Thank you for this! I was struggling to decide between getting payne's grey, neutral tint and lunar black. This helped me to decide on getting the lunar for the granulation effects and just use a primary mix in place of the other two since I love the way it glazed the most.

This was a wonderful, thorough comparison of neutrals! The Sennelier Payne's Grey seemed to produce crisper neutrals, and of course leaned blue or green, and the Neutral Tint produced softer or browner shadow colors (at least on my display). I have Daniel Smith Neutral Tint and only really use it for monochromatic studies--it tends to lean a bit violet, so I've never tried it for shadows. I like indigos and deep violets (like Moonglow) or perylene green for shadows, or use the Jane's grey mix of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue. This has inspired me to do some testing and mixing! Love your channel, looking forward to more paint explorations.

Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun creating this video and learned a lot about the capabilities of neutral tint and payne's grey. I mostly used mine for Monochromatic paintings and would occasionally add it to other paints to darken the tone and create shadows. I have indigo and just recently got Janes grey, plus more greys and colors! I can't wait to test them out! Let me know how your testing and mixing goes!! I will add this neutral test on my website!

I came to this video to try to get a handle on Neutral Tint. As someone hovering between beginner and the lower side of intermediate, I have been seeing and hearing about them. Your video gave me the added bonus of some instruction on Payne's Grey and User Mixes. And I love the monochrome demo sketches at the end. I think, for me, my favorite is the User Mix, because you can with a slight variation angle the color towards towards one of those in the mix; and I get the point about making sure you mix enough if you want it repeated over a large piece. Thanks.

@Scott Kendall thank you so much, I'm happy to know this video was able to help you! I do you all three depending on what effect I'm looking to achieve. But if you can only afford one, it's good to see what your best option would be. And it will be different for each person, depending one subject, style and preferences! Hope you have a wonderful day!:

Excellent lesson. Easy to understand. Loved seeing the differences between the Payne's grey and the Neutral Tint, especially in the glazing. All these years, I've been mixing my own black and didn't know that if I just diluted it a lot, it would be the same as Neutral Tint. Well, I guess I don't have to buy that one!

awesome ... thx for this helpful video and useful tips :) in my neutral tint from "white nights" are red, blue and black pigments ... and if I know this , I can mix it with any other colors. the blues will be more on the cool bluish side, and reds more on the red side. yellow will be greenish and orange will be more olive or brownish and so on... I think neutral tint can be a very usefull color in any picture to get more contrast and deep in it. the other day i created a wonderful spring-like picture with neutral tint and lemon yellow alone. the combination of neutral tint with cadmium yellow medium looked rather autumnal because of the olive tones that result. what i want to try soon is that with neutral tint and umber you can create beautiful winter landscapes. With the choice of your colour combination you can influence the mood of your entire work from the very beginning. i'll keep experimenting and maybe discover some more surprisingly useful colour combinations with my little limited 12 watercolour artist palette and this makes a lot of fun :)
@AlisaLaporteArt2 жыл бұрын
Sissy, Thank you so much for sharing your discoveries and color combinations with us! I love hearing about them and learning more from you as well. With watercolors it's important to get to know what pigments are in our colors because like you mentioned it will influence the mood, tones, and colors it will create. knowing all of this will better help us in our painting. Color theory is quiet amazing. Keep painting and sharing your experiences! 😃

😕 Excellent video idea and execution, but the super bright lights make the Cad Red look like it's light orange. Pretty much takes the purpose out of comparing color mixes when the lighting throws off the colors altogether. 😞 (I realize the side view shot is with a more "normal" lighting and color hue, but I can't clearly see, let alone compare, much of anything from a side glance. Just being honest.)
@AlisaLaporteArt4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment and honesty, I am sorry for the bad lighting that was in this picture, at the time I was using what set up I had and my desk was in front of a window that made things difficult for lighting. Thankfully I have since re positioned my desk and up dated my lighting and camera, so it shouldn't be washed out any more. I do have a high resolution picture of the comparison on my website, so you can see it more clearly. Let me know if you have any other questions, or tips you would like to learn about.

I do not understand Neutral tint. A tint of a color is created by adding white to it. To creat a shade of any color you add black to. In each case you can contine to add black util you have true black. Or white until you have pure white. I do not understand Neutral Tint. A Neutral color is neither warm nor cool it is neutral.
