This is the best explanation for water-jug problem available. Everyone else just read out the rules, nobody explained the most confusing rule #6 and #7.

In the 6th rule we assume the X amount is present in the 4 litre capacity jug way deduct 4 - X amount from the three litre capacity jug to fill the 4 litre jug the three litre jug current capacity is not known so taken as Y .so final Amount deducted from the three litre jug is Y-(4-x).and now the 4 liter jug is full. Y-(4-x)>=0 Hear amount can be left in the 3 litre capacity jug or it can be empty so greater than or equal to zero.
