Bigwig ambushes Woundwort and they fight to exhaustion. The dog arrives and kills many of the Efrafan soldiers. Hearing the commotion, Woundwort abandons Bigwig and fearlessly confronts the dog. No trace of Woundwort is found, leaving his fate ambiguous.
Warning!!!!!
To adults or teens who are watching this video with young children,tell them to cover their eyes for they they see violence. Thank you and enjoy.

Woundwurt absolutely, but not with Bigiwg. That's what makes his character arc so great, he started off as the arrogant bully, who put himself above others. By the end he became the protector of the other rabbits and was prepared to die defending Hazel's warren.

I still remember the goosebumps I got as a child listening to that quote. General Woundwort terrified me as a child, and Bigwig fearlessly facing him down was one of my favorite childhood moments.

The end of the exchange is even better in the book. When Woundwurt asks Bigwig why he keeps fighting Bigwig answers with: "My chief rabbit has told me to defend this run, and until he says otherwise, I shall stay here."

Luke47895 probably one of the best moments I ever experienced reading a novel. Just how woundwort started to realize that he was afraid of Bigwig and how he just assumed the chief rabbit would be some stronger rabbit.

Love how General Woundwort shits himself a bit when Bigwig tells him his chief told him to defend the warren.
@rampancyproductions

The book clarifies this a little bit more, if a rabbit was chief it was because they were a big enough boss to earn it, Bigwig had him evenly matched and he was thinking he now had to fight an even tougher rabbit “if” he beats bigwig, depending on if he heard the riot on the surface he was either going up to get more help or thinking it was the chief. Also a sweet little moment in that bigwig finally acknowledged hazel as chief.
@tomnorton4277

@@rampancyproductions In the Netflix version, Woundwort had an annoying sidekick who spelled out why he was taken aback. Just the simple "your... chief?" in this version was all we needed. However, I'll give the Netflix version credit for this. It gave us a payoff for Woundwort being taken aback. In this version, Woundwort never realized who the chief was but in the Netflix version, he saw Hazel leading the dog and heard Bigwig call him "Hazel Ra". Woundwort realized that the chief wasn't the mighty warrior he was building up in his head and burst out laughing, even taking note of the fact that Hazel was visibly limping by calling him "that lame rabbit".

I'm here because BBC and Netflix is going to remake this into a TV series 'this remake is set out to prove that Watership Down is not 'terrifying and brutal.' This is actually what they said! I don't know about you all but nature and survival is what Watership Down is about and like it or not, nature IS terrifying and brutal. By taking that away you take away everything that made Watership Down what it was.

+Jack Hamilton They're removing the blood. I think I may do a petition on Change.org to stop BBC and Netflix from ruining Watership Down. You can't ruin a classic movie like this. This is nature animals get killed everyday by other animals. It's children today who think that animals live forever. And parents who complained about this movie being to violent haven't seen a anime where dogs kill bears, and die either from sacrificing themselves or being brutally killed by bears. Or other movies/anime where animals get killed.
@Funinightmare
@Funinightmare 8 жыл бұрын
amanogirl1 I'm not so sure if a petition will do much good, BBC only cares about the money they'll get back from the people paying for their TV licenses. The only way Watership Down will be stopped is if the show is so terrible they have to cancel it, it can't just be a bad adaptation of the book it has to be a horrible show on it's own or just flat out boring.

@@aidencarey1551 The book never points to a winner, but t 2hend to last chapter details how Hazel survived the cat on the farm, the eldest daughter looks after Hazel until he's healed and they release him back to Watership Down. During that period the dog returns wounded. No indication that the general survived or died but the wounds on the dog suggested an epic fight and the Dog killed woundwart or woundwart eventually ran away and the dog didn't chase due to it's injuries. But either way the point is Woundwart, dead or alive, becomes a legend. Of course one theme of the book is how Hazel and co adventures all became legends and stories. In the final chapter Hazel has lived long and he realises the story a mother is telling her children is his own, but attributed to El-ahrairah (which implies many of the El-ahrairah legends they tell each other have also, over time, been folded into the El-ahrairah legends), likewise when Hazel dies El-ahrairah;s spirit takes his spirit away, not the black Rabbit, which implies they also could be the same being and it's El-ahrairah takes the spirits of heroic Rabbits to the afterlife.

