There seems to be something about the nature of watercolor that creates problems for you and then generously rewards you when you take the time to solve them. Glad to come across this excellent tutorial -I've been wondering about pencil lines for a while. Many thanks!

There is certainly an element of problem-solving in watercolour - the good news is that there is always more than one way to solve an issue. What matters is that you find a solution that works for you... I'm pleased you enjoyed the video - thank you for the great comment!

That was really useful; I have always relied on my pencil drawing to give definition, but now I will try and use tone and shape in my watercolour to give definition. Thankyou.

Thanks Ranjana - I'm pleased you enjoyed it. As for the palettes; I'm afraid I've had mine for many years and cannot get identical replacements from anywhere (similar, but not the same).

Hello would it work whit gouache paint too? Please let me know. I hope you are doing well. Thank you for showing us how to do it. 😃👍🏼👋🏼
@peterwoolleyartist4 жыл бұрын
I don't see why not, providing the gouache doesn't 'lock-in' the graphite. It's more a question of whether the painting looks better with the pencil lines, or without...

thank you very much for your explanation! as a beginner, i am currently struggling with the dents my pencil lines left in the paper - is there any way to fix that? in my example i scribbled a tentacle which i had to correct a couple of times, and now after it's colored, you still see the creases the pencil left in the paper... is there a fix to this?
@peterwoolleyartist2 жыл бұрын
There are two easy solutions to this... Either draw with less pressure on the pencil (which is indenting the paper's surface), or switch to a softer grade. I use a 2B pencil which, if used carefully, will not indent the paper.

instead of pencil use derwent intense nuetral grey when wet then dry this blends into the background you still have your guide lines as they are less obvious you can focus on your water colour tones
@geraldeneirisgussin59296 жыл бұрын
What brand of paint do you use?
@peterwoolleyartist6 жыл бұрын
I use a mixture of Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith and SAA Artist colours (in tubes)
@andymandyandsheba457110 жыл бұрын
is it wet on wet or wet on dry that you are doing
@peterwoolleyartist10 жыл бұрын
The background is wet-in-wet, everything else is built-up wet-on-dry.
@saltburnsam4 жыл бұрын
lost and found is also quite interesting so distinct definition is not a major thing but certainly more a matter of taste , personally the less pencil the better
