I grew uo in Tennessee where the Purple Iris is the state flower, we called them flags. Of course we had other colors, too, but the purple was popular. I remember having to learn to draw the petals in the 5th grade when we studied TN history. I still love them.

I liked this video. You’ve done it again! I’ve had six years of art training (an intense foundation) and nobody ever touched on this great basic necessary detail. I just tried all ten petals. Thrilled with the iris, hydrangea & hydrangea with the use of watercolour pencils. The tissue technique for the poppy petal ... I learnt the hard way not to attempt this if you have long nails unless you have a nice thick wad of tissue! I like your emphasis on painting flowers like a portrait of the individual flower - like painting a person rather than a human being, although I reckon we all look much the same to flowers! Thank you, a valuable lesson in water control too.

Lovely video. I did learn some new techniques and how I can grow my own painted flowers by using them. I love flowers and paint them frequently. I think that it takes a strong knowledge of color theory. You are very correct that many beginners mix mud, brown or grey. It takes the knowledge of when to add very small amounts of color to get that shady neutralized red fo example. Flowers also have a glow as the light hits them that your paintings capture. Gorgeous ♡

Years ago, while watching Martha Stewart making a flower arrangement, I learned an interesting trick which I believe keeps flowers with a hollow stems, fresh for longer. She poured water into the stem full up, put her finger on the end and flipped it into the water filled vase. Then she made sure there were no air pockets. I think you could easily take some of the stem off the bottom while it is still fully immersed in the water.

This tutorial is definitely going into my “saved” videos, as I enjoy doing flowers of different types. By studying the petal shapes and colors, I have really learned a lot more about the flowers than I did when I cast a glance over to them. Having to render them on paper cements their details in my mind. Since getting the effects that I want is not always easily attainable, I definitely will be studying this video over and over agin and practicing all your helpful techniques. Thank you. My favorite flower to paint is the rose. I have a “wildish” yellow rose in my yard that opens quickly and has few petals to work with…..it’s a floribundas bush. After it’s yellow faze it quickly turns almost white with big ( and few) petals, So my problem is how to deal with these middle petals when they open up fully and have huge folds that turn back on themselves and are quite geometric.

Love the way you respect the body of the paint, even though watercolour is the thing which isn't guache by definition. I'm talking about your poppy petal; I've never dared to go that strong and as a consequence that method of lifting out was not such an option and I've never caught that tissue paper fragility thing that you seem to get by flying in the face of reason.

Lots of helpful tips, thank you. May I ask how you get rid of the pencil lines when you draw your flowers? or perhaps you leave them? because I find once pencil lines get wet I can't erase them
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber 4 жыл бұрын
Keep them light, I do tend to erase as I go along. If you have painted up to a line for example you can let the paint dry then remove the line, rather than paint the next area and block it in with paint. As soon as you no longer need it remove it. Some can be eraser through dry paint, some is covered by dark paint. Semi opaque colours like cadmium yellow can be bad for blocking in the pencil.

In the tutorial you have already drawn the shapes with pencil? What do suggest we new watercolor painters do to make sure we have the shapes when we start out? Is there certain pencils we should use? The watercolor pencils?

Unless you are going for a very loose effect it's good to draw first. My favourites are currently Caran' d Ache museum quality pencils.

Love your videos! Your channel has really grown from a year ago when I first started getting into painting & watching videos. Would really love to see you do a similar type of video using different leaf types & mixing the different shades of green & shadows. Would be sooo helpful. So many teachers just say "add leaves" & then we all end up painting generic looking leaves instead of trying to get the spirit & nuance of the specific types of leaves in the subject. Also, how do you get the look of frilly & crinkled edges when shading petals (& leaves) that have those qualities? So difficult to even draw those shapes, but getting them to look "right" when painting is even harder. Also, would be very interested in a video that showed these same flower petals from the side & how to shade them to look right. Esp the daffodil center...how to get that trumpet & it's edges to look right when in a partially turned or side view. Thanks!

Thanks Jen, some great ideas there... I was thinking about a greens video 🤔 I am really pleased my channel has grown so much, I have been trying really hard to improve my videos! Onward and upward 😄

Lovely tutorial, as usual! Quick question...Ever since you did a video highlighting some unusual colors, I've been intrigued by the Brown Madder color you've mentioned. On Jackson's website, Windsor and Newton have a color called "Brown Madder"(no "Lake"). However, Talens Rembrandt does have a color named "Brown Madder Lake". In both videos you said it was Brown Madder Lake---but by Winsor and Newton. Which is correct? I'm leaning towards the Rembrandt's as it has the "Lake" in the name. But thought I might check in to see if you could clarify🙂. PS: I am loving your videos, they have really made quarantine a lot easier to take. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your talent!

You are very welcome. Well I could have sworn it was Winsor and Newton, but just pulled it out of my art box... and the winner is... Perm. Madder Lake Brown by Talens Rembrandt! Blame my middle aged brain :-)

I just thought of something, probably a stupid question. Tell me, is black & white (greyscale) watercolour painting a thing? Does anybody do it or is it just not pretty enough?

People do it as an exercise, they tend to use ink for tonal work as you can get it much darker.
