Hi. I've been on this method for almost 3 yrs (4ab&c hair, waistlength+). Yes, my hair is soft, still growing, has sheen and clumps more in certain areas (my 4c said "nah" lol, and I'm fine with that). I get hair compliments whether loose or secured. I like this method, really like it, but I modify it occasionally to fit changes in my lifestyle. Yes, clarification at the start is important (I used a white vinegar solution b/c that is what I had on hand). I kept my hair in large twists and added shea butter to the ends. I washed daily and had full sebum coverage by the end of the 2nd wk; I guess I produce a lot - and even then my hair was long so that was super quick. For the remainder of the 1st yr or so, I was strictly water only except when occasionally cleansing the scalp with ACV or a Tea Tree oil mixture (don't ask me how often, I did it on whim). I also got lazy to where I water-washed as little as 3X/wk (plus my hair need more drying time in twists). During my 2nd yr (or so), I cut down to mostly once a week. Early last yr, I started incorporating Oil Rinsing once in a while to combat dullness (a gray cast due to overproduction of sebum) and the oil added shine and aided in detangling. FYI sebum can be sticky or waxy when wet; at the time, mine was waxy. Of course I should've just clarified with ACV (which helps "reset", but doesn't completely strip all the sebum), but for whatever reason, I skipped over it. Later in the year, I started to Oil Rinse during every "wash" and use combs again (I was, and now am again, a fingercomber) to get thoroughly detangled hair - fingers weren't cutting it and had some matting, which may have been due to stretching out "wash" sessions && not being thorough...no problems these days *shrug*...yet. *If I have any tips, I would say:* 1. Definitely supplement with oil, butters, or natural creams if you feel your ends are dry (especially in the beginning). Or even in styling, if it makes it easier. 2. Make sure your hair dries completely between washes (even if you have to wait 2 days), so that you don't get a funky scalp. 3. Get on a clarifying schedule. Know when your hair is about to reach an overproduction of sebum and take care of it before it's a problem. 4. Don't forsake natural moisturizing or strengthening treatments (if you see the need). There's room for them at the table :) 5. Your hair won't smell like flowers. It also won't smell artificial ;) It'll smell natural, earthy, like an oil. If you want an alternative scent, make a water-essential oil mixture and use it in a spray bottle. Voila. Personally, I don't do that and I've been told that my hair smells "sooo good"...and never anything negative smell-wise. 6. Watch "Wateronlyhairwash" here on KZbin; Her vids helped me (and others) a great deal and she gives a lot more information and tips. Sorry I wrote so much. It be a bit unorganized b/c I'm tired, lol, but I hope it helps. Best of luck.

It's not instant. It probably takes 2 to 4 weeks for the sebum to be produced as your hair detoxes from the shampoos. You must massage the scalp to awaken the sebum, and put your head upside to awaken the sebum. You do not need all that clarifying stuff. Your body is smart and highly adaptable.
@I_AM68687 жыл бұрын
I been doing this for 2 years I notice many KZbinrs do not stress getting a filtered shower head. It didn't work for me until I started filtering my water and now my hair loves it. Also your diet really shows up on your hair with this method, fresh raw fruits vegetables and herbs are your friends. I use tea tree oil on my scalp once a month. In the summer time i wash every day (more sebum production) winter time once a week.

I tried it some years ago when I came across the KZbinr 'wateronlyhairwash'. I rinsed my hair in the shower everyday & applied jojoba to the ends of my hair until my my hair was fully covered. For me it took about 6-8 weeks to reach full sebum coverage. My hair was MBL at that time. To help with the frizz I mostly wore braidouts & buns. I noticed that detangling became a breeze & my 3c/4a curls popped! I loved it really. I don't think it did anything for growth, but I definitely liked the way my hair felt & looked. Also, I was taking am omega complex supplement at the time & believe that it caused my sebum structure to change allowing it to flow down my hair freely & easily. I've hear a lot of good things about the Liggets shampoo bar. I also follow 22nd century woman & would like to purchase her shampoo bar soon. I've heard nothing but good things.

I love this method. When my hair is not protective styled, I wash it daily with just water. I currently have a twa, but it was the same when my hair was bsl. I clarify as needed. I do make my own mix of natural oils and a shea mixture to use as needed. Just listen to your hair. Nothing is drying out if you do it properly. 3 years in and no regrets.

Shawntas Way I did it for 2 years. It's amazing. Once you get complete sebum coverage it's literally the best feeling ever. My hair grew faster, was easy to detangle and defined! The only reason I stopped was because after pregnancy I had bad postpartum shedding and it was wayyy tooo tangled. With water only washing you can use like a banana deep conditioner every 3-6 months that helps. You have to give it time for the sebum to distribute or it won't seem like it works.

