I would say there are some more 1. Old Fashioned or sling= spirit, sugar, water, bitters 2. Daiquri or sour= spirit, sugar, citrus 3. Daisy= sprit, sugar from liqueur, citrus 4. Vermouth or bitter=spirit, sugar and bitter from vermouth, bitters 5. Collins =spirit, sugar, citrus, soda water 6. Royale= spirit, sugar, citrus, sparkling wine 7. Flip= spirit, sugar, bitter, egg, for nog milk 8. Dessert= liqueur, cream 9. Smash= spirit, sugar, citrus, herbs 10. Fix= spirit, sugar, citrus, crushed ice There are absolutely 6 core cocktails but when you really get into the game you find sub categories. Almost like being a fan of metal music haha

The metal music sub genre analogy is absolutely perfect! What do you think about this idea? I actually think that if you go beyond the "six core recipes" you probably don't need to think about base recipes all that much anymore. What I mean is that it's basically just a tool for absolute beginners or people who are just disoriented by the sheer variety of cocktails. Not to say that thinking in subgenres is in and of itself a bad thing or unhelpful. But I think it's less useful to the absolute beginner and I think that the idea of core recipes is most useful as a concept to absolute beginners. Curious to know what you think and thank you for sharing such a well thought out comment!

Nice cocktail and good editing and presentation. If you work on lighting and sound you’d have really great production value. You are talented. Keep it up

To me it’s more like a cosmos . Aviation definitely has a different taste due to the maraschino, lack of orange, and higher gin content which , IMO is more herbal tasting all together.

I'd be wary of taking the 'six fundamental cocktails theory' so literally. It has nothing to do with history. Saying that a cocktail is a riff or variation of another cocktail, implies that one was directly inspired by the other. This is definitely sometimes the case, but often it is not. For example, the whiskey sour was not directly inspired by the daiquiri, as they both evolved separately. It's still a really useful tool because a lot of cocktails are built in similar ways and therefore work for the same reasons. It's all about understanding the balance of cocktails and not the history. Cocktail Codex acknowledges this too. We have no idea what inspired the Aviation for example, but it's unlikely that it was consciously thought up as variation on a sidecar. Cocktails can just be invented on their own without being a riff of something else. That being said, if i had to guess, I would say that the Water Lily is actually a Last Word riff. It's very similar to an aviation on terms of the ingredients but the balance is pretty different. The Corpse Reviver #2 and the Last Word are both equal part cocktails with a base spirit, liqueur and lemon juice. However the Corpse Reviver #2 has a vermouth instead of a liqueur as the final part. Also it has a dash of absinthe. I think this cocktail is screaming 'Last Word riff'... Gin/gin: same base spirit Lemon/lemon: same acid Maraschino Liqueur/orange liqueur: both clear and fairly dry fruit liqueurs Crème de violette/Chartreuse: both intense and fairly sweet botanical liqueurs ...exact same specs... Btw i love your videos so don't take this as a critique :))

I love the thought you put into this comment and I wish I had done a better job delineating the difference between historical origin and category clarification, a la cocktail codex. I basically implied the whisky sour was derived from the daiquiri and, as you pointed out, that isn't true in the slightest. I appreciate legitimate criticism, especially when it's delivered respectfully! I want to get better and make better content so, please share your thoughts! I have a lot of plans for this channel (I even have a book idea) and this year I'll be focusing on refining my content preproduction, streamlining my filming process and ultimately building a regular video release schedule. I hope I've earned a subscription from you, as you are the kind of viewer I want to cater towards: thoughtful, knowledgeable and above all people who like my personality. I hope to see more of you in the comments section going forward - cheers! 🥂🥂🥂