It's a glorious moment, especially as Big Wig said at the start he mocked the idea of him acknowledging Hazel as Chief Rabbit. It also stuns Woundwort as he had no idea Hazel was chief Rabbit and assumed only a more powerful Rabbit could command Big Wig, who he just thought to a draw, the narrow tunnel helping big wig equalise the power difference between them. Woundwart thought this because he only knew to rule through power and fear and never conceived little Hazel could command Big Wig and co. I think it always implied (to me) Woundwart, who never wanted to be seen as weak, thought the dog because he feared fighting his imagined even bigger and stronger chief rabbit that commanded Big Wig actually scared him.

@tomnorton4277 Ай бұрын
I think that's more for the soldier than the dog itself. Woundwort's not afraid. He's pissed off. One thing people tend to forget about Woundwort is that he genuinely believes he's protecting his fellow rabbits. The novel even specifies that he personally guards Efrafa, helps dig when the other rabbits are tired, and keeps an eye on the litters. Most tyrants would see that kind of activity as work for their underlings. The litter watching in particular is doe's work in rabbit society but Woundwort's perfectly willing to do it himself.
@danielebowman
@danielebowman Ай бұрын
@@tomnorton4277 Also, in the book, Woundwort's own legend suggested he killed a dog in a house previously. Likewise, reading between the lines, Woundwort also thought Bigwig must be chief rabbit because he was the biggest and strongest, Woundwort only knows violence, fear and power, so when Bigwig fights him to a draw (helped by the narrow tunnel) and declares he's doing it because his chief told him to, that frightens Woundwort who assumes there must be an even bigger and fearsome rabbit to be Bigwig's leader. Which is why he fights the dog, he's beaten one before so doesn't fear them and fears fighting his imaginary even stronger chief Rabbit. So it's a sort of suicide when he doesn't have to admit he's afraid and not have to be humiliated his imagined most fearsome rabbit around.. The irony of course is Woundwort met Hazel just before the battle and never thought to consider he could be the chief rabbit due to his size and .disposition.

I think the filmmakers made a big mistake here. They shouldn't have shown the dog on-screen until the last few seconds. They should have just focused on Woundwort in the hole with Bigwig, then have Woundwort overhear the commotion outside, emerge to the surface, annoyed that everyone is retreating, and THEN revealed the dog with a dead rabbit in his mouth. Would have made the scene 10x more scary. That said, I did quite like the symbolism of this final battle; a monster being consumed by an even bigger monster.

Godson Alvarado Was he killed by the dog, or did he survive? I don't think it was EITHER. I think Woundwort and the dog had a brief fight, but both of them were already worn out from earlier. Both of them retreated. Woundwort then succumbed to his wounds from the dog shortly afterwards, probably a few hours later, in some isolated spot in the forest, and his body would likely have been feasted on by the foxes.

No he became a meal. An 80 pound dog with teeth like that.... There wasn't even a fight. Just one bite and it was done.

@@cybernautadventurer _I think Woundwort and the dog had a brief fight, but both of them_ _were already worn out from earlier._ Four years late, but how exactly do you figure that _the dog_ was worn out? He was literally tearing through Efrafa ass without so much as a paper cut or a pant before Woundwort emerged from the warren entrance. Meanwhile, Woundwort was bloodied and panting heavily at that point, so it was pretty clear that his fight with Bigwig took a lot out of him. Regardless of the intended ambiguity of the scene's ending, the victor should be obvious.

What kind of rabbit would fight a dog? General Woundwort, of course. This movie makes rabbits behave in a way they wouldn’t in real life.

The body of the general is never found?! Pretty fucking obvious. I got a big dog like that, and a rabbit who wants to fight him hahaha, bit hard to believe. He would kill hazes, rabbits, cats, swines etc. Lovely dog, with an pretty strong hunting instinct though!
@oldgordo61

Woundwort's body probably ended up in the river after the dog was done with him. I think the intention of the writer to make Woundwort a larger than life character physically and metaphorically speaking..not knowing exactly what happened to Woundwort just adds to the mystique of the character. Even if Woundwort's body was never found, Hazel 's plan worked and Woundwort's threat and danger to Hazel's warren ended for good.
