Great video and explanations! I will be replacing the water pump on my 2003 Venture on saturday. (warm and sunny day in Toronto, eh? LOL). I agree with the "No use of any gasket sealer", unless the surfaces are rough/scrapes/uneven. I lear years ago, that if we want to add anything to the gasket surface, a little engine oil will do, it soaks the gasket and makes it impermeable to liquids like water and antifreeze, but it's not necessary. Gaskets material are made just for that reason, to gasket and prevent any of the present liquids from leaking through. For any of you inexperienced mechanical inclined/mechanic fee$ avoider$, I suggest you watch this video on a "step by step" basis, as you approach the task at end. Pay close attention when installing the new pump, as to tighten the bolts gently and opposite to each other. 4 bolts, so, like, number them in a clockwise matter, 1,2,3,4. If you gently tighten bolt #1, then, gently tighten bolt #3, then bolt #2 and bolt #4. Opposite to each other, so the pump with sit evenly throughout. My new pump manufacturer, suggests flushing the cooling system before replacing the pump. Sounds like a good idea, however, it could be an extra expense some of us don't need. Don't forget after pump replacement is done, to mix the coolant 50/50 coolant/water, or more coolant and less water, depending on location temperatures. Colder weather requires more coolant percentage. Check for heat/fan operation inside vehicle afterwards. Good luck to all. BTW; I can't believe what has to be done to replace the spark plugs. :/ Anyone knows an easy way?

+Game Buddy Game Buddy, thanks for all the great advice on the water pump installation. I agree with you guys, the proper terminology I should have used was gasket adhesive, rather than gasket sealer. Still, if you are able to attach it without the use of any liquids or adhesives, that will be even better. Thanks again for your suggestions and for watching our video. One thing everyone should do (most likely mentioned in the instructions) is flush out the old coolant while the old pump is still in place. This will keep from introducing old sediment into the new pump that may have been causing wear to the old pump.
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 8 жыл бұрын
+markfothebeast Hi markofthebeast, yes that can be another procedure to do, especially if the coolant has not been changed in a long time. It will require a few extra steps to flush the coolant out of the system, and then after the water pump is replaced, add new coolant mix to the system. Thanks for sharing your advice!
@wilkesjournal
@wilkesjournal 9 жыл бұрын
When bleeding the cooling system on these and other vehicles equipped with rear heat, don't forget that the rear heat should be turned on while the vehicle is running, to bleed that part of the system as well. It doesn't hurt to park the van on a slight incline, with the front end facing up hill while bleeding the system. These have a strange cooling system in that the coolant temp sensor is located so high on the engine, that with a low coolant level, the engine can be overheating, but the gauge shows normal because the overheated coolant is not touching the sensor. It makes diagnosis a little more interesting, and because of it, it's no wonder so many of these have blown head gaskets.

Hi Terri Bradley, The reply button on KZbin is not working, but I think we can help you out. Are you referring to the small bleeder on the coolant line? You can see it in more detail at 13:23 on the video. If the bleeder nut is leaking it might not be completely closed. Or it may be broken. They are very fragile, so take extra caution when tightening the nut for the bleeder, or it can break very easily. Hope that helps.
@DDEENY
@DDEENY 9 жыл бұрын
Rather than a razor blade scraper, I'd recommend a miniature paint scraper (not a "glass scraper") to scrape the old gasket off. You scrape on the pull stroke and there's less risk of gouging the gasket mounting surface. Those little paint scrapers fit into your hand and have a hooked edge. You can find one at www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=54. Alternatively, you could use a piece of scrap steel pallet banding that you can bend to form a small handle to fit in your hand and form a hook on the cutting end and file sharp with a fine mill file/diamond file and apply thumb pressure as you pull the edge over the surface.
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 9 жыл бұрын
+DDEENY This is not a bad idea. We've found the small razor blade scrapers work great for us, but everyone has their preference. Whenever using a steel blade or scraper, be careful not to gouge into the aluminum housing. A lighter touch is all that's needed to effectively remove the old gasket material. Thanks for sharing your tip DDEENY!

