Anastasia Mily - Watercolour Art

Күн бұрын

Watch me paint this loose and easy semi-abstract watercolour landscape. I am using two colours, lots of different shaped brushes and various techniques to create texture that adds depth and interest to a simple composition.
Materials used:
PAINTS:
Payne's Grey (Rockwell Canada)
Burnt Sienna (Rockwell Canada)
PAPER:
Baohong "Academy" 100% cotton 300 gsm cold press 18 x 26 cm (7 x 10 in) block
BRUSHES:
Art Basics Squirrell Oval Wash Size 8
Princeton Select Script Liner Size 1
Panart 1102 Round Size 0
Black Silver by Dynasty Rigger Size 4
NEEF Thomas W Shaller Mop Size 3/0
NEEF Alvaro Castagnet Needle Point Size 6
Princeton Neptune Dagger Size 3/8
NEEF Goat Hake Size 30mm
And a random brush with a bamboo handle that I have no idea where it came from...
OTHER MATERIALS:
spray bottle
pencil
eraser
towel

@@AnastasiaMily very much so! As it is, I am trying to put together my pallet of colors. I have watched many of your videos and grabbed the colors that stand out to me the most. Could you recommend 5-10 or so essential colors to begin with? I enjoy using a limited pallet like so many of your pieces.
@AnastasiaMily
@AnastasiaMily 13 күн бұрын
A good selection of yellows, browns, blues, and greens would work well as a starter palette for landscapes. My mostly used colours are: Raw Sienna Light, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Sepia, French Ultramarine, Indigo, Payne's Grey, Perylene Green, Olive Green. Also Lemon Yellow, Indian Yellow, Phthalo Blue, and Lavender.

I really must try this. Early on when the paint ran down, leaving long gravestone? shapes.....I thought these looked a little like standing stones. Reminded me of an ancient stone circle with the high ground above. I'll try this when I can, maybe adding a textured wash to the ' stones'. Evoking a scene long ago where people would gather for ceremonies. Well......that's my imagination running wild. 😀

Thank you so much 😊 That item has a funny backstory as it was part of the packaging our new washing machine came with :) I looked at it and thought it was perfect for my studio! But a similar support can be easily made by folding rigid cardboard into a prism shape and taping it together.

Where do you buy the Rockwell watercolours from? Fabulous granulation and I know that Angela Fehr uses Rockwell paints.
@AnastasiaMily
@AnastasiaMily Жыл бұрын
Hi Julie, I got the paints directly from Rockwell (they kindly sent me some paint to test last year, and I really like some of those paints!). I believe you can buy from their website, and they are based in Canada. They list all the pigments in the description of each paint, and it is worth researching those pigments before buying as some are not lightfast. Art Spectrum's Payne's Grey is very similar to Rockwell's.

Do you think I could use Daniel Smith’s paint sticks instead of fresh paint from a tube? Have you tried one? I’m wondering how the paint will move on the paper once you add the water. Thank you.
@AnastasiaMily
@AnastasiaMily Жыл бұрын
I’ve never tried the sticks, but I am intrigued by the idea of them. I believe the sticks would behave differently to freshly squeezed paint, as I think the concentration of pigment is much higher in the tube… so the colours would not flow that freely when water is added. But since I haven’t tried the sticks, I can’t be 100% sure 😁

@suzilici
@suzilici 11 ай бұрын
Just a suggestion: instead of writing text in there, it would probably be better if you'd talk, because that way we can actually focus on what you are doing while listening to what you are saying. I have to press stop every time some writing appears on screen and I completely lose focus on what you are actually doing in the video. Quite frustrating also if instead of watching a 15min long video it becomes a 30min video if I have to pause every time to read what is written in there.

Dear Su, Thank you for watching and for taking time to leave your feedback. There are multiple reasons (I won't go into details) why the current format is the only way I can present my videos in at the moment. It is either text over video or no videos to show my viewers at all. I am not saying I will never do voiceover videos but for now this is how my videos going to look like. There are many wonderful artists on this platform who very generously share their knowledge with the world in the way it works for them - voice or no voice. Maybe those artists' channels would be a better fit? I hope you have a lovely day.

I love that Payne’s Grey, it is such a strong colour. I agree, these loose landscapes are such incredible fun to create ✨

I found you on instagram yesterday and this is the first of your videos I’m watching. I can honestly say I think I have learned more from this one video here than I have in the last month watching tutorials. Thank you!

Wow. Um, my only 'disappointment' is when you added those trees in front of the big 'sublime' trees. That tree (the leafs make them look as one), the way you achieved that 'ethereal' feeling in it with that touch of sun reflection or whatever (evidently I'm neither an artist or art critic): I was mesmerized by it. See it at 7:08 BEFORE you added the other trees. You practiced MAGIC there: How the heck could you visualize that touch! Anyways, beautiful work; I will have to be contented with going back to 7:08 to stay in that 'mystical' mood. 😇

Thank you for this - I am always curious how my work is perceived by the viewer, so reading about how you responded to the process was fascinating. The play of the warm and the cool colours produces atmospheric results and also an illusion of light. Just the two colours, the warm and the cool, combined together here created that magic 😊 Thank you again for sharing your thoughts!

Of course - I always recommend using 100% cotton paper for best results. There are three types of surface in watercolour paper - hot press (smooth), cold press (slightly textured), and rough (heavily textured). I prefer cold press but I paint on hot press and rough too. If you are located in Italy there is a brand called Fabriano, they make amazing watercolour papers (and having been making paper for the last eight centuries…).

Lovely painting,I have to watch it again to see where these trees at the left came from. (I mean the soft impressions ) . My volume was low and I heard the piano ,but that other sound ,I was under the impression that some electrical device was going to catch fire😀...

Allo Anastasia, I love this loose watercolor landscape :) and very much appreciate that we have a look on your colours palette on the right side. It is very useful to be able to see the paint consistency ect..... I would love to see more of this in your futur tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us...... :))🥰

Thank you for watching, and for your kind words 😊 And for the feedback! With my current setup it is challenging to include my regularly used large palette but I can do it for the paintings where I use two or three colours only.
