all wars should be fought like this; uniforms and smoke, no one gets hurt and afterwards everyone has a beer together.

Me too, although I was on horse back most of my battle was with my mount. Wish it was shot from under me. Actually I would have done it myself if I wasn't shooting blanks that day! At least I had a grand view of the battle. Next time I think I will be a drummer boy, less danger of breaking my neck. Never found myself on the video, but sure brought back memories. 18:25 is a great example of the conditions that saw militaries of the day favouring colourful, highly visible uniforms. The smoke and haze are like soup. Easy to see how units could become hopelessly separated in the confusion of battle.

Well, you could also watch the movie "Waterloo" from 1970. Its very well made, but crippled by the cutter, because it was considered "too long" Christopher Plummer played the Duke of Wellington verry well and Napoleon Bonaparte was played by Rod Steiger. I can advise you to first read a book about what actual happned and when. The editor of this movie made it hard to understand what's happening, because they cut crucial scenes. 1. In 1815 Napoleon escapes from Elba, returns to France,the king flee, and Napoleon knows he will face all his enemies at once somewhere in Belgium if he doesn't act first. 2. In June 1815 Napoleon B. Decides to move his whole northern army secretly to Belgium. The British, Dutch and Prussian armies are gathered around Brussels, waitng for their Austrian an Russian allies to take on Napoleon. 3. On June 16, 1815 napoleon moves forward, splits his army in 2. Napoleon moves to the Prussians at Ligny on the right, Ney moves to the British and Dutch on the left near the town of Quatre-Bras ( 4-arms , a cross section where 4 important roads meet) 4. This night, Neys scouts meets elemetnts of the Dutch army, and report to Ney. Ney isn't sure... Is the whole British/Dutch army behind that ridge??? Or only small elements? Ok, it was only a handful of Dutch troops, but Ney decides to wait with the attack...until 10 that morning... 5. Napoleon just attacks the Prussians and nealy defeats them. He sends angry messages to Ney, like "What are you waiting for, you..%%#£@!!!". And Napoleon also orders a major part of Ney's army to come to Ligny... and never told Ney about that. 6. Ney attacks, missing a major part of his army, but now the British and Dutch are fully aware of the thread. The Duke of Wellington had a great party in Brussels that night, which was spoiled by the news of the French attack. The whole British army had to move from camps around Brussels to, well, Mont st. jean, near Waterloo. 7. At the end of june 16th, Ney didn't beat the Dutch and British troops at Quatre-Bras. Napoleon B. did defeat the Prussians at Ligny. But instead of fleeing, they retreat in good order. Napoleon send Marechal Grouchy to persue the Prussians and make sure they went back to Prussia. Now Napoleon an Ney go after the British and Dutch army. After a night with a severe rain and thunderstorm they met at the fields of Mont Saint Jean, near the town of Waterloo. The British/Dutch troops manned the high ground of the valley opposite to La Belle alliance. The Duke of Wellington surveyed this position a year before and was quiet fond of the defensive qualities of this ground. 8. Well, the rest is history. Napoleon attacks far to late, in order to let the mud dry a bit to get his artillery moved, the British stood their ground on that ridge,while the french launched insaine cavalry attacts over a far-too smal front. Then came the Prussians, they never fled back after their defeat, but instead moved to Waterloo, to aid the British/Dutch. The end... The conclusion: Both commanders made big mistakes. Napoleon just made more mistakes and was not saved by Prussians like Wellington. If Ney just attacked at Quatre-Bras on the night of 16 June, he ciuld have overrun the Dutch militia, there were only 3000 men holding the line. Plus 2 artillery batteries, no cavaly, the British were back in Brussels, having a party. Napoleon lost the war and at Quatre-Bras, not at Waterloo. Ps. I'm a history amateur, and former reenactor and member of the NCV, as the 14th cuirassier. I hope you enjoy my comment.

great shooting :-) What you can't see is how difficult it was /is to walk through the field. It's 1m high and very dusty. Another thing that struck me was the noise that this small "Battle" was making. Made me wonder how loud it must have been in the real battle.

Yeah and considering its quite a few acres of wheat in a generally small-farm area. Think it was very good of the farmer to let them all walk all over it for the weekend! Kind of true to the original battle I suppose, although the crops are much smaller

@iansnook1038
@iansnook1038 3 жыл бұрын
Short answer, you don’t know. It all depends on the narrative that you’re trying to portray. In a close engagement you may be told by a senior rank to take some casualties so the front rank my drop or it may be a case if you’re feeling tired, twisted an ankle or your musket is not firing you’ll make a decision to become a casualty (always drop onto your front so that you can keep a sneaky eye on the action, much harder on your back, lol) Because Waterloo was such a big event over quite a large battleground nobody wanted to get separated from the regiment and then spend the rest of the battle trying to rejoin them.
