To moderate the temperature issue you may want to plant trees. Forests can dampen the temperature (that includes the hot AND the cold) up to 5°C (9°F). A forest can also be a food forest, permaculture-style, which will (if established) provide food and requires with less labor than monocultures, mainly "management-tasks". If that is what you want - even if it is just a part of your land useage, you should start with water that you catch, hold, spread over your land in channels, and sink into the ground. Also you may want ponts in this system. In those ponts you shouldn't use liner, so the water can slowly seep into the ground around it. But you want to control the seepage. You tried it with pigs (stomping, compacting, even a bit manure...). But you need to do it over a longer time (maybe fencing in the pont and letting the pigs live there for a year or two) or you may want to use Ducks or Goose. Those will be drawn even to the littelest bodies of water, like a puddle, at the bottom of the pond for swimming and playing. I just love your videos especially the water ones. All the self-sufficiency. It's like building wealth in land, plants, earthwork, buildings, and animals. You seem to manage to live more and more comfortably and luxurious from day to day.

Keep up the good work John. I never miss an upload. My work situation has been changing and I have been planning to make the jump to off grid. Like you, I have wanted an off grid property since I was very young. Your channel more than any other has really inspired me to make the change, so thank you.

@@FrugalOffGrid Kinda sounds like here 😉 Elm trees really go wild here so when I find a seedling I pot it up for one year then plant out. Quaker aspens do good also. Haven’t tried locust yet. 18 yrs ago there were 2 trees on 1.5 acres…. Now I have about 100 tall trees. And more to plant this year 😊. A little at a time right ? Keep up the great work 💪💪👵🏻👩‍🌾❣️

Really enjoying your channel. Water is definitely a priority. You have built some great systems. Love that water tower. My 500 gallon cistern system has always froze at some point in winter so I have kept a 55 gallon food grade barrel in the cabin and three more in a storage area for backup. We're getting down to the teens and possible single digits this weekend so we'll see if the new system stays up and running. Take care.

We used to put bleach in our big job site water cooler. Just keep out the funk, not much, just a drop every couple of refills.

You should look into the Earth's ship systems also biodigesters
@michaelsasylum
@michaelsasylum 9 ай бұрын
Biodigesters require a large amount of manure and you have to process it into the sludge yourself and it has to be kept above a certain temperature for methane production. It's definitely an interesting component to the off grid lifestyle. Earthship is something I'm very interested in myself, seeing a lot of tight designs that accomodate living, greenhouse, and water storage spaces together.

If you ever want to take a trip to Louisiana, i invite you to stay on family property so i can pick your brain on how to turn this property into a self sufficient food forest and "landscape" it with food producing plants. I admire your work ethic (you remind me of my dad who is from the last generation of hard working folks who don't believe in handouts, but instead, believe in hard work and helping one another in small communities. I want that but dont have the physical strength that i once had. Anyway, contact me if you're up for a trip to "The Big Easy". I'll show you around and give you fhu on our property.

Used to know a army medic, he trained how to clean water and part of it was using bleach. I dont remember what ratio but it was a very small amount of bleach.

You might already have a video on this and missed it. If you dug a hole under your water troughs 4-5 feet put in a covert pipe or pipes coming up would this heat the water from the ground and prevent your water containers from freezing in the winter?
