Have you got tubes of paint sitting unused in your studio? Have you made a chart like this? Maybe you have a better way of doing it, why not let us know by leaving a comment.

I have not come that far on my WC journey. About a year ago I decided to give this medium a go, and bought a Sonnet 24 pan set. Not bad to try out, but I think it is getting time to upgrade to artist' quality (also because the bottom of some pans start to show). That's quite a pile of tubes! (Yes I am a bit jealous 😁)

@@edzejandehaan9265 thanks for the comment. I understand that sonnet colours are not too bad (from what I have seen on YT) what you could do is when your pans get empty you can top them up with tubes of colour. That means you dont have to go to the intial expense of buying a new full set of artists quality paints, you can just change over a period of time. Once in the pans the tube colours will harden a bit . I do this in my field box.

I like trying out watercolor brands but as a beginner I stay with the "affordable" student grade paints. I'm learning, right? That's what student grade paints are for. 😂 And I always do swatches and try to compare the different brands. I have a dedicated swatchbook for them. 😎

Hi, Andy! Do keep these videos coming. I love watercolour swatching videos and watercolour brush and paper videos. They are very informative.

I started in water colors about 6 months ago and I'm obsessed with color! I've been a lover of color forever. I'm a professional jewelry designer by trade and have every gemstone known to man on display right above my water color area. Its so fun to just play with paints...mixing this and that and see what develops. One of my favorite colors is Winsor Newton paynes grey. I mixed it wit Qors cobalt teal and was shocked at the color. I think I have 5 different sets of water colors now. More than I'll probably use in my lifetime. I could watch these swathing videos all day!

Thanks Andy. I'm sure lots of people will find this interesting, including me. I have my palette of colours that I use regularly, but friends/relatives often give me new ones as presents. The first thing I do is make a swatch chart like yours so I can see what types of subject they might be useful for. All the best.

Thanks for taking time to comment Ray. Yes, they do come in handy for comparing colours. I have a feeling that I have one or two other tubes in the corners of drawers etc so it is handy that I left a few spare places for new colours. :)

I thought that you worked from the right with your popular colour because you are left handed.......await with interest why that may or may not be so. Thanks for another insight into your world Andy.
@AndyBeckTeesdale
@AndyBeckTeesdale 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Graham. Being left handed wasn't the reason that I placed my popular colours over on the right but it is true now that I come to think of it that I do tend to work from right to left as I can see what I have done without my hand being in the way. :)

Thanks for the great video Andy. While I think it's good to stick with the same colors, and learn them inside out, it's also great to change things up a bit every once in a while.

I think it is important to actually see the colors that I have, since hues carry between brands. I make a chart for all my pallettes. They are arranged in the same order as my half pans. Then mark the color and the pigment number. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the comment Terry. Maybe I am just odd but I tend to use the same selection of about 12 colours across all my palettes. Good idea about the colour and pigment number. As a mater of interest what is you main brand of paints?

@@AndyBeckTeesdale I have Mission Gold by Mijello. They are considered an artist grade set. I went a bit crazy and got the 36 color set - they were on sale. I definitely do not need all these colors, but as I use them, I'll start weeding them out.

Thank you Thomas. As tempting as it is I tend not to keep adding colours to my pot, when I am in an artshop I just recall that pot of unsused tubes on my shelf lol. My next film will be about my day to day palette.
