Arches story. My grandmother, a wonderful artist, gave me arches paper as soon as I started painting. Used it for years (I paint very slowly on one intricate painting but really love it). Time passes. Arches used up. I go to buy more paper, recoil at price, try a cheaper brand.... Yowza. SO much worse experience. Try Arches!

Bad paper can make you think you're bad at painting when you're not. It's so worth it to get the right paper. And I have this huge array of brushes and I use the same two brushes for pretty much everything.

Common pencil smudge tip: if you don't want to use a kneaded eraser to lighten the lines much do a light wash with clean water over the graphite and let it dry. Then once you apply watercolor the graphite is sealed and locked into the paper
@samliphied

Well won't the water smudge the graphite?
@benamisai-kham5892
@benamisai-kham5892 Жыл бұрын
@@samliphied I've not had the problem but it could be the pencils I'm using, I use a very light hand and large lightly damp brush that I tap out on a sponge and microfiber cloth (or you can get a staining sponge which I also use instead at times) to make sure it hasn't absorbed too much water, as I don't have a spray bottle that would probably be easier. Also a way to pick up water like paper towels or shop towels preferably (In case any water runs) but I always seal my edges with masking tape, I keep it on flat surface until I start painting with colors to make sure the water doesn't run. When I seal graphite I like to use hair spray but I haven't tried that on watercolor paper or tested how watercolors interact with hairspray so I don't recommend that, use clear wax (or use a white crayon) over the lines if anything else.

Great recommendations! For paper I like to look for big (huge) sheets at the store and cut them to size. That's most of the time much cheaper than blocks or pads! That way I can try different papers too without buying a block/pad for 30+ euros but one or two sheets at a time.

I was extremely blessed when I started at a visual arts focused high school and my dad insisted that if I was to buy a proper watercolour palette, I should get a high standard one. He covered the cost of the Schmincke 18 half pan set when I was 16 for my birthday and I am so grateful for it every day as I still use them, nowadays with much more skill. I agree with everything here, when starting out it is good to get a slightly cheaper set for practice but I also agree that the best brands and the highest price ones are still also worth it. I use Mixed Media paper most often and it is not good for watercolour... But I struggle doing clean lines on watercolour paper. Just gotta get more practice in on it.

Another thing to keep in mind for the difference between hot press and cold press: hot press dries faster and it's really great for gradients especially since it's a smooth paper, it doesn't like having too many layers and you really have to act fast! Cold press meanwhile takes time to dry, it's a much slower process and it loves layers a lot more but there is the slight grain texture. So keep that in mind while grabbing paper! (Also, most cellulose papers or papers that say thin grain/ grain, those are always cold press or at least 95% of the time. If it says smooth grain then usually it's hot press but it's rare to find that in cellulose papers so yeah!)

My favourite synthetic detail brush was recently destroyed in a gouache painting gone wrong and in my country, it is nearly impossible to find a good brush in physical art stores (Amazon shipping fees and taxes are crazy for my country and unless it’s a brush brand I know and love, I find it hard to buy brushes online). This is really informative. Thank you so much!

I use arteza or strathmore watercolour journals and its a great way to practice without feeling like you need to make a finished artwork, which i sometimes feel when I'm painting on a loose sheet. reeves is also a good paint option, it has good pigmentation, cheaper than artist grade but a lil bit more expensive than student grade. for paper i did started with canson, but I think it was canson XL mix media, it does wrinkle a bit, but so long as you stretch the paper good and wait for it to completely dry before taking it off, you're good. i switched to derwent when i got more confident in my painting and wanted to build my art portofolio (but i still like canson XL mix media cause i can do multiple types of art without emptying my pocket hehe). mind you i'm just a hobbyist on watercolor, i do like painting, but watercolor is not my first choice.

I started in the world of watercolor with a $ 32 bucks student watercolor set and a série of paper that I still use today, but something that I learned is that sometimes low quality materials can make you haste your art, and other times It can happen the total opposite. In the end after a Lot of experience, now I think that you should start with best quality materials especially If you haver the budget for it because It will not only save a lot of time but also make a lot of diference working with profissional watercolor in your art.

I love my transparent Pelikan's and Van Gogh's - I don't really got much trouble with colour mixing, so I never really needed gargantuan amounts of colours (which doesn't mean I don't have them, I'm a hoarder ^^), are easy to get by here in Germany, are kinda cheap and absolutely decent to say the least - and - especially with that Pelikan box - are quite similar to my opaque Pelikans which were one of the first mediums I painted with, because they're a staple in regular art education in school, so watercolour didn't seem quite so intimidating to me :)

If you live somewhere where honey aquarelle is common, I recommend starting with a cheaper brand. Even the low quality honey aquarelle look better than normal ones of the same quality. They also have the most vibrant colours.