Hi El Daddio, thanks for your comments. This video was shot in real time, with the total amount taking about 45 minutes to replace the water pump. We've edited some of the bolt removal or reattachment times, for viewer convenience, but replacing the water pump on this engine is a project most home mechanics can complete. Follow the steps on our video, and you should be OK. Make sure you bleed the air from the radiator lines - to prevent air pockets and overheating, like on the video, after you install your new water pump. A water pump can usually be found for $50 (more for OEM fully warranted parts), so this replacement makes a lot of sense. Our vehicle in this video ran for years after this pump was replaces without any issues. Thanks for watching - good luck on your repair and vehicle.

BAD NEWS TO SHARE: One of the 5 bolts that hold in my pump sheered off. To properly fix this I would have to take of the ENTIRE timing cover to drill and tap out the bolt piece. I should have known better and let the MOVEIT soak in for a bit. As my brother said, "You're one bolt away from a bad day" I am going to try some red gasket sealer first before going the long way. Maybe pin this at the top @vintageVideos?
@VintageVideos2009

Hi Matteus, that is bad news, and turns a one-hour job into a major headache. So, were you able to get the other bolts out and remove the pump? If so, is there any portion of the bolt sticking out beyond the timing cover? If so, perhaps you would want to look on our channel for a short video, about how we removed a broken head bolt very easily. I realize you have little space, but maybe it will provide some ideas for you to consider? Good luck on the broken bolt removal.

@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, that is a good observation. On this minivan, the battery removal would require removing the brace, the fuse box and a related shroud. As you pointed out, removing these components will provide from for working space, however we felt there is adequate room to complete the repair without the removal. If the mechanic has large forearms and hands, then it would make a lot of sense to remove the battery for more room. Thanks for the observation and suggestion to future viewers help make this process a little easier.

I don't understand the purpose of the gasket sealer if you have a perfectly good gasket?
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 7 жыл бұрын
Hi John, good question. We feel that the gasket sealer may allow for slight imperfections of the gasket and the mating surfaces. The sealer also applies a little bit of adhesion, so you can place the gasket properly and it will not slide or rotate out of place when installing the new pump. Also, if there is a slight imperfection in the thickness of the gasket itself, the sealer should allow for a tight continuous seal. Thanks for the great question. We hope this video helped and we invite you to subscribe for more new "how-to" videos in the future.

+ShatteredHawk Hi ShatteredHawk, thanks for your comments. This job is a bit more difficult than, lets say changing oil and filter. The most challenging aspect is removing the stubborn pulley bolts. We feel our video shows a nice way to do that. The water pump is in a tight location and you'll need some skill at accessing some hard-to-reach items, but you should be able to handle it. If you've changed a serpentine belt before, you can probably handle changing your water pump. Watch our video again, and see that you have the right tools. If you are not able to remove the pulley bolts yourself, maybe a friend can help hold the screwdriver in place so you can loosen and then re-tighten the pulley bolts. As a first-timer, you should be able to complete this job in about 60-90 minutes. Good luck and we invite you to like, share and subscribe to our channel.

squeezing top hose does nothing!!!!! Fill radiator, replace cap, start engine, as it warms up, loosen one bleeder, then close, open other, then close. as system builds pressure, open bleeders will expel air bubbles. close bleeders when only fluid comes out.
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Cat Dakman, actually, the hose is squeezed to help expel bulk air that is trapped within the line, much like you would burp a rubber hose for other situations. If you try it, you can feel the air being expelled at the bleeders by squeezing the hose. However, you are right in making sure to run the vehicle, open the bleeders carefully (they break easily) and following the proper order, to remove any trapped air within the system. Thanks for watching and sharing your comments.

So when you're pressing on the hose towards the end to bleend it, how do you know when to stop? Until liquid stops coming out, or when you dont hear anymore air?
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 6 жыл бұрын
Hi God.is.love, thanks for the question. So, yes, when you press on the hose you are trying to squeeze the air out of the system. Thus, you continue to squeeze until air no longer comes out, and only coolant squeezes out of the bleeder screw hole. It's both the visual - seeing the liquid come out, and the sound - no longer hearing the sound of air coming out. Hope this helps, and we invite you to subscribe to our channel for more DIY videos.

