I remember watching this for the first time when I was eight years old. I woke up early at my great-grandmother's house, and snuck into the living room to watch TV. I watched the whole thing and my great-grandmother, 83 at that time and as healthy as one can wish at that age, came into the living room when this scene came on, didn't say a word and just watched it with me. Afterwards, we had a long conversation about death and what we think comes next. It was one of the most profound conversations of my life. Six months later, she died in her sleep.

What I loved most about this film is that showed that even though death was apart of life, it can be a form achieving true peace. Hazel did so much in his life and saved many, his reward was to follow death and receive eternal peace and happiness.

Thats fine enough, for the rabbits, and the dogs, and the foxes, and all the others. But what of us, now? We arent hunters anymore, not really, and not prey either. Whats is death for us? Do we belong anywhere?

+Henrik Magnusson, Ah, but it depends if one is satisfied with their life and what they've done, if they feel complete.
@Bluehime
@Bluehime 8 жыл бұрын
Henrik Magnusson Well, that's really up to the person. A human has a choice whether they believe it or not. However, due to different cultures/societies, we as a whole are disconnecting our true spirits and seek acceptance and safety from others. Until you know what you really want and where you want to go in the afterlife, you must know who truly are before your body leaves this world.

I love how at the end, despite everyone's fear of him throughout the film, the Black Rabbit is so gentle and welcoming when Hazel finally meets him. Really gets across the idea of coming to terms with death :)

The idea of coming to terms with death has always confused me personally though. If death is so sweet and relaxing, why do we fight for our lives so much?
@p994able
@p994able 6 жыл бұрын
The Toontastic Toon Probably because we have things and goals that we want for ourselves. We want it so bad and like to have that control over things and get it, and so we don't want to die until we do. But when death comes, we realize that the life after is so beautiful, and nothing here compares even though there are beautiful things here in this life.

The black rabbit wasn't meant to be an evil character. He simply has a job to do--a dispenser of justice, and an avenger of wrongs. He is what he is: as the grim reaper is to humans, as the ferryman was to the ancients, the black rabbit is to the rabbit kind.

This is such a perfect representation of Death: terrifying yet inviting, alien yet familiar, the enemy at the door and the friend at your bedside. The look of him drives you to run, to flee this alien thing, but the voice is soft and kind. He understands, he accepts, he welcomes. Come, he beckons, you don't have to fight anymore. You can rest now.

my 7 year old bunny died today. she lived with me in my house, slept with me in my room. she was my best friend. i cannot describe how full of love she was, how she lifted my spirits and warmed my heart every single day of our time together. when she was put to sleep i saw the light leave her eyes, but thought of this moment in watership down. i don't believe in an afterlife, or that her soul ascended into the air or anything like that... but the life that she lived and the love that burst from her entire being makes me know that she can never die. my little bun, my beautiful companion, is forever in my heart.

Too bad movies like this will probably never be made again and its a shame I wish we can stop with the whole animation is for kids because it would be nice every once in while to have a film that is good for older viewers too. I always believed animation is the best way to tell a good story due to the fact that there is so much you can do with it that you cant do with other movies.

+CynderSpirit Luthy ikr. Look at that movie UP. It had some adult ideas in it, not as serious as this but great movie. Because an all kiddy movie will never do it. real life is more interesting than our silly fantasies.
@tropix1666
@tropix1666 8 жыл бұрын
+CynderSpirit Luthy Ok, I agree that Disney in particular is VERY squeamish about showing blood, like this film. I'm 40, by the way, before you accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about. However, you can't claim that there is an "all animation is for kids" attitude out there. Japanime is definitely not for kids. But look at what even Disney is tackling these days, albeit without blood: self sacrifice for a sibling (Frozen), giving up your future for another (Tangled), sexual lust (Hunchback of Notre Dame) Transvestitism (Mulan), etc. These are all mature themes. I'll give you that Watership Down doesn't intersperse jokes or try to lighten the mood, at all. That's what makes it great. However, I wonder how many of your nostalgic readers really know what this is about? Do they know that the scene in the human-fed warren is a commentary on the liberal "artsy" lifestyle and on welfare queens? Do they understand that the Soviet Union did at one time exist and threatened the existence of the United States, and that Efrafa is a VERY thinly veiled reference to it? I'd guess not. One more reason to hate Millennials. You think you're better than the rest of us and throw your sophomoric commentary out there while sucking up to Hillary Clinton and the rest of the liberal establishment, something this book and movie were 1000% against.

This is literally my favorite part of anything ever. The bittersweetness I felt when I first watched this was overwhelming. I felt said that Hazel died, but it was a good death. He dieded in peace. He lead his friends to safety and a new warren and helped defeat one of the land's biggest foes, General Woundwort. And finally he dies to join the Black Rabbit, to live life after death.

