Acrylic isn't meant to be used on paper. It's meant specifically for either cloth canvas or wood (for toll painting). Some use it on metal surfaces, though it scratches off pretty easy. Anyway, paper soaks in what little moisture there is in acrylic, and that's what makes it rougher. Properly treated canvas or other non-porous surfaces make all the difference because they won't soak in that moisture content (unless it's a cardboard-canvas, of course).

I might try to prep the paper with Gesso next time :) I've used acrylics on my wall and on canvas before.
@justrosy5
@justrosy5 2 жыл бұрын
@@VisualMind The gesso would only bend the paper, because of the moisture in the gesso (which is a low content, but still present). You'd need to use both a spray adhesive on the backside of the paper, and some tape over the edges, and adhere the paper to a solid, flat, smooth surface (something that will let you peel the tape and the paper off after everything is dry). I guess my point here is that different mediums are made for different surfaces, so using the same surface for all the mediums isn't going to work out very well. It would be helpful to see each medium used on the surface it was most intended for (or at least that most artists will use it on), but with the same scene each time. While art is all about mixing and matching things, when testing the quality of the medium, it's not going to work as well as it could if it's applied to a surface that it wasn't really meant for. Hope that makes sense!

I like gauche to add to a watercolor painting especially if I goof up and need a bit of white or another light color. What I hate is it acts like concrete on the pallet. I have a bit that is so stuck to one pallet I just end up adding another watercolor over it as it seems to have permanently attached to the pallet reducing one well of the pallet.

That was so informative, thank you so much! I always used acrylics, never gouache, and never heard about acrylic gouache! Now I would like to try gouache because I prefer matte finish, want to blend easily, and is quite uncomfortable the fact that acrylics get dry on the palette (you just avoid that putting in a box some wet towel paper and on the top baking paper which will be the palette and then you close it very well ((yes, quite annoying)). I just have two questions for gouache colors: how long they stay wet on the palette? And how long they take to dry on paper? Anyway, to avoid they transfer on the other page, what if you just put a layer of white acrylic paint on the bottom?
@VisualMind
@VisualMind 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome :) I'd say depending on the brand they take something like 24 hours to more or less completely dry on the palette - coming out of the tube. If you rewet them a bit, that's dry again after a few hours. You can rewet them again and again. (As long as it's water soluble gouache) On paper they dry quicker or slower depending on the amount of water you use. I'd say it's somewhere in the middle of watercolors and acrylics. I never do anything to avoid transfer because I'm not so precious about my pieces to be honest 😅 But I've never had major issues with that. Water soluble gouache doesn't really work on top of acrylic paint, it doesn't really stick to it well.

You're welcome! You can also get some watercolor techniques with it that are harder to achieve with acrylic paint. I find that acrylic gouache is generally a bit smoother and the end result looks soft like a regular gouache painting. It also works really well on paper whereas acrylic paint is more meant for canvas :)

@@VisualMind Depends on how thickly or thinly you apply it with the medium. I use the Golden Wetting Agent, and sometimes it makes it almost like a gouache consistency. It still dries permanent like acrylic, but there's a bit more wiggle room with how you can apply the paint.

Poor acrylics. You can't use high quality gouache and watercolor and acryla gouache and then pull out staedler student grade acrylics. It's like comparing the performance of a Fiat punto with a Ferrari and saying the Fiat doesn't go fast like a Ferrari so it's a fail.
