Subscribed and found a treasure trove of videos! My mother learnt to gild off a master like you but I didnt sit and learn from her. Now trying learn but my teacher is more for furniture - my first frame was is not for close inspection! - so your lessons are a godsend. Excited to try your compo as making gesso/stucco pieces is slow and a bit hit and miss and epoxy is a poor surface for gesso and bole. Also looking forward to cleaning with Vulpex. I am working on a frame with a free standing bow on top with the ends flowing to the sides. Do you have suggestions for buying a mold or a ready made piece? Again many thanks

I use the silicon that dentists use for moulding large fillings. It is cheaper than your silicon putty. Two versions so far: one is rolling two equal amounts together but it sets very fast and less flexible than yours. The other is a putty plus a smaller amount of paste which allows you to extend the moulding time and have something more flexible but i done know if it is as flexible as yours. Love your videos. thank you for sharing so much of the techniques and your own secrets

@@simonnoble6243 you have to be careful with some dental silicone they can shrink. So if you want to keep the mould it's not great. I had a lovely silicone putty by Tiranti, but they stopped making it. Its was as you described you could mix more or less from the tube to make it go longer or shorter

If you buy art from the 1800:s & it has a water guilded frame, it is always good art & expensive. (Sweden.) You can start by looking at the frame, then by all means, also check out the painting.... That kind of art has always been over my budget, but i did come across one such painting, in the Antique shop down at the corner where i lived, which i purchased... It was a small sturm & drang landscape, in the classic 7-layer technique, i.e. thin layers and that glorious sky rendering... probably older than 1850... A typical water-guilded-frame painting... Not that water guilding was especially expensive, but the people moving in from the countryside, they were perfectly happy with the classical, cottage/road/forest (optional lake & moose), in a gold painted frame.

Thank you very much Ruth for freely sharing so much of your knowledge on framing and gilding. Through watching your detailed videos over the past few years, you've helped me build my own gilded frames from scratch for my paintings. Before I had discovered your channel, building anything more ornate than a very basic float frame seemed completely out of reach. I've substituted some of the materials used for convenience sake (such as using paper clay instead of compo for the ornamentation), but the underlying process of creating a frame remains exactly the same as you've demonstrated. Thank you once again.
