In today’s video, you will see images from our trip to Cape Flattery on the Makah Reservation, on the extreme NW corner of the Olympic Peninsula. I took inspiration from one of my photos and started a watercolor painting of beach grasses atop an eroding cliff side. For the first time, I used ArtGraf pigmented tailor chalks to create some unique new marks. It’s a relaxing view into my Slow Lifestyle.
In this video I have used:
Arches cold press watercolor paper: amzn.to/3yLwEvY
This large roll of 156lb cold press should cost around $220 - if it’s more than that, check blickart.com, as they will surely ship for no extra charge on a large purchase like this one.
ArtGraf pigmented tailor chalk by Viarco: amzn.to/3TtHpwz
Stabilo pencil, black: amzn.to/40cZjG8
Derwent watercolor pencils: amzn.to/3jSau7K
I really like sketching with Derwent watercolor pencils. I also use, at times, a very soft lead pencil: 6B.
Derwent colored pencils: amzn.to/3FApe2K
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my iphone: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my iPhone 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE

I loved your thoughts about not being able say what your thought process was and why you did a certain thing. Even when I'm not painting but just thinking I sometimes get asked "What were you just thinking about?" I look at the person blankly for a bit and then shake my head. I was in my right brain and I just can't bring it over to the left brain to say what it was. I just stammer because words won't come. When I get pulled into the left brain like that I'm a bit disoriented but my left brain thinks it's weird. 🤪 So many people don't realize the great power of the right brain. I'm just so glad to get to go there and have fun. This painting is already so pretty.

I really like the area with the grasses meeting the dark of the cliff top and the little dotted marks.

How serendipitous, I recently ordered the black ArtGraf chalk after seeing Liz Ackerly use one in a video. :-) I like the marks you are able to make with the chalk and pencils - very organic and textural in keeping with the landscape that inspired the painting. If you enjoy flowing colors an artist that takes the technique to an amazing extreme is Lena Gemzoe. Thanks for sharing another wonderful creative session.

Peggy, thank you for another lovely comment! I just took a look at Lena Gemzoe making a HUGE painting of a tree by pouring - it looks like liquid watercolors - down the page. Wow, such great results she achieved with tools like a plastic card and a toothbrush!

Funny thing, I really liked starting this painting… but I have to admit I haven’t revisited it for a long time now.

@@klwebuga I just finished my first Coptic stitch sketch book. Used heavier Stathmore paper than I should have, but it still is useable. It was fun to make. I’ll do another sometime. Oh, by the way, Melanie Chadwick has more pencils than you do!

@@larrymisiak915 Yay! Your first coptic bound book! I hope you love it as much as I love my books. LOL about the pencils... 🙂

As usual, philosophically, you point out the divide between loyalty to the reference picture and the artist’s pull toward self reliance, only gained from confidence in one’s ability and a comfort with various media, a right brain, left brain tug of war, something I heard in a recent video about drawing, Betty Edwards was the speaker.

I made my comment before you actually got to the very point in this video!

For sure, and I have to say, this is such a thoughtful response. I think, for me, in my stage of studying art-making, I really try to break away from the image in front of me and try to imagine it as it *could* be.
