The Golden Rey was in a perfect position and location to be parbuckled upright using spud cans and strand jacks, and then floated away intact. But instead, they chose the messiest, lengthiest, most expensive and most environmentally damaging method they could devise. This thing was a crime, but all participants walked away rich.

The ship didn't block the river enough to impede access to the port. Cargo ships had access to and from the port at all times. Also calling the port of Brunswick one of the busiest ports on the east coast is a bit of a stretch. It basically imports automobiles only and although it's a vital piece of the local and state economy it probably ranks pretty low down the list on busy ports by ship count.

It's incredibly hard for me to imagine how a crane like that can lift 7500 tons while it is floating even though it is mentioned it is anchored. I would love to learn how much the carbide chain cost, it must me monumental! The cars look like toy cars when they lift the sections. I recon it might be a bit out of scope, but I would love to see how they repair the carbide chain. I know weldings is stronger than the original material, just like bones are more resilient after healing, but carbide must be very special to weld.

i followed this in great detail at the time following Captain Andy on his channel, 'Menorcan Mullet' - it seems to me, humans just will not learn about these kinds of incidents, and to that matter, when they do happen are so ill equipped to deal with them efficiently and in their entirety causing one cockup after another - this report, good as it is paints a very positive picture mostly but gives little time on all the failures of which there were many, and more that i can think of if there was a much larger vessel able to deal with this (and include all manner of onboard facilities, hospital, firefighting, fuel off load, deploy its own flotilla of environmental boats to deal with different situations etc), it could be on scene in a day or two, and perhaps prevent the vessel from rolling over and spend the next three years dead in the water eating money - in my mind i can see many ways in which a vessel can be supported and refloated faster and safer and have less effect on the environment, all at a cost i will add (but not anything like the figure above) the money estimated above covers one incident and could be better invested in one or two specialized vessels to deal with these large ship accidents (including the MS Dali and Scott Key Bridge incident in Baltimore) action should be taken immediately and not wait for insurers, owners, authorities and all those involved in the recovery to make up their minds - i will of course add that the salvage teams do a fantastic job, its dangerous and much has to be considered before going in guns blazing, but there are better ways to deal with this - such as the way in which the Baltimore incident was handled, no more asking who does this and that, the president was right to get a military perspective on the situation and for them to lead the way, tell people what they are doing and when - you just cannot wait for people sat in offices twiddling their pens, get the right man on scene and deal with it $842,000,000 - put the 2,000,000 in my pocket and i'll show you how to do this

As a local I assure you this salvage operation was probably the most amateur and poorly conceived attempt at naval salvage so far this century. Nothing about it worked, and by the time the crane ship had just about figured out how to not constantly break itself they’d damaged the hull so badly that it was at constant risk of collapsing into a giant heap of scrap of oil in the shipping channel.

That's why everything cost more cuz we all have to pay for those lawyers and they're the ones who benefit not us. Just like on this KZbin channel you see ad after ad paid for by the bar association of the states telling you to sue somebody for a car accident you were in and you'll get $160,000 in 30 seconds. That's right, they claim 30 seconds. She'll get paid.
