What a delightful short film. Leaning by seeing examples like this makes it so much fun. Hard to believe long tailed ducks can dive that deep!

Oh, I love ducks !! All ducks !! The information on the Grebe was so fascinating. I love their little short tails. The long tails were also fascinating. They made cool sound . The cormorants are plentiful at Smithville Lake. I love them . They are really something to see, when they roost and hold their wings to dry. The dead trees in the water, are brim full of basking cormorants . Thankyou Jo 😁 I am going to watch this video again . Great 👍

Wow, what enthusiasm, Pamela! Thank you. And I agree about the Grebe's adorable little short tails. Same kind of cute as a bunny rabbit. I liked it that you mentioned specific things like the tail, and I'm glad you enjoyed the movie so much.

there is no music more beautiful than hearing in february/march the spring birds singing, the sound of summer right around the corner from a dreary long dark winter here in northern norway.

Thanks for writing to tell me how much you enjoyed the video. Yes, birding is a great hobby, not just because it heightens your appreciation of the natural world, but even, so the scientists tell me, because the wonder you experience is great for your health. Win/win, right? And I think you've come to a good place on the internet to help you get started. I have more than 300 movies that could build you a decent foundation. Enjoy yourself!

I'm no expert on ducks, Michael, but I did enjoy learning about these four waterbirds. I hope you've had a chance to see them yourself. We get the Pied-billed Grebes on the little lake in our subdivision during spring and fall migration, so I see them regularly, and the Cormorants are common. I've also got movies up about Wood Ducks, Wood Ducks mating, female Wood Ducks with babies, female Hooded Mergansers and babies, Northern Shovelers, Blue-winged Teal, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Mandarin Ducks, female Lesser Scaups diving, and this one about Mallards fighting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5WpmIurZbVgpKs.

*Great propelling with the feet in the back* That is a faster deep dive too, has to be a great thing. Winter on land must be a struggle then or just goes South.

Hearing from my viewers and responding to their comments is a pleasure. Unfortunately I must forgo answering comments for awhile because the rotator cuff tear in my left arm is healing slowly, and I just learned that I have carpal tunnel syndrome in my right arm. I seem to have a body made out of spare parts- made on the cheap in China. So I won’t be answering comments before the beginning of August, if then. But if there’s something you’d like to tell me, please do so. I’ll be interested in what you have to say. It’s just that you’ll have to guess at what I would have answered. (I’ll be pasting this answer to every comment I get for the next few weeks.)

Great compilation Jo. Excellent footage and information on the 4 diving birds. Especially enjoyed the Groucho Marx and Charlie Chaplin references and with the Pied-billed Grebe - the 12 oz steak. Your wit knows no bounds and is so enjoyable to catch.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME4 жыл бұрын
When I'm planning a new script, I want those bits of wit. And when I can't come up with any right away--which is usually--I get frustrated and down on the whole project. Then I bitch about it to my husband, who always says, you'll figure it out. You always do. So I appreciate your specific comment. In fact, I wondered if I should take out the Groucho Marx eyebrows bit because younger people wouldn't know what I was talking about but decided that it was the right description. Their loss if they don't get it.

@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME4 жыл бұрын
The Pied-billed was the first bird I got serious about ... what shall I call it, stalking? When I was new at filming wildlife, I spent hour after hour figuring out how to outsmart him and get the shots I wanted. It was the first time I realized how much persistence and cunning were going to be necessary in this hobby. He inspired such determination because he was just so cute! I like your word cheeky for him.

Really great information in this video. Thank you. It's funny, but it seems that most people are familiar with the bird behavior that causes some species to spread their wings, in order to look bigger in the face of a threat. So when family and friends tell me, "I saw this great big black bird with his wings arched threatening me!", they are always shocked when I tell them he's just drying his wings! :)

I am Native American and the word "squaw," is more than political correctness. It is considered universally offensive by Indigenous peoples in America and Canada due to its use for hundreds of years in a derogatory context, and usage that demeans Native American women because the term is sexist and racist. The US Department of Interior will be changing the names of 650 sites that contained the word. This is about systems change and writing historical wrongs towards our communities. I would recommend you do some reserach on this since the systems change is occuring from the federal government to the community level taking action. Otherwise, I enjoyed the video.
