That value strip trick is eye-opening! I might try that down the line as I find myself often trapped in painting in middle values, as you mentioned. Thank you for sharing your wonderful knowledge :)

Thank you so much!! You are a seriously good teacher!! It was extremely helpful to watch you go through this process. As an off again on again beginner, one of the things confusing me is that I want to learn what you have done here, paint something right up against a darker background of a completely different color which needs a definitive edge. I was not seeing any videos like that during a previous foray into watercolor, so very excited to find your channel. Hope you are well and thanks again.

Love your videos! I'm a beginner and wondering about how to store unframed watercolor paintings. Haven't been able to find much info online, in case you're interested in addressing this in a video. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge in such a relaxed, informative way!

Hi Gina, I am glad my video was helpful. Good question - I store my watercolors in a flat file (mine is a big metal one). You can also store them flat in a box or a drawer. I will have to do a quick video about this.

Thank you so much for the great tips. I started watercolors recently and most of the issues I’ve had, you covered and explained in this video. Thank you so much. I’d love to learn how your paper stays so flat (I’m assuming it’s the quality). Also, in your large watercolor (top right) how you blended the water across the entire painting so evenly and kept the detail. Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Jennifer. I use 140lb watercolor paper, usually cold press from Arches or Fabriano. It is 100% cotton. I stretch my paper to help it stay flat while painting. I have a video that shows how I stretch my paper. Here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXTUn6ugrpqhY7s On the painting I believe you are talking about the water area. I used a wet on wet technique to blend the colors. I may have gone over the water with several layers after each had dried to adjust the shapes and colors. I would reapply the clear water before painting the next layer of color.

This is super helpful. Thanks Lorraine. I liked seeing the difference with the water. A question-the painting on the left, now that it has colors over the grey, how would you continue to get the correct value while keeping colors and not getting a dull, muddy look? Thx.

Sue, I would use the same green blue mix over the previous layers if I needed to get the water darker. As long as the mix is the same, the colors on the painting won't be dull or muddy. I can adjust the colors in a successive layer, but colors that have purple or red in them could change the green and mute it. I hope this helps.

These tips are very helpful, especially the method of applying the mix over wet paper and the next layer over dry vs re-wetted. I'm going to make an exercise of this with notes in my journal. Identification of the value with the scale is really helpful. Color can play tricks on my eyes when determining value. In my opinion, I really like seeing the palette as well as the painting, which is very helpful to see the mixing process, wetness and quantity of mix. This is often missed with other artists' on-line videos. I am watching on a tablet, and it would be more difficult on a cell phone. I had a quick question: why your choice of Holbein over Daniel Smith foe Aureolean Yellow? I have the aniel Smith version, am I missing something? Thank you!

Beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and wisdom. However I’m having a problem with the two cameras. It would be more helpful if you could get the actual painting a little bit closer. Also, unless you are using your entire palette we may not need to see the whole pallet while you are painting, which could provide more room for a closer shot. Thank you again for your wonderful experience and willingness to share it all with us!!

Hi Thanks for the feedback. I am still working on my video set up. I have heard from others that like both angles. I am waiting for some other gear to arrive and then I will be trying my better DSLR camera to produce the videos.
