I agree with everything that is said. Yes, if you use less water, you'll get a dry texture. But there are some instances where you can use it (like backgrounds, highlights for mountains, rocks etc.). The amount of water you'll use just depends on the technique you're gonna do. Some techniques require more water, some require less. It's all about balance.

I am truly amazed by your techniques and your abilities to convey the complexity of watercolor techniques! I have taught watercolor workshops in the past at several levels and I am appreciative of your style! I hesitate to say this but even a seasoned veteran watercolorist can mess up paint ratios! You travel and don’t realize that you have hard water from the tap! Yep ya got a problem and if you have never worked with it before you now have a learning experience you did not count on! It is the same thing buying a new brand of paint and sometimes the manufacturer changes sources even recipes for paint! Even papers change over time as new workers feel like they must make their mark on the company! Perhaps the way dear ol’ Dad did it has become an environmental hazard! I am just so glad to see that your doing well enough to create your videos again! I believe that you have a real voice and attitude that needs to be heard and seen! Please take it easy and keep practicing self care first for you and your family and I refer to your online viewers as a kind of family too! Be well!

I’ve seen that extreme less water is used for creating texture, like when trying to imitate the light reflecting on a water surface in a landscape, in the other hand, too much water can be used for very particular situations, I personally do it when intentionally want to achieve like a “broken” texture. Is important to know the relationship water-pigment-brush to achieve nice flat and gradient colours as to create textures.

I don't like this mindset that there are "mistakes" one needs to avoid when one paints. Dry brushstrokes or blooming watery paint can both create really interesting effects. I mean sure, it's useful to understand how the ratio of water to paint will change the results. But don't be afraid to experiment with it. Personally I absolutely love "blooming" and will very much on purpose go for it whenever I can.

The biggest mistake is not buying artist's grade material.
