I usually work with more opaque mediums therefore I'm more used to direct color, so when I do watercolor I want to layer paint. It's satisfying!!

I'm noticing you have some very interesting and unique.... subject matter. I don't mean the type of fruit you're painting, I mean the.... subject of the lesson. Today was demonstrating the difference between a one pass direct method of painting, and a layered approach. Really nice, thank you!!

I did enjoy it, it was very helpful to see them side by side. I didn’t realize that you put so many layers into your works either. Hope you do more videos like this.

I am glad it was helpful! Layers are a great way to work because I can slowly build the shape.

Lorraine thank you for this video. I didn't realize you could lift off color on the layered sample to reveal the color below. I guess you have to lift carefully! Also, the layered sample looks more vibrant like you said! Great lesson.

Thanks Angel. If the layer is still wet, lifting back to see the color below or the white of the paper works pretty good.

I like the layered apple best as it looks more vibrant. Could you have lifted more highlights without using masking fluid? So very helpful and great explanations. Thanks for this great video!

I agree. Yes, you could lift more highlights. Depending on the colors staining level, you may not get back to really white paper.

Thank you, Lorraine! This is the first video I watched of yours, but I really liked it! You explained everything very well. I'm trying to get into oils and watercolor and move away from acrylics, since those paints have a lot of toxic ingredients in them and I'd rather work with something more natural. I don't know much about watercolor technique, but I'm glad I can layer things like acrylics! Have a great day and stay well! 😊

Thank you for sharing Lorraine. I learned a lot. The best was watching that yellow revealed again. I also allow my paint to dry naturally between layers. The blow dryer does weird things to the paint. It looks like your initial washes are pretty thin, right? I’m still trying this layering out and having trouble getting my wash just right. Practice, practice, and more practice! Blessings to you from a new subscriber!

You are so welcome! Yes, the initial washes are thin. Red can go opaque pretty fast, so I tend to do layers or glazes of thin washes. Yes, just keep practicing!

Great video. Im a newbie to watercolour. I dont understand when and why to use cools and warms and you have used them on the apple. Would you mind explaining why you used them ? thanks. Watching from Australia.

Sometimes you use a cool or warm color because that is the local color of an object. Sometimes you might use a cool or warm because of the light on the object. Generally cool colors in the shadow areas and warm colors in the sunlit areas. I hope this helps.

Could you tell more about it in which point it is possible to use heat tool and in which point better not? I always use heat tool to speed up the process but I wasn't aware that it will change colors of my painting! :(

Hi, I use a blow dryer after the shine of the wet paint is gone. If it is still wet using a blow dryer too soon might change the look of the paint. It is not a huge difference, just one I have noticed.
