great job on everything my friend. Rice can be used the same way that the silica gel is used. It probably requires a greater volume of rice than the silica gel. To re-dry the rice you can put in a dehydrator, oven etc. I have never used rice this way but I do know that rice absorbs moisture very well. I learned that through the use of what my family calls "hot socks". If you are unfamiliar with this item you can do a web search for "rice sock warmer". They are wonderful items to use at home when one is chilly or to use on a sore muscle as a heating pad. Anyway when you heat these "hot socks" in the microwave to use them, there will be quite a bit of moisture left on the cooking surface when you pick up the sock. Also after using the sock and reheating it several times, it requires more and more time to heat the sock back up due to being dryer now. After the sock has sat unused for some time (days, weeks??) it will again microwave easily at the original shorter time due to absorbing moisture out of the air. Just thought you might enjoy learning how to use a commonly found item for your drying material for the charred items. That was a great idea you had.

+Far North Bushcraft And Survival Hi Lonnie, so glad you like it! Interesting with the rice. I have had rice in my salt to prevent the salt to stick together. I do have two "seed" pillows that I heat up in the micro oven. - Actually every night as its lovely to heat up my cold feet when I go to bed. And the other where ever I am cold. Its so relaxing. Once in a while I need to add moisture to the pillows, and that means that I have a microvawe-safe cup with little water in together with the pillow/pillows while heating it up. That way the steam from the boiled water will add enough moisture to the pillow and its good to go a while again. Thank you for your tip with the rice, and that you took your time to watch and to comment. Take care out there my friend. /Ulrica

Fantastic! Loved how you introduced and included your wonderfully carved bear! You are always so organized! I made a base out of aluminum to set my Kelly Kettle on so I would not have to worry about burning picnic tables. I used a piece 8 inches wide x 12 inches long and 1/8 inch thick, then bent the ends down 1-1/4 inches to provide an air-gap. It's light and works great. Wonderful location and lunch! So glad to see you are doing well after your surgery. Take care. Ossie

+Ossie Weinert Hi Ossie. So glad you liked how I tried to get the bear into the video. That aluminium base for the Kelly Kettle is an awesome idea. Now I was lucky to find that thick wooden piece, but it started to smoke real bad after a while so something else would be nice for next time. Thanks for the tip! I appreciate that you took your time to watch and to comment. Take care, you too, my friend. /Ulrica

This was so CUTE the way you started this!!! I was just thoroughly enchanted! OH!!! And the way you have the coloring on that little bear is so classy and fantastic. I think you think you can do those little bears because you watched the tutorial-----but no! You can do that because you are innately talented....! OH! And such great humor throughout. I think I love your vids because you are so very self-effacing and humble---but your humor is just so honest and great---like pulling out the flask, "JUST water...." I loved that. ....Finally, what great talent, too, in your woods skills--the fire, the ease with the cooking. AND AND AND, nearly forgot! What fantastic WALKING!! OH it is so incredibly grand to see you walking with such confidence and comfort. Oh I hope you feel as good as you look. that is so grand. (And good lord, you're sure testing it all by carryng your typically heavy pack you always carry! Tough old broad, as they say here in the USA!) Thanks so very much for making another goodie. It's always a nice surprise to see a new Gullrica video up. You've got to have the most contagious smile in all of KZbin. That bear carving was so good and it was fun how you kept him in the shots as you showed us your beautiful scenery. The bannock bowl was a real success and cooked perfectly. Bread bowls like that are really popular here, but we are lazy and use store bought ones. We start with a good sized bread bowl and then fill it up with tomato soup. As you eat the soup and munch on the top parts of the bowl, it also is soaking into the rest of the bowl. By the end, you have this amazing tomato soaked bread. It'll warm up any cold day. Thanks for sharing your time out with us. Has your surgery helped as much as you hoped it would? -Linda

Daww, that little bear is just soo cute. Well done!! I did worry about it somewhat, sitting so close to the fire. The moisture bags are a very good idea. We always save them, but never really do much with 'm. The bread bowl is definitely a great idea, mouthwatering! Looking at your fingers, that's nothing compared to me; I always struggle with the stickiness of the dough - one day, I won't add too much water and get it right :-)) Good to see you doing trips again, keep going! Cheers! -Bas

+Out and About West Hi there Bas, so glad you liked the bear. Many times it appear closer on the video then it is in real.. so I think the bear wasn´t really in any danger. He was just little cold and wanted to warm up his feet for a while. :) I bet you will be better in not getting sticky fingers then me one day! Thank you for taking your time to watch and to leave such a nice comment. Take care my friend. /Ulrica

That looked so good to eat. I brought everything to make a pizza while I was hiking in our state park . I found a flat rock about 8 inches round and put it in the fire and cooked it on the rock. I used some aluminum foil to cover it like a little oven and oh my it was so good. Why does everything taste better when cooked in the woods. Great job and really enjoyed your video. Thanks.

