. pH higher than 7 is Basic. 7 is Neutral. That’s actually also why I emphasize research! Sometimes I say something incorrectly or that wouldn’t apply to your growing environment. So being educated about this subject allows you to realize what I mean when I use the wrong term or when something doesn’t apply to you. Thank you for watching 😊

This is such a good video. A lot of orchid videos tell you what you have to do but don’t tell you why. Danielle explains the reasons behind everything i.e. if you need to grow a better root system the plant can’t have access to water constantly as then it wouldn’t have to put out new roots to look for water. Might be common sense to some people but I’m a complete novice and therefore appreciate the clear explanations please keep these videos coming !!

HEEEELP Im overwhelmed 😞 i bought 3 phals and i dont know what going on and i have watched sooooooo many, days or weeks, at this point, worth of time. 1 phal: i have it about 5 months now and all this time it bloomed, now the flowers one by one are falling, thats normal okey, it has 3 spikes, i cut 2 down to the base cause all the flowers were gone but one spike continues to bloom. I noticed thag the leaves begin to drop, i looked from outside and the roots seemed okey, i repotted it when i bought it because it is a very large one with so many roots. I didnt give it water because the roots werent silver and also one leave had on one side a Wave and in all the videos i watched, it said it was because of overwatering but i only water when the roots are silver, till i noticed thag my new one had it also and found out thag this wave wasnt created by overwatering but because when it was wrapped up, the stem was in the middle and beeing for some time wrapped up it created this ttype of wave but what im worried are the dropping leaves??? 2 phal: i bought it a month and a half ago and repottet it cause i only did see at home that it wasnt doing well with the roots but i let the flower on. In this short time i noticed more and more roots dying of, so i took her out another time and cut away the dead roots and also the flowerspikes so she could concentrate on the vegetive growth but instead the leaves are hanging much more as my first described phal, i found other roots that are rooting but within this little time i did repot 2 times, so now what? What should i do next, i see those roots that arent good and i think its because of that that the leaves hang because she has no opportunity to hydrate herself. 3 mini phal: bought about 2 months ago, she had 3 flowers, 2 wilthered of and the buds that were on also fall but it created other buds so im giving it a cool down but i noticed that she is trying to grow new roots, i see green roottips coming from the stem. What should i do now? Cut the flowerspike away allthough it has created new buds and let her grow vegetavly or let the flowerspikes on with the bhds and continue with the cool down? I know its a lot im asking but i really dont know what to do at this point. Please somebody help, i really appreciate it, thank you so much ❤

Yours is the most comprehensive and compact instruction video I've watched. 4 months ago my 2 stalk orchid had at least 6 blooms each. As I had been told, I gave it 3 ice cubes weekly. 🙃 Now the blooms are gone; the 12" stalks are brown about halfway down but the leaves are firm and perky. So, do I treat it as a sick girl and un-pot, removing dead roots and leaf remnants? Also, with newly purchased plant that appear healthy, do you inspect their root system immediately? Thank you in advance for addressing my questions and for your really helpful video.

Even though I am the “plant master” according to my friends and family, Phal orchids have put my ego where it belongs. I killed more of those boogers than I care to admit before finally getting them to thrive. The key, as with all plants, is to mimic their natural environment as much as possible. My number one tip for all my peeps is to research every new plant. You might be surprised at how different their temperature ranges, lighting and water needs are compared to what we might imagine.
