If you ever wondered why the price of HS2 ballooned to such an extreme degree, this is a prime example; all of this could (and really should) have been a straightforward cutting with an over bridge. It would have been tens, if not hundreds of millions of pounds cheaper to compulsory purchase the surrounding homes (market value + 25%), excavate the cutting, build the over bridge, and then sell the homes back into the market with HS2 in place. The fact that so much taxpayers money has been used to appease a tiny handful of affluent homeowners concerned about noise is fucking absurd. It's stuff like this, along with all of the other wasteful practices which has directly resulted in the northern leg being cancelled.

Nice video. However unnecessary engineering like this us why hs2 is so over budget and costing us all. Why not simply relay the railway in the existing cutting and be done with it? If noise is an issue, put those acoustic fences you get next to motorways along the tops of the cutting. Tens of millions saved!