I agree with you completely. I was young when I first saw the film, and I read the book immediately after, and I loved and still love them both. I cried my eyes out then (and still -- yes I am a grown man) at the ending -- so beautiful. Old Hazel has lived a fruitful life; his warren, we can see, is healthy and thriving, and he has lived a long life, marked by his gray whiskers. I almost can't describe the feeling I had when I realized the "Stranger" was the Black Rabbit himself -- it was a shock, but also so gutwrenchingly powerful and beautiful and perfect only in the way that something like that can be perfect. And what an honor to humble, brave, true Hazel, to be asked to join the Black Rabbit's Owsla!!

He lived long enough up to 96 he had so many birthdays ,saw so many children than he thought he could and his hard work paid off with many generations having a wonderful childhood and one day he woke up from his bed and saw a stranger besides him he stared to the newcomer for a moment before recognizing him as Rudyard Kipling (which he was inspired by his novel "the jungle book") "You've been feeling tired",said the stranger,"but I can do something about that. I've come to ask whether you'd care to join my council of all the great writers.We shall be glad to have you and you'll enjoy it.If you're ready, we might go along now"They went outside of his house .The sun was shining and in spite of the cold they were his family and few people reading his book and exploring the landscapes . It seemed to Richard that he would not be needing his body any more,so he left it lying on the down ,but stopped for a moment to watch his people and children and to try to get used to the extraordinary feeling that strength and speed were flowing inexhaustible out of him into their sleek young bodies and healthy senses ."You needn't worry about them",said his companion. "They'll be all right and thousands writers inspired by you waiting their turn like them. If you come along I'll show you what I mean".

What I love about this scene is that it showed me in a way that without death, there is no life. There must be a time for everyone to go and that's alright. When we die, we become the grass and new life of both animals and humans eat the plants that grow on the grass. It's life and you must not be afraid when that time comes, because then, you will find internal peace at last.

I'm 34 and I'm welling up from watching this again and reading some of the comments. This was a true masterpiece. Regarding the whole uproar about it being shown on Channel 5 this Easter Sunday, during the day; Guess what parents, its always shown around this time! Surely you would've known a bit about it at least. I mean it is rather well-known! I bet there are quite a lot of these parents who will quite happily let their young kids play GTA or watch any of the countless and repetitive music channels, where many of the music videos are little more than 'soft porn.' Surely a bit of realism and violence just adds to the film's overall appeal and message. It's common knowledge that this is a moving and often downright tragic tale, but why water it down? (no pun intended) I would say though, finally, that I disagree with the 'U' certficate. I'm not sure why they couldn't change it to a 'PG' at least but anyway it's sad that films like this may be a thing of the past.

The ending always made me tear up a little, but with the recent passing of John Hurt-one of the greatest and most charismatic British actors to grace our screens and a man whom I had the utmost pleasure of meeting and shaking hands with-this scene becomes all the more heart wrenching.

In 1st grade my teacher said bring in a movie for Easter, it has to have a bunny in it. I had two choices Bugs Bunny or Watership Down. I took Watership Down. She played it and started to do something an hour later when she was done she started to pay attention to the movie and then saw our faces. I was no longer allowed to bring in anything. She exempted me from show n' tell everything. Never got bullied anymore either, can't image why.

Ive always felt that this scene was very beautiful and very true to life. Throughout the whole film, in Hazel's youth, the Black Rabbit was treated with a kind of terror. But here he is in his old age, clearly world weary, and the Black Rabbit speaks to him in a peaceful tone. It represents the changing of our perseption of death as we grow older. As a young person one thinks of death almost as a punishment, but in old age death is often seen as a welcome release

I can't stand how idiots think that just because something's animated that automatically means it's for kids. This movie wasn't made for kids it was made for adults as were a lot of other animated features from the 70s and 80s. Western animation has so much potential and beauty and it's always shoved aside as just "kids stuff" or "comedy" when it can illustrate amazing stories like this one.

This isnt death, you never die, you are an Eternal Soul, A Divine Being of Light. You Spiritually evolve and reincarnate into another " form " of Being. I was blessed enough to " Awaken " to this and more and the day I left my body was the day I knew this world we live in is not " real " per say. As a child in the 70s watching this movie it profoundly moved me and it is to this day one of my favorites ever. I just come to find this again in Divine Synchronicity to my teachings and self preparation of leaving this body to put on a Higher Form of Light as I ascend and " resurrect " into the Higher Frequency of " Being " while still on this Planet; as I " Master " this realm. Let those that have ears hear....

You only deny yourself your True Divine Nature by being so negative, angry and attacking something you do not know and understand. If you sought Sacred Knowledge and Wisdom and #Experienced what I talk about then you would not spew out such ignorant and arrogant waste of words and breath from your mouth. Go seek, study and go within and you will be your own "proof", unless you are AFRAID of it, usually the case with most people who act like you. Nothing to be afraid of or guilty of, go see, feel and BE for yourself Brian.
@IlersichProductions

Chris Schiff That's hardly how one constructs a logical syllogism. How do you define "divine", "soul", and "spiritual"? What evidence do you have for divinity, souls, or spiritual beings?