What a wonderful video, my friend! I love your beautifully carved bear! You did a fantastic job on him. I love the details. My daddy would have been very impressed with your carving talent. As I have mentioned before, he was also a woodcarver. I especially loved how you included the in the video. Very creative. The Kelley Kettle is so versatile! I must look into getting one for myself.

Nice to see you out and about! Love the bannock idea! I hope to be able to post some fishing videos in the ear future. The past few months flooded the area I had scouted for this year so I'll be scouting it again and hope my grandson's girlfriend is willing to help out with the filming. Wish me luck because I don't really have a personality on camera. LOLI also have a few knives I am working on for maybe a future showing on here. Being old sucks but it beats the alternatives I think.Thanks for your insights to things. I am a fan and am not going anywhere. Been waiting for you to get back 100% and I believe you're there.

See the camera as your friend, and talk to it like it was a person you know well that standing / sitting there. Study how other makes the video. Notice what you like and dont like, copy the way you like and avoid things you dont like to see in others videos. :) Oh well. Sorry, here I give advice you didnt ask for. Good luck with filming! Yep...you made me hungry once again! Very pretty spot too. I have to say, as a wood Carver of pipes and canes, your bear was assume! They are one of the hardest subjects to make come alive and you have succeeded! Very cool! Where I live here in Wisconsin we have used what we call bread bowls to put our dips and spreads in at party's, but we carved out the bowl from bread rolls that were ready made. Your bannock formed around a rock opens up unlimited possibilities for my bushcraft cooking. I was thinking of doing a version of yours using a cornbread bannock and filling it with bacon, eggs, veggies, and a drizzle of maple syrup!?! Yum! One more thing..I actually have been using those little dryer packets to put in my grass bundle bags, but to put them in my char clothe box is right on the money! I have been having problems with my char clothe getting unworkable after sitting in various cans and bags. Especially when we put in the effort and time to prep it! Thanks Again! John

Hey, Gullica my friend...one of my bushcrafter friends who is quite old, read our messages and e- mailed me. Didn't even know he was still with us! Yet, thanks to you we have united! He is almost 96 years old and had to comment on char clothe. Pretty cool! He said, and I have to share his knowledge! He charred his clothe in a tin box...then he would separate the clothe and let hang in the air...then, he would shave birch bark and cedar bark into a fine dust. He would then mix the dust and then carefully coat the char clothe...then, he would place the coated char clothe between dried birch bark and tie it tight with sinew. Place it in a leather pouch with some dried cattail fluff and charcoal dust. He said, he could be in the middle of a snow storm, rain storm, etc....it would stay dry and light in at least three strikes of what ever ignition source you had! I would not have even came close to thinking of that!!! Yet, I always listen to the few old timers we have left. Thanks to you Gullica, I have a little time left now, with an ancient bushcrafter that really loved the life! Well, anyways, I thought I would pass that on...as I will try that technique myself. I hope he has more to share!!!! And if he does....so will I!!!!!!

john- waxerone Wow, that´s amazing John, I am so glad you two got contact with each other again! And that knowledge with charred cloth is amazing too. very nice way to cook your bannock I am going to start to collect some stones to do that with my wood stove my wife is not a woods person but loved the idea for thick soups. They paint them like little bears and small birds and such very attractive . Very nice outing

Kuksabrot. Like the recipe for the bread, Ulrica, I'll have to look for the powdered egg and cream over here, and a nice way to cook it too. Butter is always a problem, there seems to be only 2 or 3 days in the summer when it is warm enough to spread, ha, ha. Your bear is lovely, very nicely carved, you are a natural artist, I think. A lovely vid in a lovely place, thank you for taking us along.
@Gullrica8 жыл бұрын
+Dale Skidmore Hi Dale, kuksabrot was a good name! Why didnt I come up with that :) When it came to the bannock recipie, I just throw in what I had, I didnt read or followed any recipie online. So you can make do without cream powder if you want. Butter is a challenge, yes. I have heard that in summer time it should be better to use Ghee as it can stand longer periods without cooling much better. But I dont really like the taste. And its more for frying, not to have on a sandwish.. So glad you liked my wooden bear! Thank you for taking your time to watch and to comment. Take care my friend.
@daleskidmore16858 жыл бұрын
Apparently Cream powder is coffee creamer over here, and Mrs Skidmore thinks egg powder is available too. I have a thing about butter ruining a slice of bread every time I try to spread it, so use margarine all the time. As for Kuksabrot, it is yours to use, you inspired me. I willl be using your recipe soon. Take care.