That new pump looks different from the OEM pump. What’s the difference
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose Duran Jr, thanks for watching and sharing your question. So, for starters - both pumps function the same, that is create vacuum/pressure to move coolant through the system. Visually, you'll notice the OEM pump has a more solid, cast iron impeller - whereas the less expensive replacement model has a stamped metal impeller. In the video, the minivan was already more than 10 years old, so finding an identical match is somewhat unlikely, when purchasing a new part. It really comes down to availability of the part, pricing, warranty and how long you plan to keep your vehicle. Generally speaking, better quality parts with a longer warranty can cost double or triple the price of a cheaper, refurbished part. Great question!

Hi, thanks for watching and sharing your question. The crowbar we used was about 20" in length - a very common size. @VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 5 жыл бұрын
Hi chiefkokey, have you checked your thermostat? Overheating and related messages with elevated temperatures could be an indication that your thermostat is not operating properly. Generally speaking, with a defective water pump, you will begin to see coolant, below the car, or within the engine compartment - or at least notice the coolant smell when you raise the hood. And the thermostat is often cheaper, and in some cases, much easier to change than a water pump. I would give that a look, before replacing the water pump. Also though, if your water pump is not performing correctly, you would in fact see some overheating messages on the dash, so it cannot be ruled out completely. Thanks for the excellent question! Good luck on the repair. Let us know what you discovered and how you took care of it -kinda curious to see what it is?

Would you recommend this service if the coolant was spilling out of the reservoir and it was over heating
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Austin, thanks for watching and sharing your question. If water is spilling out of your reservoir, you may want to look at a few things. First, you can watch this video and near the end, it explains how to bleed your coolant for this 3.4L engine. It is possible that you have a trapped air pocket in the system, which is leading to overheating. By bleeding the system, you may be able to eliminate the air pocket. If your water pump has failed, normally you can detect a leak of some kind near the water pump, or it might make a whining or screeching noise, as the bearings fail. If the water pump has failed, then yes, you definitely need to replace the water pump. One other item to look at, and it's relatively inexpensive, it the thermostat. The thermostat can stick in the closed position, and cause overheating as well. I don't have a video on replacing a thermostat, but I'm sure there is one if you search KZbin. Hope this helps and good luck with your vehicle.

@@austinbranscomb8392 Yes, burping it could do the trick. If it still overheats after all the air is expelled, you might check your thermostat ($10 item usually) and replace it, or it could be a faulty water pump, that may be somewhat erratic. Good luck sir!

do u have to change the thermostat?
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 6 жыл бұрын
While the thermostat is a part of the cooling system, which also includes the water pump, it is not necessary to replace the thermostat in conjunction with a water pump replacement. As long as the thermostat continues to work correctly, once the new water pump is replaced, your vehicle should operate correctly. If you notice problems with overheating or under heating, it could mean that your thermostat is the problem, rather than a faulty water pump. Generally speaking, a thermostat is less expensive and much easier to replace than a water pump on most vehicles. Thanks again for the great question. We invite you to subscribe to our channel.

Hi benjaminpizza vargas, thanks for the question. The general procedure in disassembly and replacement is similar, however there will be some differences in the coolant hoses and connections. +scott hamrick Hi Scott, this did happen when we performed the bleeding on a 1997 Chevy Venture as well. You can carefully - I repeat, CAREFULLY, loosen the entire bleeder plug, to vent the air. Make sure the plug does not fall inside the engine compartment. Also, make sure the coolant is not excessively hot if you choose to remove the bleeder plug, to avoid any burns or injuries. You can also visit a dealer or obtain a new bleeder plug, if you can hold off on bleeding the coolant for a few days. Hope these ideas help. Good luck on the repair! @VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 8 жыл бұрын
+scott hamrick Is it possible that you have slightly overfilled the amount of coolant, thus the reservoir is discharging the overflow amount? This would not be unusual. If however, that is not the case, you could possibly have a hole in your coolant reservoir and may need to remove it and replace with a new reservoir. Also, check that all the cap is properly and completely closed tight on the reservoir, and other coolant caps as well.

