So glad you're back! I'm so happy all is well for you and your family, and congratulations to your son and to you! The books are stunning! You have changed my watercolor journey into absolute joy for me. You've taught me to allow the paint to do its thing, to flow and play across the paper. And that alone brings my heart so much happiness...

Hello Jean, I've just found your channel and it was perfect timing. I was so unhappy with everything I tried and was so frustrated last night that I put all my supplies away and vowed to find a new hobby. I am new to watercolor but not that new, 3 years. I just was so disappointed in everything I did. I came upon your doodle and warm up video from a couple years ago and the lightbulb came on! I LOVE your style, your doodle pages are my goal, LOL! I have subscribed and followed you on social media so I don't miss your wonderful art. I am feeling like trying again with more abandon and curiosity instead of trying to control it all. Thank you! :)

Can you share why you chose hot press instead of cold or not? Many thanks in advance! It was a lovely demo
@JeanLurssen Жыл бұрын
It's really personal choice. I use a lot of water and I find that the colors stay brighter on hot presses paper. When I paint on cold pressed paper the paints soak into the paper more and I sometimes have to end up doing a second layer. HOpe this helps.
@jacquelinemeloche93752 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. I really like the way you are painting . What kind of paper are you using?
@JeanLurssen2 жыл бұрын
I paint mostly on hot pressed paper because It suits my style of painting.

Welcome back and greetings from SA. Congrats on your published work! May I ask how your painting was selected by the book publishers ?
@JeanLurssen2 жыл бұрын
They wanted to use an abstract watercolor so my son mentioned that I was a watercolorist. I sent them a selection of paintings to choose from. Fortunately they liked one on mine.

Many thanks for sharing this. Just out of curiosity, what is the largest size abstract landscape you paint? I quite enjoy experimenting on small pieces of paper, usually an eighth of an imperial sheet or smaller, but was wondering what extra challenges are involved in scaling up and how large it is actually possible to go.
@JeanLurssen2 жыл бұрын
When I first started painting I did mostly 5" x 7" paintings. I was afraid to go bigger. After taking lessons I graduated to painting on quarter sheet, which I still use for most of my paintings today. I have painted a few watercolors on a full sheet but think that watercolors, which get framed behind glass, look better in smaller sizes. Just my opinion.

Glad you are back with demos. Your style and color combinations are fabulous. How do you decide between hot press versus cold press paper? Do you prefer hot press in your abstracts? Is it because the paint stays on top of the paper a bit longer ? Thank you .
@JeanLurssen2 жыл бұрын
I find the colors stay more vibrant on hot pressed paper and it suits my style of painting more. I do sometimes use cold pressed.

Thank you Jean. The color vibrancy makes sense similar to painting on Yupo. I recently played with heavy weight gloss photo paper for watercolor cards in a loose style- very interesting paper with the colors sitting on top for a bit.
