The bravery with which you splash on those big bold shapes of colour amazes me. I understand all the detail that you do, the fine strokes, the figures, the white highlight, but those washes you so airily start with-- I just keep watching again and again and my mind is in a cramp trying to translate what I see into something I can mimic. But it just eludes me. I am in awe of your loose brush handling, the apparent ease, the muted colours, and the vague shapes that add up to a lot more the sum of its constituent parts. Please post more.

Zarbo - thank you for your comments. Best not to overthink things, rather take on board the idea and - most importantly - practice. You don’t need to paint anything specific, just throw paint and water around on scrap paper to see what it does! You’ll very soon get a feel for what will happen. Be prepared to mess up (I do it frequently); making mistakes is not just inevitable, it’s essential if you’re going to progress. Learn from the mistakes! I will post more, but not sure when...

Thank you Keith for the demonstration. It helps me so much to be able to see the process of the full painting and understand the various layers that go down first. Then when the detail goes in surprise and the painting is finished. Good to see you using an ordinary decorators brush and still get the results. Hope to see many more videos by you . Thank you again. Joan Storer.

Thank you Joan. The cheap brush was to prove a point; we can so easily get hung up on choosing the right brushes, colour palette, paper etc. in a search for that magic secret ingredient. The magic is in you!

Love your demo's but I love the portrait on the left, hope a demo of this in the future.

+Rose Murphy - thank you. The portrait is just a sketch from my life class - I do it for fun and to ring the changes. I don't know if I'd be able to do a portrait demo; my studio isn't big enough for two people! But food for thought - I'll work on it.

Really do love your style. You show that loose painting is fun and even more impressive to me than these photo realistic paintings. Desperately waiting for more videos from you!

Oh, to see and paint even close to this. How do you suggest someone move towards this loose style? Are there instructional videos?
@HornblowerArt5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lee. It takes real effort (surprisingly), especially for an illustrator like me! As I said to Zarbo, I recommend playing around on scrap paper, trying techniques and colour combinations. BIG brush, lots of water and pigment. If you want videos, there are thousands out there! But if you really want to paint loose, look up Alvaro Castagnet.
