Good video. Was thinking of buying an older model of this car but it had a bad water pump. After watching this video: I can easily fix that. ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL? idk if you said that but some videos mention it others dont. please tell me. i have a 1994 olds cutlass ciera 3.1l v6 will the maintenance be exactly the same as in the video?
@JoeTheAutoGuy9 жыл бұрын
Tony S technically almost all automotive repair procedures start with removing the negative terminal. the repair in this question you dont have to, the good reason to do it is if you leave it connected and you touch the positive terminal to anything else metal in the car it will arc, if you disconnect it you would have to touch the negative terminal to arc and thats the reason most procedures start with removing the negative side, in all repairs if im disconnecting a connector or getting close to wires etc. then i disconnect it

I know this has been around for a while, but we're (actually son & his friend) working on a 2003 olds alero with the 3.4L and they seem to be having difficulty lining up the bolts on the motor (and possibly the gasket?). They got all the bolts in but 1, and then tried to force it and snapped the head off. Besides having to figure out how to get the bolt out and then finding a replacement (new waterpumps don't come with them) I have a feeling the water pump only goes on 1 way and they have the wrong one. The holes in the WP housing LOOK to be evenly spaced, but I noticed the comment in your video that the gasket only goes on 1 way, which to me also means it may only fit properly on the motor 1 way. How do I know which part is the top? Other cars they have worked on had the matching tab on the motor to line it up. The alero (and whatever you were working on in this video) do not. I don't want to assume the "tab on the left" in your final tighten of the bolts would be correct for the alero but am wondering if you would know or the best way to figure it out. We live in MN and it's been 10degrees outside so looking to minimize trial and error as much as possible. GREAT informative video. I actually learned quite a bit. Thank you.
@JoeTheAutoGuy6 жыл бұрын
dwallyworld4 to be honest i dont remember which part was the top but it does only go in 1 way , what i did was line the gasket to engine and make a mental note of it and line the waterpump and gasket while puting it on the engine orientation appropriately
@dwallyworld46 жыл бұрын
wow! thanks for the quick reply! I'll have them check the tab to see if it's to the left like it was when you torqued yours. If it is, I wonder if they could have the gasket off causing the bolt to be a bit off as it goes into the motor.

I'm not sure about the 3.1's or 3.4's, but on the 3800's, the water pumps need PTF thread sealant on some of the bolts. Just saying incase that is needed for this one.
@redblue40rc338 жыл бұрын
+Jared Boss the 3800 series engines are a totally different set up and location on the engine...i had a 2006 buick lacrosse...it was a pain to change out...power steering pump had to be loosened and rotated back to firewall and water heater housing had to be completely taken off to get to water pump off..and also you have those plastic elbows to replace as well, which crack or break and leak fluid everywhere...poor design on GM's part....one of the bolts for the power steering pump was about 5 or 6 inches long and you have to go thru the PS pulley holes to get to it...BUT THERE IS NO HOLES ON THIS ONE TO SEAL WITH SEALANT...ALL METAL INSERT...NO WATER-FLOW THRU THEM.....this job is alot easier..:)

@JoeTheAutoGuy6 жыл бұрын
if its a gasket it is supposed to seal it does not require rtv or sealer of any kind , many people do and ive seen excessive use to where it gets into the pump and thermostat
@icemancometh86793 жыл бұрын
@@JoeTheAutoGuy I think maybe the reason they want you to use sealant is to hold the gasket in place on the water pump while you're installing it - you know kind of sticky.
@dwaynecollins49742 жыл бұрын
@@icemancometh8679 you are correct sir. I've seen people goo so much of that on there that the gasket actually leaks because of the RTV LOL
