The differences between illustration board and paper are considerable, and in my opinion it takes either a very practiced artist or a very careful one to paint on board. +Janet Catmull Yes, it does require some practice. It works well for back washes and slow absorption then finishing with refined rendering. Not great for wet in wet or multiple glazes.

Love love love! Had a friend who died very young. He was a painting genius. His gallery shows sold out immediately, won every competition he entered. I always thought he used watercolor paper, but alas in analyzing a few things he painted just for me, nope, cold press illustration board. Going to take up watercolor again, after 50 yr hiatus, so thanks for this review.

In many ways I found illustration board very similar to working on Cartridge paper, the way that the washes would pool on the surface, and the number of backruns that would happen. Love your channel. Excellent work

Have you tried Arches Watercolor Board? It is an extremely nice surface to work on.

+Adam Wallen Yes, it is excellent. It is more like watercolour paper but different in a nice way. Fairly expensive but worth it for major projects.

Really nice painting. I've had a couple illustration boards for a long time but wasn't too sure about how to use them, so thanks for this demonstration. Are these boards similar to watercolor canvas?

+David Jirak this is more absorbent than watercolor canvas but not as much as cold pressed paper. The board comes with different surfaces, also there is watercolor board which is slightly different with smooth, medium and rough surface paper. All worth trying.
