After rewatching the show and then listening to this song I just realized something that I never thought of before. This is Gary's song. The lyrics are a description of his backstory leading up to the events of the first season down to basically describing some events we only hear of in the second. Amazing. Brilliant writing that I've only been able to discover now that it's discontinued. Now I'm gonna go through all the lyrics I can think of and summarize where they fit into all of this. "Spent a year out in the desert, spent a year out in the sea," is likely referring to Gary's time on earth as a wanted criminal 'deserted' by everyone he cared about followed by his time spent in the ocean of space aboard the Galaxy One. "I spend my nights under the stars just dreamin' of sleep," Pretty self explainitory this one is referring to Gary's forced stay on the Galaxy One. "I still question where I've been, I don't know where I will go," is referencing either the constant wandering of Gary's past and lack of plans for the future or the literal fact that aboard the Galaxy One he was never informed of what and where the satellites he spent his time repairing were and HUE always kept his whereabouts a secret from him to prevent escape. "I just look up to the skies like there's a sign I didn't see I didn't know." Gary's search for meaning and constant questioning of what his father would have told him to do were he still alive. "I know I've lived a wicked life, I will never change your ways." Likely a reference to Gary's own mother who he resents for betraying him, but still recognizes that he's followed in the path of far more closely than his father. "An unapologetic runaway, till my last day." and "We were made of dried up timber, we were made to turn to dust." Do these ones even need explanation after the backstory reveal in season two, spoilers, Gary ran away from home after his Mother left him to grow up there alone in the wake of his fathers death, but not before burning the place to the ground as a final send-off to his old life. "Ohh, take me on down. Ohh, at the gallows it was mercy I had found." This could be a reference to many things from the fact that Gary is openly stated to have been suicidal while aboard the Galaxy One to the idea that it was only after he got imprisoned for his crimes that his life started to improve and he met the people he could rely on. "So I went back to my home, and I burned it to the ground." See the part of his backstory I mentioned above. "An angel sat beside me, we both watched it all fall down." The angel is probably referring to Gary's father. While this could be metaphorical, the last verse leads me to believe that Gary was actually hallucinating the ghost of his father at that point in time(and may still have been doing so up until and continuining into cannon) and believed him to be an angel that was guiding him through life, which really recontextualizes the conversation they share at the end of season one. "I'm a loner of a lover, I'm a lover of my ways. So if your here to take me back, there ain't nothing left to save" not sure about the meaning of 'loner of a lover' that line honestly fits Sheryl better but the rest of it likely refers to more of Gary's criminal past that would have been revealed to us in later seasons had the show continued as well as his internal beliefs that after all he's done he is morally unsalvagable(Edit: after relistening to this song hours later I realized thet this line is preceeded by the words "I said" meaning that Gary would have been directing this statement directly at the "angel" of his father all but confirming that at the point when he burned his old house down he truly believed himself to be irredeemable. This may also explain the "loner of a lover" statement as Gary, despite being full of care and love for those he considers friends and family, no longer has anyone who falls into that category, and isn't willing to risk connecting with someone to that level again, leaving him a loner.). Second chorus is the same as the first with added arson. And the last verse "I made it to the edge, there was nothing left to see, I lit one last cigarette, the angel sat beside of me, I said, "I know you've got your job", He said, "The grace that I have brung, Is that your death is gonna save you, From the things you're running from."" This. This is a doozie. This is likely one of two things, the first is a rather mundane reference to Gary's aforementioned suicidal thoughts and tendencies. The other option, however is that this line was a spoiler as to how the series would end, with Gary going off alone in the hopes of giving his life to bring an end to Invictus one and for all. One last heroic sacrafice to redeem every terrible thing Gary has ever done and save everyone he has left to care about in the process. The edge that the line refers to could have been metaphorical, or it could have literally referred to the edge of existence itself, the place beyond Final Space where Invictus slept before the titans awoke it.