The water washing method isn't a true cleansing routine. It works if you do it every few days and more so if you hair is short. Our hair tends to be dry because it's hard for sebum to travel far down the shaft due to our kinky curl hair...that's why Caucasian hair gets greasy and ours doesn't. Also you have to use fingers or scalp massager to get that sebum to move

I'm trying out shampoo bars. I've ordered three of them and can't wait for them to get here. One from Obia Naturals and two from 22nd century woman here on KZbin. They're supposed to clean the dirt, but spread the sebum. I only add my own diy mango butter and almond oil mix. It's not whipped, it's more like a pomade but it makes my hair soft and silky and it's light weight compared to Shea butter

I stopped because i was transitioning with wigs and only wearing my hair out 2 to 3 weeks every 6 months or so. When i went fully natural i needed to experiment and here I am 2 years later wanting to try this method again. I hope it works out for you!

I started this method today, due to really bad scalp irritation. I've had scabs and a couple of very painful bumps in my crown area. I don't know what the cause of this was exactly..... So I'm going to water wash & seal only my hair strand with avocado oil. I'm hoping my scalp will heal & I can go back to deep conditioning, etc. without my scalp being irritated!!!!!! I'm hoping that water washing, & a little avocado oil will still aid in growth......

I tried the water only washing method for about a month. It was fun to wet my hair everyday but it took a long time to get full coverage. My ends looked horrible. Also, the point I thought from videos is to use natural items. So you can use oils that we eat with but nothing else. I stopped because my sebum was taking forever to cover. Some women got better results keeping their hair in twists. I didn't like the way it looked after awhile.

I'm strict water only...nothing but water. Been doing it for almost 1.5 years now. It only works it... ...if I clarify with distilled water. My tap water is a little hard. Those minerals mix with my sebum and make it white, thick, waxy, and hard. It's disgusting, and ends in hair fall. But distilled water has no minerals in it, because purified. So it removes those minerals the tap leaves in my hair. It leaves my sebum so soft, thin, and smooth it's absurd. It almost distributes itself it's so thin and soft. I do use bone combs, but only between washes. Very little knots, and my hair re-clumps itself after I comb.

Im sure this method actually works really well for some people. But I cant even go a full week without washing my hair with a shampoo the longest ill go is 4 days and even thats pushing it for my hair.. My scalp aint feelin it and i have type 4a hair so my hair loves to be washed and conditioned and thrives off it. But i understand some peoples hair cant take frequent washing and they must go every two weeks.. But ive never been able to go past a full week plus im just OCD about my hygiene so i be feelin some type of way about not cleansing my scalp every 3 days.. To eaches own tho if it works for you and your hairs thriving then stick with it we all have different hair even if you might think someone else has the same exact hair as you by the way it looks on the outside trust me its not the same at all we all have different genetic make ups.. Hair is like fingerprints and is very unique from person to person.

You have very beautiful hair, but in my opinion I just don't think this is a good method for anyone for receiving moisture from sebum. Curly hair is extremely dry because sebum travels down our hair so slowly anyway. The longer the hair is, the longer the sebum has to travel. To each is own of course, but it just makes me think by the time the hair is coated with sebum, the hair could possibly break off from lack of moisture.

I tried it and I loved it! ...with some exceptions :) I followed washonlywashing youtuber. So the beginning was very hard. It's alot alot of maintenance. It was dry but this is when you have to really give your hair 24 hr attention so that it stays hydrated. You can't just leave it in the begininng stages you have to constantly give it attention. Almost like a new born baby lol. I water washed everyday to bring the sebum down. I followed WOW youtuber exactly. Then I water washed it every 2-3 days. The hard part was constantly having to massage your hair. Long showers to pull the sebum down with hot water. I probably could have reached full coverage or close to it, but like I said it's a lot of maintenance. I got tired of following the steps. But I finally got close to full coverage. Boy but I have to say once you get full sebum coverage for me it was close to it, it is amazing!!!! I would get compliments everyday. I would get ask what products do I use in my hair? What do I do to my hair? Do I twist it? I would ask people to smell my hair. They would say I don't smell anything. My hair was completely tangle free. It literally would take me 3 minutes to detangle my whole head of hair. I have armpit length. It was the best EVER that my hair looked EVER. I didn't need any conditioners or anything. The reason I stopped is because I henna every 4 to 6 weeks. I didn't even reach max coverage of sebum when I had to henna. The thought of me having to start the whole process over was too much too soon. Yes you do need to clarify with WOM but being a first timer to this process was too soon and too much for me to take at that point. But I will go back to it once I stop being lazy lol. Good luck with trying it and I'll be watching your journey to see how you're doing :)
@Prov31Beauty-Seeinglassfull6 жыл бұрын
Awww that was really nice! ANd thats all the work done, you wouldnt have needed to do all over again just cos you used henna. She did too and said your sebum comes back much quicker. Henna does TOTALLY strip it, at least for her. But mainly, once your scalp has become accustomed to producing that sebum, it stays like so....awwww. Welll done though, at least you have an experience to pull you back.
