Watercolour Tutorial Autumn Trees

A loose watercolour tutorial by Adrian Homersham. This demonstration uses wet into wet techniques to create a loose expressive autumn landscape.

Brushes
Hake Brush
This is a goat haired brush that has been used for centuries in both China and Japan. It is very versatile and can be used to apply large washes of pigment and to create loose textured areas; a great for loose wet into wet watercolours. The ones I use are Pro Arte Ron Ranson branded brushes. I find these shed hairs far less than cheaper alternatives. It’s useful to have these in a range of sizes and they can be purchased as a set of 4, please see link below:

Goat Haired Calligraphy Brush

Sword Liner Brush
I find the sword Liner a wonderful brush for creating expressive loose marks particularly when painting trees, grasses or shrubs. Made by Pro Arte they come in 3 sizes and can be either purchased as a set or individually.

Paint
I use a variety of paint brands including Daniel Smith and Windsor & Newton in both the Cotman and Artist’s range. The Cotman colours are very economic to purchase and are used by both students and professional artists including Sophie Knight RWS. Colours used Cotman Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Hue and Ultramarine; Windsor & Newton Artists Brown Madder (this could be substituted for Cotman Alizarin Crimson mixed with a little Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna).

Paper Fabriano Artistico The paper used for this demonstration was Fabriano Artistico EW 140lb NOT. This is a 100% cotton rag paper with a beautiful bright white surface that aids the creation of vibrant translucent watercolours.

Palette Manufactured by Stewart these are very light and strong.

I'm so glad you are back. Love this new tutorial. Is your Patreon up and running Adrian and if so, how often do you post tutorials on it? It is like magic happening - the way you paint - you use the brushes like magic wands casting a spell over the paper with every stroke. You have such a unique style of painting. It looks so loose yet you seem to paint in a very measured way. I just love it and would love to be able to learn to do something like that. It is not easy. I managed the 'Cow Parsley' but have been scared of everything else :-)
