the ending irritated me as it laked the impact of the original and the book. This version was a crap camera pan away and then comes back and "WOW" hazel and the Black Rabbit are gone so he must be dead......ugh. Even the final Dog battle with efefra was flat and lacked the drive and power of the original and the book. I however did enjoy this version it was dark and captured the tone of the book well, giving Dandilion a bigger role as in the book. But the biggest crime is this version omitted Pipkin!!!!! unforgivable!!!! an outrage!!!! lol.

I'll be honest, when I saw the trailer I thought the series was gonna be dogshit, but man was I ever wrong. Had me emotionally invested in every scene, the voice acting was top notch, and while the animation occasionally left something to be desired, I feel it properly payed homage to the original. Another thing that surprised me that I DIDN'T mind was the censorship, there was practically no gore at all and I still found it fantastic.

Me as well :'( Holly's death was poetic, Hazel's death was sad [and also not so clear], but it was Woundwort's death where I couldn't stop my tears off... the opening scene of the 4th episode, where he was a child who witnessed his parents and friends slained by a fox... the harsh reality of the rabbits in general and his own in particular that made him who he is... not to take off from his cruelty which he was responsible for, but standing infront of his death he showed that he was never playing power games and never lied, or at least not those were his core leading spirit... he was true and sincere in his cruelty all along... he was truely damaged since his childhood trauma and forged into what he become... a victim of circumstances who becomes a psychopath and catch the reality in a twisted way... and then his monologue scene where like you said, his voice softened with a smile... the background music...and all that combined, the story of Woundwort was so moving :'(

There's just something about that story, and especially that ending, that I can't stop thinking about. I like to be emotional, and to be honest, I've never watched a more touching ending to a movie or show than this. So much for touching on themes. Having watched the original from 1978 I know one of the themes is death, something they watered down for this version as the group has a few deaths in the original before they even reach the warren. The main theme is about liberty and compassion vs tyranny, one they leaned more heavily on in this version. Eventually even the rabbits from Efrafans even turn against their tyrannical leader after seeing what true leadership through respect and kindness looks like.

I liked it quite a lot, but felt the 1978 film did more with less. I felt that in particular the whole notion of "rabbits brimming with tricks to win" was evident in that one, much stronger than in this version. Efrafa didn't need tricks: it just overwhelmed, and used force and the bludgeon to rule. It became one of the 1000. And Hazel and his bunch used tricks to defeat it (the bird, the boat, the dog being the best examples). This is a great strong theme in the 1978 film, and it comes up over and over. As a result, Hazel's bunch feels more lively, more like rabbits. That's the point. In this version, the last two episodes lose focus on that and it's a slog to the final battle. It feels random, as if Efrafa just runs out of time. In the 1978 film, they are outwitted and defeated. The book too. It holds together better and is more satisfying. After all, first they must catch you.

