Small story: I moved to the Netherlands a few years ago.One month, I bought a above ground swimming pool, I set it up and filled it up with 40k liters. The next day, I received a letter in the post (Yes the postal service here is excellent), requesting for me to confirm why there was sudden jump in the water usage and for me to send a photograph of my meter. The water company was concerned that there was a leak, incorrect meter reading from their side, or some other problem. That is the difference between a 1st world country and africa

Similar challenges are being faced by residents in Pinetown, KZN. My mother, a pensioner, living alone, is dealing with water shortages during the day, availability only between 22h00 & 06h00, and an exorbitant water bill of R80k for the month of Feb. This comes right after addressing a substantial R60k electricity bill, that led her to switch to prepaid electricity in Oct last year.

@nadirnikakhtar112910 ай бұрын
I have been investing the above for years, but in botswana. Airlock has been an issue around the world for many years. Air billing needs air eliminators before ever meter. The water service provider always denies air billing, always, its their mandate. Its hard to get video or digital evidence of air billing unless there is a long interruption in water service to allow for air buildup. However air still passes the meter regardless but in smaller quanities as it is shared along the line of meters in the cuirt
@warrenmckay982610 ай бұрын
We had the same issue in Bryanston in 2022 and 2023. Joburg water rejected our claim of air spinning the meter. My take is that they cant go without the free revenue. a single outage costs us ~R7k. Now we shutoff the valves ever time there is an outage.

The new reservoir has been standing empty since completion a few years ago, yet JW used its completion for so much positive publicity. They even had a major launch event with JHB Mayor and other dignitaries in attendance. All of that for nothing though. The community has had to adjust their lives around the water shedding and its now basically a part of life.

An important detail missed out is that water empties out of houses in high level areas when there is no water overnight, then when water comes back in the morning, all the air in the pipes is pushed up from lower lying areas to higher level houses. If a toilet is flushed the night before, it means billable air surges in for ages at an alarmingly expensive rate until the cistern fills with actual water. Another factor missed, is having to run taps for 10 mins daily to get air out before having a shower is even possible, which is also billed. I've suffered the same issues at both my old and current houses.
