Hi. Just as a clarification, WEDI and other Products like it are not waterproof on the surface. The closed cell foam structure is what gives the panel it's waterproofing. So when applying the sealant it is important to seal to the foam core and not just on the surface.
@never2be074 жыл бұрын
Commies Suck what do you mean seal to the foam core???
@ameyers674 жыл бұрын
@@never2be07 the facer is not waterproof. Only the core is waterproof.

I have been in the caulking and waterproofing trade for over 40 years and when I saw the flange stopped short of the edge of the tub I just knew you were going to make the mistake that 90% of people make and leave a huge hole at the outside edge of the the tub, because they stop the waterproofing at the edge of the tub. But you didn’t you went back and fixed it. Well done. Every “professional” tub installer needs to watch this video.( I normally get called in after the fact to try to repair the botched installation and I can’t tell you how many times I have found the tile at the narrow strip at the front of the tub without waterproofing or sometimes just drywall at that strip) I also applaud your numerous references to technical manuals. There are so many “experts” on KZbin that have never read the tech manual for the product they are using. Or they are just so ignorant that they think they know more than the manufacturer. Especially when it comes to sealants and waterproofing. The morons that advocate using soapy water or even window cleaner to tool sealants make my blood boil. Sorry for the rant. Keep educating people on the CORRECT techniques and details.👍
@ashleywilkes7632 Жыл бұрын
So… say a person did that - stopped the wedi at the flange and tiled so there’s a gap. What would a person do there? Are they screwed?
@genecarden780 Жыл бұрын
@@ashleywilkes7632 yes they are. Short of tearing everything out and fixing it properly, you can caulk the tile to tub properly, seal the grout and hope for the best. But I have never seen a KZbin video of caulking the perimeter of the tub that was done properly. Having said that it is possible that the water never gets beyond the finishes on the walls. The problem is you will probably never know until possibly thousands of dollars of damage has been done. It’s not one of those” it will leak” problems More of a “ it can leak”
@ashleywilkes7632 Жыл бұрын
Hm okay. It’s at the back of the shower, so I wondered if ripping the drywall out to expose that gap would work, using wedi sealant to caulk it really well. I suppose the alternative is getting the experienced tile guy to come in and redo the shower, which is fair. At least it’s not a full bathroom remodel…yet
@genecarden780 Жыл бұрын
@@ashleywilkes7632 if I’m understanding you correctly it sounds like that would work. That is kinda what I meant by” tearing it out” and fixing it. I meant remove the finished wall in that area. Not remove everything.Sorry my reply was poorly worded.

This was an excellent instructional video, complete with valuable comments. That said, I am astounded that home building design has remained in the dark ages. This is not a comment on Wedi or your technique specifically, but the whole idea of putting penetrations thru a shower wall where water inevitably goes, with the only thing preventing wood rot being a Rube Goldberg concoctions of sealant tape, caulking, and rubber grommets. Lots of caulking. Lots of sealant. Valves recessed inside the wall and nearly inaccessible from the front. Certainly there are better ways -- scandinavian type showers with fully exposed plumbing perhaps? Larger one piece water proof backing boards and some kind of corner sealing mechanism? This new shower is essentially unchanged from one in a 1955 home except it has a single mixer valve (dubious improvement) vs a two knob water control shower. Still thumbs up for the excellent quality educational video. Thank you!

Over the years I built about 15 tile showers using Hardibacker over a vapor barrier. I used a preslope under a mudded shower pan. If I built more showers I would use a system like this. It took me longer to put up the vapor barrier than it takes this guy to put up all the wall boards. A lot of that is because he is faster than I ever was, but I could see time savings in every step of the way with this system. And the end product might be better. When you build a tile surround for a bathtub the vapor barrier should drain into the tub over the flange. Except water draining down that path leads to mold at the base of the tile so you caulk and there is no place for the vapor barrier to drain? I don't like either solution. What I like is keeping that water from going through the tile board and that is what a system like this accomplishes.

Weeoh, excellent tutorial. I’m in the same boat with a total bathroom renovation project. The only exception here will be full overlap all the way around tub with my Wedi board. My walls were badly out of square. So my ferrying strips have me about 1/4” out from the tub lip. It’s okay cause I’ll just make up the difference with Wedi caulk. I will also run a glue bead down each stud because that’s just me. I will use my finger to level caulk at the tub because a putty knife might actually scratch the tub…. That would be me for sure LOL. Okay, so here I go. My inner tub wall has been fitted..l. Now the glue and caulk. Wish me luck everyone. My tile guy comes in two weeks so I hope my end product will suitable for him. Later

I was always taught the backboard sits on the flange and the tile then goes down to the tub. I personally think the way you did the first wall would be more water tight, however won't your drain no longer be centred?
@shkhamd2 жыл бұрын
Also some says that method has the risk if the sealent breaks then water would get to the edge of the backbaord and damage it, which is why backboard on flange, tile down to tub was recommended, idk which is more practical.
