Bad paper can make you think you're bad at painting when you're not. It's so worth it to get the right paper. And I have this huge array of brushes and I use the same two brushes for pretty much everything.

Common pencil smudge tip: if you don't want to use a kneaded eraser to lighten the lines much do a light wash with clean water over the graphite and let it dry. Then once you apply watercolor the graphite is sealed and locked into the paper
@samliphied Жыл бұрын
Well won't the water smudge the graphite?
@benamisai-kham5892 Жыл бұрын
@@samliphied I've not had the problem but it could be the pencils I'm using, I use a very light hand and large lightly damp brush that I tap out on a sponge and microfiber cloth (or you can get a staining sponge which I also use instead at times) to make sure it hasn't absorbed too much water, as I don't have a spray bottle that would probably be easier. Also a way to pick up water like paper towels or shop towels preferably (In case any water runs) but I always seal my edges with masking tape, I keep it on flat surface until I start painting with colors to make sure the water doesn't run. When I seal graphite I like to use hair spray but I haven't tried that on watercolor paper or tested how watercolors interact with hairspray so I don't recommend that, use clear wax (or use a white crayon) over the lines if anything else.

Great recommendations! For paper I like to look for big (huge) sheets at the store and cut them to size. That's most of the time much cheaper than blocks or pads! That way I can try different papers too without buying a block/pad for 30+ euros but one or two sheets at a time.

I was extremely blessed when I started at a visual arts focused high school and my dad insisted that if I was to buy a proper watercolour palette, I should get a high standard one. He covered the cost of the Schmincke 18 half pan set when I was 16 for my birthday and I am so grateful for it every day as I still use them, nowadays with much more skill. I agree with everything here, when starting out it is good to get a slightly cheaper set for practice but I also agree that the best brands and the highest price ones are still also worth it. I use Mixed Media paper most often and it is not good for watercolour... But I struggle doing clean lines on watercolour paper. Just gotta get more practice in on it.

Another thing to keep in mind for the difference between hot press and cold press: hot press dries faster and it's really great for gradients especially since it's a smooth paper, it doesn't like having too many layers and you really have to act fast! Cold press meanwhile takes time to dry, it's a much slower process and it loves layers a lot more but there is the slight grain texture. So keep that in mind while grabbing paper! (Also, most cellulose papers or papers that say thin grain/ grain, those are always cold press or at least 95% of the time. If it says smooth grain then usually it's hot press but it's rare to find that in cellulose papers so yeah!)

reeves is also a good paint option, it has good pigmentation, cheaper than artist grade but a lil bit more expensive than student grade. for paper i did started with canson, but I think it was canson XL mix media, it does wrinkle a bit, but so long as you stretch the paper good and wait for it to completely dry before taking it off, you're good. i switched to derwent when i got more confident in my painting and wanted to build my art portofolio (but i still like canson XL mix media cause i can do multiple types of art without emptying my pocket hehe). mind you i'm just a hobbyist on watercolor, i do like painting, but watercolor is not my first choice.