7:00 Remember, children: Don't build industrial structures or else you'll create a totalitarian rabbit society! I find this series' criticism of humanity partially stupid (not necessarily unfounded, but badly made). There are three dimensions of criticism: 1. How humans treat each other 2. How humans treat animals 3. Humanity's impact on the environment In one scene a rabbit says that evil comes from humans and that we are the only beings that kill for reasons other than to survive (like predators do). In reality animals sometimes kill even if it wouldn't be necessary for them to survive, but you can't blame them because they don't have the mental faculties to evaluate what's necessary and moral and instead only act on instinct. Humans, on the other and, are not only the only ones that can (knowingly and willingly) be evil but also the only ones that can be good, being able to distinguish and decide between the two. But the series' way of criticizing the evil part of this is completely absurd since it portrays rabbits as having the same intelligence and (bad) behaviour as humans, which is the reason for almost all of the conflict in the series. For example, the way the totalitarian warren treats delinquents is pointed out by one rabbit as something only humans do (thinking of ways to torture others). However, the fact that there are also rabbits commiting such acts proves that in this fictional universe humans are not the only source of evil and that rabbit behaviour is not different from human behaviour in any way (they even live in organized societies). And even in reality it would be nonsensical to promote "animality" / present animals as good examples because they don't commit acts of evil since the only reason they don't is that they aren't intelligent enough, so you'd argue for living like animals (doing nothing with your intelligence), which would be immoral as I'll explain later. In real life, of course, the message that only humans do such things is correct, but the series' premise with anthropomorphic rabbits is utterly unsuitable for getting this message across because within this fictional setting it is contradictory. In fact, I don't think that it's possible at all to write a fictional story from the perspective of non-humans that criticises humans in this way. Because in order to understand the subject matter the non-humans would need to be sapient, which would make them moral agents. But then they would be able to commit acts of evil, just like us and the rabbits in Watership Down. Furthermore, it would be immoral if those intelligent beings did not use their intelligence to prevent suffering (e.g. inventing medicine to protect themselves and others from diseases). And in order to protect each other effectively they need a society, for which they need rules and punishments to prevent individual members of the society from acting immoral and violating others' rights as well as to ensure that decisions that have been made are followed by everyone in order to act unified as a society. So in the end you get what you see here: a bunch of humans in animal bodies. By the way, why are rabbits the only intelligent animals (save for that one bird) and the rest are mindless killing machines? Well, actually, there is a difference between humans and rabbits in this series: They are inferior to us, which is the only reason why they are the victims, not any moral superiority. For whatever reason (maybe the lack of hands), the rabbits are unable or unwilling to build a civilization like we have. They may live in an organized way, but (apart from their dens) they don't build anything, which is why they don't have an impact on the environment, unlike us. I would argue that for an industrialized civilization harming the environment doesn't require conscious acts of evil but happens automatically due to collective ignorance or not caring enough. But I still grant the series this point of criticism because humans have the intelligence to understand the issue and potentially deal with it, allowing for environmental damage to be viewed as an act of evil (although you have to distinguish between concrete actions like the building of that housing estate and general, emergent effects of society that no individual is directly responsible for). Okay, this has gotten a bit out of hand. So let me summarize the series' criticism and my evaluation of it. 1. How humans treat each other According to the series, only humans kill and torture each other out of evilness, which is true in reality but wrong in the series. It also fails to acknowledge that as the only sapient lifeforms humans are also the only ones capable of being good. 2. How humans treat animals This point is related to the one above since the series criticises humans for harming animals for no good reason. This is a valid point of criticism as long as the inflicted harm is really unnecessary. What's not valid, though, is criticising humans for killing animals for food while condoning the same behaviour in predatory animals (except if you argue that nowadays it's possible for us to survive on a vegan diet. Maybe the authors belong to those more "radical" people that think that not being vegan is immoral, at least the message at the end (respect all lifeforms and consider their suffering) reminds me of Peter Singer and Albert Schweizer). 3. Humanity's impact on the environment This is the most justified and least contradictory point of criticism in the series, but also the one that gets the least attention. Of course, humanity's impact on the environment is not caused by our moral inferiority but by our superior intellect (not trying to sound endorsing). In conclusion, the series does provide some important messages (from not torturing each other to caring for the environment), but the format in which they are presented (intelligent rabbits criticizing humanity as the source of all evil) seems absurd and those points that actually have a solid foundation are explored too little.

I haven't seen this remake and never read the original novel, but did see the first animated movie. I've heard from reviews that there were a number of things the 2018 did right and did better. Yes animation is shit we know that. Original movie didn't have the best animation, but it was a small company in the 1970's. Some of their designs in this remake look great, I actually love Bigwig's design in the remake. All I will say negatively that I never heard anyone else talk about (and cause, well, never seen the remake) is that I actually really do not like General Woundwart's new design. The way he was designed in the original animated movie as a huge rabbit with that blind eye I found more terrifying. Sure, they made him larger, but in the animated movie, he was... well, fatter looking compared to the much smaller rabbits of his warren and the rabbits of Watership Down. He looked terrifying. And also, I actually really liked how they animated Woundwart speaking in the 1970's movie. It is awkward, but he constantly shows his teeth and looks threatening. This is my opinion though, so do take it with a pinch of salt.

The general is more intimidating in this version. Evil to the core
@chinbunny15 жыл бұрын
Also in the book he is a very large rabbit. You have to watch the new one and read the book. His design in the new one is more like the book. Only difference is he is not blind in one eye.

I didn't quite get the ending.. Hazel died eventhough he didn't seem that old like.. I know he seemed tired and done but not old enough to die already. His injuries couldn't have been the cause either as he survived those for a whole year- The other rabbits were still alive and well too.. I just don't quite get it I guess that the black rabbit really wanted him to join her but.. he really could've just stayed and enjoyed the time with his friends and family, he left way too early- I feel like the ending would've felt better if we saw multiple years pass and everyone getting older and the place filling up with more and more babies, maybe even Hazel's own. It really just didn't feel right, again, it felt as if he left them way too early, like he didn't even get to live his life to the fullest extent

I kinda did not like the ending of it and no not because of hazel dying but because of the unsurnes of his death in the movie from 1978 we can clearly see him laying down dead and than his souls joins the owsla of the black rabbit but here ? It’s like he kinda disappear with the black rabbit and we don’t know if he truly did go with her or kinda did not so like yeah plus the pacing of the 4 episodes were kinda all around the place but overall this mini series was very very good and interesting to watch Still can’t stop thinking of the scene where the black rabbit ask hazel to join and on the next shot their both gone I can only imagine hazel kinda just being like : you know what ? Give me a few more minutes of living and than I can join when I’m actually presented dead
