Good job guys. Astute of you to identify that the air intake to the heater was making the noise, the same happens on inlets to the engine (which are silenced by careful airbox design), not that 99% of people know. Another good tip is to mount things like pumps (air or fuel) onto rubber bobbins, this helps isolate them from the chassis (which would transmit the noise more).

Cheers, yeah we were surprised how much difference it made for such a simple and cheap addition, a big win! The fuel pump is mounted with the rubber spacer that came with it so it's not directly against the chassis, and that's mounted onto a block of wood. But the ticking still resonates and you can hear it fairly clearly, although it doesn't really bother us too much. We might try to quieten it down a bit but not eliminate it as the sound of it going is quite reassuring and we've got so used to it now we sort of like it 😛

Great work! How big is your water tank? How many five minute showers can you get out of it? Does the water recirculation occur for the five minute shower water or for the whole tank? What is the concept of shower recirculation? Sorry about all the questions! I am just a very curious little bee!

​@@marshmellow989 cheers! 🙂 And no worries! So we have an 85l fresh water tank and a separate 18l hot water tank for the shower. If we're using it as a standard shower it goes down quickly, as our pump delivers ~2.5l a minute so for a high pressure 5 minute shower you would use most of the shower tank (~12.5l). So the way we designed the system was to save how much water we need while stile having a nice shower. What we usually do is a military style shower first using minimal water, which is ~2.5l each and that allows us to clean off any dirt, use shampoos and shower gels etc, and that all drains normally through the drain and out to the waste water tank under the van. Then we turn on the recirculating part (there is a switch outside the shower) which closes a valve to the tank and turns on a pump which pulls the water back out the drain and puts it through a number of filters before it goes back into tank, so it forms a closed loop. Then we can enjoy a hot rinse for as long as we want without using any more water. Then after a few showers we drain all the shower tank water into the waste tank and refill it from the fresh. That's pretty much the gist of it, we'll release a video on it at some point but it won't be for a little while. It's not maintenance free either as there are filters that need cleaning/changing from time to time and it obviously adds a bit of complexity, but it works well for us! 😀

Maybe a roller works better, but certainly doing more coats is worth it. I sealed a deck with similar membrane and a roller worked well. I still used a brush on inside corner edges though.

Yeah would be interesting to try with a roller actually, we just used what came with the kit. Is quite tricky to get a flat finish with just a brush so not a bad shout to give that a try 👍

Hmm yeah the shower in general was something we were not looking forward to and definitely put off for a while as we knew it was going to be a big project, but this part of it was quite nice actually as it was just following instructions on a kit for once! We find all the thinking and planning and building for all the shapes and curves of the van to be the most tiring mentally, some days it feels like you make barely any progress (or go backwards 😅). It was pretty satisfying to do the water test at the end of this one 😛

Hiya, happy to say absolutely no issues so far with many showers in that time! We'd definitely go down the same route if we were building another van too as having to conform everything to the limited sizes/shapes of trays was too limiting for the layout we wanted. And we don't have to worry about the often tacky motorhome trays cracking or yellowing either 👍

We're going to put in a sliding door with a small airgap at the top, and then we'll have the heater blowing warm dry air in to the bottom of the shower. So hopefully it will create good airflow to remove the moisture and then dry out the shower room afterwards

Cheers! And yeah we've given it quite a bit of thought. What we're doing it putting in a sliding door that stops a few cm's short of the top of the shower so there's a decent air gap, and then we have the maxxfan right outside which we'll have on while the shower is in use. Then when the diesel heater is on it will push dry warm air into the bottom of the shower and then be pulled out the top by the fan, so hopefully making a decent flow. There will also be a small fan inside the air pipe for the toilet we're putting in too. We think all that together should allow for some decent ventilation, but if when we stress test it we need something else, we'll add an extra fan/vent at the top of the shower 👍

And we're going to be using a Bobil heat exchanger that uses the energy from the diesel heater to heat the water in a separate 18l tank, which should be able to get it to 40C in around 10-12 minutes. We have the kit already so hopefully not too long till we can get it all in! 🙂

Van is coming along great! I've just binged most of your videos over the past few days and am looking forward to seeing the final product. On a side note - how do you find the extended van to drive? Currently deciding on what van to pick (I'm 193cm and would need a lengthwise bed + height of a transit) so sort of torn between the LWB and LWB extended (jumbo). Do you find the back scraping on hills/ swinging into traffic on narrow roads? Living in NZ with its hilly geography and narrow roads that would be a bit of a dealbreaker for me unfortunately - but seeing you guys happy with yours gives me a bit of hope haha.