#Myself by #Experience and #Reincarnation that is how Sir/Madam and soon you and the Planet will #Know all thats been lost, hidden and forgotten from within you due to Low Consciousness. You can know this too if you CHOOSE to seek and #Become
@IlersichProductions
@IlersichProductions 10 жыл бұрын
Chris Schiff You haven't answered the previous questions. What are your definitions? What evidence do you have for your claims? What were your experiences? How do you know you were reincarnated? If reincarnation exists, where do extra souls come from as the population grows? What is low consciousness, and how does it hide things from me? Is there some objective metric for levels of consciousness? I'm afraid that what you're saying is rather vague, and as a result, is difficult to understand.
@ChristopherSchiffermiller
@ChristopherSchiffermiller 10 жыл бұрын
Yes vague indeed but, it is just to get people to be interested, ask questions and discuss, which you indeed did and for that I am VERY happy. 99.9% will respond like Mr. Brian did. I will explain some things here, the rest is to involved to discuss and write in such a small space so if you are further interested you can email me Schiffy77@gmail.com for more detailed answers. Ok lets start with"evidence " and "experiences" which again I will briefly tell you here. After being fed up with the 'norm " here on Earth I followed my Heart that has always been pretty wide open and was able to withstand harsh no-loving dysfunctional family life with every type of abuse and rebelled against the typical societal and "religious" dogmatic conditioning. I became a "truthseeker". I asked questions that most people dont even think of or are afraid to ask. Things I thought and sort of knew within were confirmed via research on levels dealing with religions, governments, banks, royal families, pyramids, ancient world, origins, etc. While this was going on I had been in therapy due to a divorce, car accident, surgery and just to heal from my early life as well. This all was the catalyst for my Spiritual Awakening. Its sort of like a pre-requisite to go further up the Vibrational Ladder. So again briefly, I all of a sudden was having feelings that I would never eat again, save the Planet, turn into 'something ' and other at the time, strange feelings and thoughts. Had knock out drag out arguments with 'Jesus ' and this was like stage two. One night while laying in bed contemplating this new found interests and change, i felt an energy come over me and felt my body sway in and out of my physical body like a candle flame and poof! I was "put to sleep " and next thing I am standing/floating outside of my body looking at myself. Didnt even feel strange to me, wasnt scared, was actually very excited, like I was "Free at last free at last God Almighty.." you get the point lol. So I floated up the stairs and followed this black vortex like tunnel into my mothers room and was checking on her, not sure why, just did. Went to turn around and thats when I saw " ET " face to face. I was Energy, " It " was not, it was physical part humanoid, part robot looking and wearing black. Scared the living shit out of me and I flew back to my body and slammed into it like a car wreck. Left my body repeatedly for 2-3 weeks and kept dealing with what i call " Shadow Energy Beings " who dont like " Light Beings " obviously as they attack on sight or " feel '. From there I had an implant removed from my brain during meditation which I just started doing on my own. This allowed me to receive downloads constantly for months on end while awake and sitting around the house or laying in bed.They were like images, movies, ancient writings, number codes, etc, and so on playing in my head, downloading into my memory. I also just lost desires to eat meat, dairy or anything shitty overnight. One night I got "beamed with the Light " literally an infinite bright white Light beamed my crown and 3rd eye and lit up my brain and heart like a Sun. Was so loving and I cried my eyes out

This is one of the two most bittersweet movie endings I’ve ever seen with a heavy emphasis on the bitter half. In this movie, Hazel has outlived all of his original companions and after being alone for years, he is finally reunited with them in the afterlife. The other movie with a heavy bittersweet ending I’ve seen would be THX 1138 (1971).

This scene and the movie in general captured the essence, the beautiful spirit of life, the twists and the turns - tragedy and the absolute glory in all its simplicity. I was brought up as a born and bred gypsy and resonate it with it on a very special level, the struggles and the romance, to be torn and be encouraged by all of life's wonders. when I watch this I return to those times and my soul bursts with song. such happy tears.

This film has a great score... but it almost didn't happen that way. The score was originally supposed to be done by another composer (Malcolm Williamson), who died before he got much of it written. Only the music for the Prologue, and the theme that you hear at the very beginning and the very end, is by Williamson. The more famous main theme of the movie, and all other music, was written by the replacement composer, Angela Morley. (I thought that was a nice touch for them to close out the movie with the music written by the composer who died.) (The music for the Prologue was orchestrated by a very talented musician named Lawrence Ashmore, who later worked with Kenneth Branagh's composer, Patrick Doyle, for many years. )

In the book he lived a tidy few summers and reached a mighty age. That was far beyond the normal expected lifespan. Death is a celebration not a tragedy here and the first time in the movie that it’s represented as a homecoming and a new beginning rather than a gruesome end. He’d seen his share of everything and finally he could rest. Nice touch. So well done.

There's a saying of an old man who greets death as an old friend but this is the opposite: for death is greeting the old man as a dear old friend. Not just comforting him in his final moments with a calm voice when the old man is dying but also telling that he's lived a full life & the future he wish has been secured. Only then does the old man happily accept that he's been feeling tired & is happy to sleep
