while you are doing this, you should be looking to put on a top end of 086 cylinder heads and HO intake from a 2.3L Quad 4 for better performance.

GM literally kept this same design for the water pump, ignition coil and power steering pump on the Ecotec's. Ecotec got a lot of its design from the Quad 4.

Well I don't have the car any longer and there aren't many of these still out there, so I probably won't ever have one to do. You have to remove the exhaust manifold and and timing cover and the coolant pipe that runs under the engine. You will want to replace the thermostat while you are under there too. It is not a real easy job, but it's doable.

Hello friend: I have a 1995 Grand AM 2.3l, the engine is very similar, Your video helped me when changing the pump. Could you help me? Recently the engine shows misfires on cylinder 1 and 4. I have changed the spark plugs, boots, coils and ignition module but the problem continues. Injectors and injection pulse (1 and 4) are fine. Could the crankshaft position sensor be the cause of this cylinder 1 and 4 spark failure? Thanks
@frugalprepper
@frugalprepper 3 жыл бұрын
These engines can be temperamental with the ignition.. I have had luck with filling up the coil on boots with some dielectric gel, as they have a tendency to leak spark around the boots. Also did you use genuine Delco Plugs? These engines have problems with other brands. You could try to replace the crank position sensor, but I doubt that is the issue if it is firing on the the other two. Also be aware that the PCM often has trouble identifying exactly which cylinders are misfiring and often tells you the wrong cylinders on this engine. So if you have a problem on 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 that would make more sense as they are the same coil pack. I would scope it the the cam and crank sensor to know for sure but I understand you may not have a scope.
@PPPP-qi4kh
@PPPP-qi4kh 3 жыл бұрын
@@frugalprepper Thank you for your help and quick response. I do not have a scope, but I will try to change the sensors to rule out its failure. If it were the PCM, do I need any special procedures after the change or just replace it?

My code reader p0300 which all the cylinders where misfiring. Came to the conclusion timing chain needed to be replaced. The car starts up and runs but as soon as I put into gear it quits. So I hope this is the problem. Been watching ur video. It helps
@frugalprepper
@frugalprepper 3 жыл бұрын
These almost always throw a P0300 on a single cylinder misfire. The computer isn't able to tell which cylinder it is and will throw a Random Cylinder Misfire code. Check the hose that goes to your MAP sensor first. They rot out and cause all kinds of trouble on these. Then coil packs, coil back cover and the coil on boot and plugs next. It would be rare that an engine that runs has a bad timing chain. Even it if was stretched a little it wouldn't cause this.
@dragonbulley
@dragonbulley 3 жыл бұрын
@@frugalprepper I had replaced the spark plugs and the coil packs and the fuel filter last October. Before the car quit this morning. I had noticed it was getting harder to start and the engine was making clicking noises, it was starting to rattle while idling and often it would throw that code but I ignored it cuz I thought it was rich again. But it started to.misfire more often. Until today when it just lost power. Now when I put into gear it just quits. And if I leave it running to backfires once or twice then it dies. So I am not sure what else it could be. It's a 22 year old car with 145,000 miles on it.

@frugalprepper
@frugalprepper 3 жыл бұрын
@@dragonbulley Yea off of the map sensor there is a little rubber hose that is molded and goes back to the intake. They rot out and it's hard to see. You can replace it with a 6 inch piece of vacuum line that you just bend around in a big loop. These engine had a speed density fuel strategy, so when the map sensor quits reading the vacuum pressure correctly they act really crazy, because that is the primary way it know how much fuel to deliver. There is no Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Quick Question...does this water pump have a weep hole?...need to change my 1998 2.4L Water pump 150K...can you do it without removing the exhaust?? Thanks DVD:)
@frugalprepper
@frugalprepper 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if it does have a weep hole. It's been a while since I did this, or worked on any other ones, most of them are in the junk yards and have been crushed by now, but I don't remember seeing a weep hole. You are not going to be able to get to everything to remove it without taking off the exhaust manifold. The good thing is the exhaust manifold is pretty easy to to get off on these and the manifold bolts are never rusted in place (At least I have never had any that are) There is 3 bolts on the main flange on the bottom and then you take off the top ones and it comes out. There is no EGR ports, tubes or valves to worry about. The California emissions ones have a EGR valve but it is actually mounted on the on the opposite side of the head so you won't have to mess with it.

@@lightcapmath2777 yessir, they DO have a weephole. Am currently looking for the last bolt (that i dropped in the engine bay) tightening up the timing cover thanks to this awesome guy! I doubt i would jave been able to replace my water pump without him. Started weeping about 2 months ago, found the weep about a month ago, and the car has been up on jacks getting tore up and rebuilt since. Every step of the way there has been some serious hassle with this particular can of worms. Lol. I wish you luck. So far I've done my heater hoses and valve, spark plugs, covers, gaskets, belt tensioner, on and on. The joys of classic car maintenance. :)

Rust free Arizona car, and I'm a pb blaster. However, I didn't have a right angle impact, a pass through socket set, or a set of flex head mini ratchtes when i started the project, and after a six hour manifold pull, and breaking my 1/4 to 1/2 impact adaper trying to get off my balancer flywheel, I would definitely recommend those tools. I went with kobalt. Used a whole liter of acetone cleaning the grime off the inside of my timing cover and ungunking some of the 23 years accumulation. Wish i would've gor the gallon. Trying permatex spray sealant to defer valve cover seal maintenance (leak). (Till i have an engine puller, this car is a wee bit tight to work on in the engine bay). Gonna run some engine flush through soon. 135k miles 99 oldsmobile alero.

Hello Duane from Ontario: I have a coolant leak on my 98 Pontiac Sunfire GT with 263500 km on it . The GM mechanic replaced the water pump due to a leak coming from the weep hole in the water pump. He says it is coming from the thermostat and lower metal water neck pipe. It only drips after the engine gets hot. He says the pipe may be warped slightly causing the leak. I have a brand new water neck pipe from GM and a GM gasket for the thermostat. Do you know how to remove the lower water neck pipe from the vehicle?
@frugalprepper
@frugalprepper 3 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue. It's really common on these. You need to pull out the thermostat and coat the rubber gasket on it with Indian Head Gasket Sealant then re-install it and it won't leak any more. You can take the cover off of the exhaust manifold (if it is still there. A lot of them have rusted off or the bolts that held it own rusted out and snapped off) and reach the two bolts that hold the thermostat on with a long 1/4 in drive extension through the manifold. Its tricky but a whole lot easier than removing the manifold.
@frugalprepper
@frugalprepper 3 жыл бұрын
I you do want to remove the whole pipe you can just remove the two bolts with the long 1/4 inch extension. Then there is one bolt that holds it to the front of the oil pan then it runs to the lower radiator hose. I would still put the Indian head sealant on the gasket on the thermostat. Also make sure you don't put the thermostat in upside down. It will fit but it won't open that way and it will overheat (ask me how I know, LOL)

When you were installing the Chain I noticed that you turned the camshaft back in order to get the chain over the water pump why? the water pump doesn't require any specific clocking so it would create an out of time scenario to move the cam gear as opposed to rotating the waterpump JUST SAYING
@frugalprepper
@frugalprepper 6 жыл бұрын
No I was putting the cam where it belong so the chain would fall into the teeth of the cam sprocket. You want the chain tight between the cams and crank on the left all the slack needs to be where the tensioner is.
