When I had my Folkboat I used to collect plastic milk bottles and store them around the boat as my only source of water. Always clean and fresh and free to renew.

Sir you are the best storyteller of all times thanks. I do boat transfers in Turkey, one of my customer was in a hurry and I jumped on the boat then we sailed immediately. He said boat was full of foods and drinks so we don't need any grocery shopping, also I saw fridge was full and I didn't ask for how much "drinking water" left. There was no drinking water left so we used the fresh water tanks to drink, we boiled to drink tea, it was a used boat so you can guess the fresh water tanks condition :) And then we ran out of LPG. Yeah that was fun... it was a 3 day nice sailing with full of beers but no water. :)

Sounds like a classic yacht delivery. I remember it well. Hang in there Mate and keep drinking the beer!

Fun video……yes, we did the Atlantic with 50 gallons, lots left over. Now, my very simple watermaker, easily repaired, keeps me and my small dog going! But I sure remember the good old, fun old days…..thanks, Andrew

Wise words ..and not just regarding our water onboard.. It would seem we need to apply the same logic to our electricity and gas at home too ..cheers Tom

When we did our circumnavigation in 2001-3, we had no watermaker, and used Nick's method almost exactly. Took saltwater showers and rinsed off with fresh. Never worried about water.

A mate and I had a guest aboard in the Grenadines years ago. Like with your charter guest, we felt the pain of realizing we would never get a land dweller to conserve water. We could, however teach her to use the VHF and there was then a water delivery barge in Bequia. The solution was to place our guest in charge of daily water deliveries (and associated expensed) and use all she wanted. Anyway, i think the barge driver took to her and we never ran low on water in Bequia again.

I live off water collected from my roof in rural Australia - I believe this is a method that some newer boat builders are starting to employ.

Sage advice, as always! My boat presents me with a bit of a conundrum... she's a Contessa 32 so she's capable to sail anywhere, but because of her slender hull shape, tankage for fuel and water is extremely limited. If I'm going to be away from civilization for more than a couple weeks, I guess I'll have to strap a bunch of jerry cans on deck.

I sailed for years with fuel jerries on deck. Lashed tight they were no problem. The didn't look great, but when I ran my engine in a calm a thousand miles from land I didn't mind that so much! Good luck with the Contessa. One of the best boats ever.

You could get yourself one of these. Katadyn Survivor 35 Half hour of pumping will get you enough water to survive for the day if the need arises. 4.5 litres per hour
