Love those chords. For years, I thought the whole song was just section 1, repeated over and over. You can almost sing the whole thing with those four chords, but it is not the same. Great song, great English lyrics, great chord progression. Was it Jobim who wrote this? Genius. I love Al Jarreau's version, too.

D#m6(9)/F# reminds me of diminished 7chord shape that's usually played on the A string. It helps me remember it.

Great tutorial! I particularly like how you broke it into repeated patterns; makes it so much simpler to understand. One thing that would have made it easier would have been a "map" using the words as a guide. So I made one using your nomenclature based on an Elis Regina version. Sounds nominally correct to my ear. I was just playing this along with the original song and I found that in the B section (where you play the Ebmaj7 chord) they often play an Em7b5 chord instead of Ebmaj7. All you have to do is get that Eb a half note up and you're already there.

Learned some nice new shapes here thanks, our singer will be pleased with the sound and key (she's alto) although I find the standard Ebmin. shape easier to form after the Ebmaj7...it seems to fit okay

This is a great lesson and you have done a nice job making it the least bit understandable. I just don't get the song though, its just a rambling tune that doesn't seem to start or end or even have much of a distinguishable middle. I hadn't ever heard it so I figured something might be lost in translation so I searched and listened to almost every version I could find and you know what?... I still don't get it. There are people that love this tune more than anything and I'm happy for them! It's simple enough to play, as long as you have a chord sheet. Thanks Sean, it was a great lesson. 👍🏻

To me it's like a song-representation of a flowing river - it vaguely seems like it is flowing down-stream? No beginning, middle or end, just a continuous flow My interpretation is that some of Sean's A, B, C sections are just different versions of turn-arounds that can be appended, and i just kind of let them fly as they come to me.
