Mixing consistency is something that many students have problems with. And I had that problem when I just started. Now as much as I want to give you a secret ninja trick that will transform your sense of mixing. I need to be real with you, this takes practice. But I do want to offer you a good way to practice your mixing.

You've just made me realize a strange habit by me: when I draw I only use black pencils, so I always have these normal black and white drawings. That's because I don't feel so confident, think that using colors could ruin my drawings. Have to learn more about drawing before using colors, have to do one step at a time, I say to myself. But when I use watercolor, which is a medium harder to master, I use colors. And just make messes. It's so weird by me and now I understand it. It's ok to learn watercolor with colors but should know more how to use water before using colors.. That's why I will try this tomorrow (here where I live it's midnight and I'm almost going to sleep), thank you very much for sharing!

It is just such a pleasure to watch you working Eric. It is magic how you so quickly create such a believable copy of that photo in one colour of paint. I wish I could achieve your sensitive and confident touch with a paint brush! Thank you for this video. Very useful indeed.

I love Mission Gold watercolor paints. The colors are so vibrant. Well, of course not this color that you're using for the value study, but the other colors are great. Thanks for this tutorial.

That was an excellent presentation, Eric. I thought I knew value studies but this was an eye opener and an approach I will use. I came away with the concept of consistency. My medium of choice for value studies has always been graphite but watercolor consistency seems easier and faster. Also I like the idea of connecting the same values. Good stuff!

Thank you for this value study tip. I’m a beginner and have learned a lot from your videos, enough to jump off into the deep end of the watercolor pool. I appreciate your honesty in another video about mistakes as part of the creative journey. I’ve a bit as a splash around. Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏼 your split screen multi camera format is great and enhances your easy going and comforting teaching style🤙🏼

Excellent and timely advice again, Eric! I've messed up a space/cosmic painting today with poor consistencies in the colours... value study was okay (not as good as yours) and the first wash but then...mmm...! :) . Definitely going to practice much more value studies as you suggest. Thank you. Again, your value studies are works of art in their own right 🙌...giving me something to aim for 😊

This is a great tip. I have been working on valuestudies in black and white mediums ( mainly charcoal and graphite). I want to work with something more colourful, and have been considering WC. This exercise looks like a good way to dip my to toes in.

Great video. I have done value studies before, both filling in shapes (circle to sphere), and applying to a quick picture. I like the picture method best (like what you are using here). Yes, more of these short skill clips!

Yes, I’ve been doing value studies for a loooong time now - and they always turn out really well BUT the minute I’d want to paint with colour I’d ruined a perfectly good composition... so I am now going back to basics and only using a triad for colour harmony, once I’ve got a handle on that then I’ll introduce 1 - 2 more colours in my palette. Having too many colours is not a good thing especially if you haven’t really played around with triads to gain enough experience to know which colours compliment them... GREAT TIP Eric, thanks.

Excellent tutorial. Many thanks. I find the video speed with which your brush flits between water, cloth, paint and paper a distinct advantage in demonstrating the technique. Is there any advantage in pre mixing ample pools of paint for the three tonal values?

THANK YOU ERIC. Practice, practice, practice. I have one question. Do you usually or always spray your pallet down before you start painting? Thanks again man I really appreciate that you did this. When I watched it I felt like you were talking directly to me. ;)

I am really loving your teaching style! Thank you for your videos. Just a question. For learning purposes, is there ever a way that you could include a drawing that people could print off of what you are painting....what do you suggest for someone that cannot really draw? I sometimes hesitate to do a painting because I feel my limited skill at drawing is holding me back. Maybe you have a video on that already...
@Annsquares
@Annsquares 3 жыл бұрын
You can try starting with simple subjects that won't rely too much on the drawing, like nature or simple landscapes! The other tip for getting a more accurate drawing is the grid method.

What is your opinion on using indian ink washes to practive value? it is much cheaper than watercolor and it handles better at less good paper s(important for people in countries where watercolor is very very expensive)