If the 2002 Monte Carlo LS has the 3.4 liter engine, it may be very similar. There could be some components that are placed differently in the engine compartment, so I can't say for sure. What happens if you install the pump in the wrong orientation?
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 7 жыл бұрын
Hi MrLambris, thanks for the question. Do you mean if you install it backward, so that the pulley is on the inside? Or do you mean installing it rotated partially turned around the housing? If with the pulley inside, the pump would not be functional, because it would not be driven by the belt. We're not even sure it would fit within the housing correctly like that either. If you mean, did you fail to line up the tabs and over-rotate the pump on the housing, it would mean one or more bolt holes would not line up, so you would not be able to tighten the pump completely. It would likely cause a leak around the pump, where the pump was not bolted in it's normal pattern. Either way, you would be looking at a leaking pump and need to correct it soon after. Thanks for sharing your question and for watching our video.
@MrLambris
@MrLambris 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah i meant the second one with the tabs not lining up. oddly enough the one I installed was not machined the same as the old one. was the right part though. it had only one tab instead of the three and no arrow that i could see. i lined it up with he larger tab that was present in both models. all bolt holes lines up and went in smoothly. there was a squeaking noise after installation though so i wasnt sure if maybe i overlooked something. everything was flush and all holes lined up so i assumed it was good. may have been the belt as it managed to get kinda dirty during the process, i didnt replace and i know they can get noisy with coolant on them. water on belt seemed to help the noise. housing of the water pump was leaking on old one(spraying all over engine compartment with distinct wobble on pulley). replacement stopped that but it was still leaking from somewhere under the front center of the engine. is my friends car. i told him we should look into that leak and he brushed it off. fast forward 2 days hes on side of highway and car wont hold any coolant, just shoots right out the bottom as you pour it in. managed to putts it home but drove 5 miles dry; i also told him this was a bad idea. as he pulled into driveway a pop/thud noise was made and some residual fluid started to leak. god only knows whats wrong with it now havent had a chance to look as ive been busy but part of me kinda feels guilty since i was the last person to do work on it. thanks for your time and your video. i subbed
@VintageVideos2009
@VintageVideos2009 7 жыл бұрын
I get the sense that even though the replacement pump was not an identical match, it sounds like you installed the new one just fine. And the noise at start up could merely be the belt tightening up once again on the serpentine pulley system. As for the significant leak below, and to that volume, I wonder if a large radiator hose came loose, or a something of that significance? And you are right, driving it dry is not advisable. I mean if the weather is cold, here in Wisconsin in winter, you can do that, but once the vehicle heats up, you're risking a very, very expensive blown head gasket issue. Thanks for the sub, and let's hope you can locate the problem, get it fixed and the vehicle will be OK.

+widtrak77 Well, that's a valid question. A couple of things though. First, the battery includes an extra bracket to remove, and is somewhat of a pain to remove, compared to most batteries that are very accessible. And second, the battery removal will offer very marginal improvement in getting at the water pump parts and related items. A person certainly could remove the battery, but it would add more time to the project with minimal gains in removal and installation of the water pump. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Hi Josh, thanks for the question. You will want to check the Prestone coolant mix you are using, to see if it allows mixing with Dexcool, or you may need to choose a completely different, universal coolant mix. You could also drain and flush the entire system and remove the Dexcool if you prefer, then you could exclusively use the yellow Prestone if it cannot be mixed with Dexcool. Coolant manufacturers have made some compatibility improvements in the last few years, due to this issue. Thanks for watching and sharing your question. When Dexcool originally was introduced, it was meant to be solely used within these systems, especially back in the 90s - and on this model vehicle in particular. However, after a number of years, some universal coolants were introduced that could in fact be mixed with the Dexcool, for systems and vehicles such as this. Please check your coolant label to be sure, prior to adding to your system.
