Tbh, if they are so stupid to watercool (unneeded actually) a server in a rack and endanger the whole server rack with being flooded, they deserve it. well, if there are any spillage, it will probably damage the pcbs of the other components. and since linus' servers are basically constantly 24/7, a sudden failure of the raid controllers would at best, result in the loss of the raid controllers, and at worst, the corruption beyond restore of every file on the petabyte project. but at least if worsts comes to worsts, we will at least get all our data is gone pt2.

If you really wanted to cut leak risk down from fittings. You should have used Teflon tape on all the male threads. You never know when an o ring will go bad. If a fitting does loosen the seal stays, also it keeps fittings from wanting to unscrew.

For the love of God, Linus! Just stop!"
@TheAtqthe30th7 жыл бұрын
michael gregory Like honestly if I were Linus I would place the water-cooled render machine on the lowest point of the server rack and have a container in the bottom to stop any water from pooling on the floor. So that way if it leaks it won't damage any other machines in the rack

I could be wrong, but he might have been tapping (cutting new threads) in the holes so the screws would thread into the radiator brackets instead of going all the way through the radiator. If he had to reverse the drill out instead of just pulling it out, then that's probably what he was doing. If he just pulled it out then he must have been making the holes bigger for some reason.

The storage servers and batteries are on the bottom because they're the heaviest. Makes the server harder to knock over and all around more stable. Nothing to do with heat, and the distilled water would as UltimateBreloom said pick up ions and become conductive quickly. Distilled water is only somewhat safe during initial testing for leaks, not long term.

is it just me, or does this jank server completely negate the entire h.264 workflow they spent so long researching a couple years ago? ghe one with that dual xeon machine?

Kevin Lee James hmmmmm
@obvious_humor7 жыл бұрын
Kevin Lee James They didn't change the workflow, this is still the export server but they found that IPC was more important than threads, so they switched away from Xeons and Linus threw a spare 6950X into this one.

why not use mineral oil for the cooling loop instead of water so you have even more safety
@suicidalcupcake2227 жыл бұрын
because mineral oil has a lower thermal capacity and conducts heat much less effectively. It can also destroy the tubing...
@h79087 жыл бұрын
oh ok coz i know its not electrically conductive so for petabyte project underneath it would be a life saver if it leaked
@bmxriderforlife12347 жыл бұрын
because mineral oil is more viscus then water thus it would wear out the pump a lot faster as well as require a lot more effort to drain and flush the potential for mess is higher. also the results wouldnt be much different.
@suicidalcupcake2227 жыл бұрын
bmxriderforlife1234 yes the result would be very different

For what would they need more/bigger servers?
@Excludos7 жыл бұрын
Their servers handles all the rendering (and storage) of all their videos. More power = faster rendering = can put up videos faster and more often, not to mention all the manhours wasted waiting.

The concept of this video is right on par with your raid-0 server crash and shows you still don't understand servers. For those looking here for server guidance: Servers are meant to be reliable, long-lasting work horses, not overclocked and water cooled custom monstrosities (except for lab machines, then by all means). FYI, if you need a 2-U server with a lot of horse power, look at hyper-converged servers, I have some from hyper-grid (or nutanix, vblock, etc) that have 4 blades and 96TB of ssd storage in 2-U size.