Thanks a lot! 🙂 Yeah it's starting to take shape a bit more now, we're hoping we've done most of the bigger projects! And we find the van absolutely fine to drive, more comfortable than being in our car. We drove it 13 hours up to Scotland and it didn't feel that long at all. Where we are is lots of narrow country lanes, potholes and hills but we've never had a problem with the length. It's a bit interesting sometimes on a single track lane when another vehicle comes the other way and you have to reverse though! The only times we really notice the size is in busy urban areas, especially trying to park. Supermarkets and things round here aren't really designed to accommodate a 7m van, so we often drive around for a bit trying to find somewhere suitable 😛 We spent a few weeks in NZ on the South island in a motorhome, absolutely loved it there! You have some stunning scenery, hope to be back one day 😊

That seems to be a good sweet spot as we can feel the magnetic force through the van even through our composite floor with all the insulation in, but not so strong so that we can remove them from the underside easily. Hiya! Yeah we had similar concerns about water backing up in the ducting but having done it now, we're not too worried. We've thought about the design to minimise the chance of any water getting into the ducting. So the air vent has a hood on it, and is on the same wall as the shower so the water is spraying away from it. We've also tried to angle the ducting downwards, and it's corrugated so any splashes that did get inside wouldn't get very far. You would have to have a large amount of standing water or deliberately point the shower into it for water to travel further down it. But even then, it probably wouldn't get past the heat exchanger we're using as that forms a low point, and there's also hot air being blown through it all the time. So we're fairly confident the way we have it set up is fine. Looking forward to being able to extensively test it when the recirculating part of the shower is hooked up 🙂

Very well! The shower room has stayed completely watertight which is great so we'd definitely use the same tanking kit and sliding door we have now. And the recirculating part is working great too. The one things we'd change is on the drainage side of things, as at the moment we have to be quite particular with how we park to have it work properly. We did try to slope the sides into the drain but we'd probably accentuate that a little more by making some slightly angled wedges that point into the drain before doing the tanking layer. We'd also put in a slightly larger waste tank and lower it a little to increase the drop under the van too (we'll probably do that at some point anyway). Not big issues right now and we use the shower all the time, but would definitely make it better 👍

Can I please ask how you're going to get the used shower water back inside the van for filtration and re-circulation? It looks to me as though your drain pipe is going to need to be routed straight back in and up the back wall into the filters via a sump? I'm currently converting a sprinter and trying to figure out how to do this without cutting two unnecessary holes in the floor!

Sure, so we have another pump that sucks it back out the shower drain and brings it back into the van to the right of the shower into the bottom of our bench seat, where it then is pushed through all the filters. We wanted to keep the number of holes down to a minimum too so what we've done is put the pipe back up through the pipe that the toilet fan vents air out of. It's been working great so far, just taking some experimentation with different starting temperatures and how to use it most efficiently 🙂👍

No daft questions! 🙂 It's got a flexible butyl tape layer which goes over all of the joins and corners to provide the first layer of waterproofing before the membrane goes on. All the seams are the most likely places for any leaks so you put it anywhere there is a join and it should move and flex with the van as it's moving 👍

The hold force is strongest when they're flat upright against a surface, so we take them off by pivoting them on an angle first. (No liability taken if you get a magnet stuck on your van that you can't remove 😁)

@@sethgold6950 Ah k, we don't know in isolation as we built it piece be piece inside the van for that one. And between the weighbridge visits we had added more than just the shower so hard to pick out just that on its own. We used the leftover van wall ply which was only 5mm to keep the weight down there, and the pvc and reco tiles are nice and light. We did end up using a little more wood for battening though than we'd have liked as using our plywood offcuts meant we had a lot more joins that needed supporting. Think if we were doing it again we'd probably size the wood down on the supporting rails from 2x2 to 2x1 and use bigger pieces of ply, but we wanted to use up everything we had left instead of buying more wood

Hmm we found the tanking kit really easy to use to be honest, the tape is a little fiddly at first but other than that it just paints on. Probably one of the easiest jobs we've done in the van which was nice! It did take a while to complete each step but a lot of that was just drying time. Never used fiberglass before so would be interesting to try it out sometime, but can't really see it being easier for us as we'd need to apply the resin and cut the matting around and into all the awkward shapes of our shower. Cost wise there only seems to be a penny in it between the large tanking kit we bought and a similar sized fiberglass kit, although we did need some extra tape 😛

It's pretty strong, in part because we wanted to use up all of the plywood scraps we had leftover from the van walls to save buying any more, so needed more cross-members to support them on the edges. We might shave off some weight later on by carving some material out of some of those, we'll see

no such thing as comp toilet in a van, it takes 3months for number 2s to breakdown thats a lot of 2s

Yeah generally for most people although depends on how/where you dispose of it, but that's what they call them. We consider it more of a waterless, separating toilet and way nicer to deal with than a chemical one 👍
