Fun fact: In much of North America, Earthworms (like Warren) are an invasive species and cause a lot of harm to native populations, especially in forests and national parks. In undergrad, I did a pretty long project that involved counting and cataloging Earthworms and their effects on areas surrounding Lake Michigan. Earthworms alter the quality and composition of soil while breaking down the leaf litter that is so important to the health of a forest. They were initially wipped out by the advancing glaciers in the last ice age. So forest ecosystems in Canada and the northern US evolved for over 10,000 years without them. Many insects and even some vertebrates spend part or all of their lives in the leaf litter. Earthworms are destroying their habitat. The choice of making Warren an Earthworm is more deliberate than many may realize. Much like his real-world counterparts, Warren has shown up in a place where he isn't supposed to be and starts hurting the group dynamic. **Edit** OK Yes, the UK thing has been pointed out a while back. It's bleeped after all so we don't hear it and we all know bleeping something innocuous in a sentence makes the whole thing sound really bad. This also works with the lesson at the end where the problem is concluded to be a worm in his brain making everything seem worse because that's representing the negative voice in our own head. I think it applies. The moment the brain friends call him an eagle, showing that yellow tries to welcome him at least a little bit, Warren sees the perfect oportunity to take control, they think he's a cool wonderful eagle, not as the others that see him as a simple worm. Also, we see that he doesn't really believe he's an eagle, when the brain friends call him "Mr eagle" he says "I'M NOT AN EA-" until he realizes what's happening and continues with his lie, and also does this when he says "How can a confident handsome wor- EAGLE", like he doesn't remember who he is supposed to be, he forgets his own lie for a moment. This is probably also for control, he lies abt being an eagle to trick ppl into thinking he's more powerful than he actually is. Btw, i'm saying all of this because I had a friend like Warren, who did all of the things I mentioned, and even more than that, he made me almost kms, and he knew what he was doing at all times, the things he did weren't harmless mistakes, they we're harmful actions that made me suffer even a year after ending that "friendship". You hit the nail on the head. This episode is extremely underrated with all of the commentary it has on these types of people that are never called out (as you mentioned). I also think there might be lore implications with the “imaginary” older brother coming to the felt puppet world right at the end of the episode, shocking yellow in the process. Perhaps yellow really did have an older brother who was shy and reserved and committed suicide due to someone like warren. Yellow is reminded of what caused his older brothers’ death in his own mind (the brain friends land). Maybe that’s another reason Leslie is totally insane and grieving for the entire series.

I think it's more about what it means for the general psychology of Yellow Guy. In general I found it both sweet and really sad that some of his "favorite thoughts" were things as mundane as his first tooth and him taking bubble baths--what does that say about his life if those are some of the happiest things he can think of? The "shy imaginary older brother" is, imo, him trying to replace the deficit in his own family--from what we've seen, all he really has is a cannibalistic, greedy abusive dad who doesn't care about his safety. And if Lesley is his mom, that might mean his family situation is even worse. An "older brother" fills the role of 'protector' that his dad doesn't live up to, without directly replacing his dad, who he loves. The shyness means that he's gentle, not threatening, and generally a sensitive, nice guy--all things that his father is not, and that Yellow Guy doesn't get very often from other relationships in his life.
@connordarvall84822 жыл бұрын
@@zaynab-to-a I think the shy older brother is actually Yellow just wanting someone underneath him as in the DMIS universe, he's pretty much at the bottom of any pecking order. However, Yellow seems to want to protect the younger brother rather than order him around, which suggests he's altruistic, but powerless to act on those impulses.
@zaynab-to-a2 жыл бұрын
@@connordarvall8482 that sounds mostly true, except he never really seems to care all that much that he's at the bottom of the totem pole, since as Smart Yellow Guy, he pretty much admits to Normal Yellow Guy that before becoming Smart, he saw them as "in charge of him" and seemed to never have questioned that arrangement before ("does this mean they aren't in charge of us anymore?" "maybe they never were"). Imo the "someone under him" theory would make more sense if it was a little brother, since part of the dynamic he experiences in real life comes from his (mental?) age being younger than the other two.

What I liked about this episode was the dual lesson being taught, mainly how the worm simultaneously represents annoying friends that abuse their friendships for personal gain, with the suffering of everyone else, AND the worm being the inner monologue in out own head, our ego always wanting to make ourselves be above everyone else, making up arguments where we immediately win and our opponents immediately feel ashamed. With yellow getting upset at his friend’s seeming cruelty and trying to find a place where he feels supported in both, except this time he and his friends seem to actually make some progress reconciling at the end, before the all out brawl of course lol

I don't believe Warren actually paused the trio in the beginning. Later in the episode you can see him talking to the "audience" but from the trio's perspective. And they aren't frozen. I think more likely is that Warren is making that all up in his head and only pretending he's stopping time to talk to an audience

I feel like the trio are in separate states of awareness of their situation. Duck was very aware of the situation in ep 1, in ep 2 Yellow guy rejects the entire lesson, in ep 3 red guy rejects the very notion of their group. They are continually reset, but never at the same time because if they were all able to work together they may just be able to escape.
@connordarvall84822 жыл бұрын
What I notice is Duck is the quickest to notice anything out of place, but is too narrow-minded to do anything with the information, Red has definite goals, but isn't aware enough of his surroundings to know how to achieve them and Yellow technically has the knowledge to help them both, but has been intentionally altered to be clueless as he is the least able to resist the show's denizens. All three of them have the pieces needed to escape, but are trapped by their own flaws.

That is interesting that that seems to go with each of their respective meanings, where Duck is meant to show old where he catches on stuff little slow but is too comfortable to change it or is adamant on changing it because he doesn't like it, Red Guy meaning to represent adolescent where he catches on faster and wants to change but is still gullible enough and stubborn where that's his downfall, and Yellow Guy youth where he's not exactly fast and not exactly slow, but he does have the capacity to change it but is the most gullible and vulnerable to things. It's very interesting indeed...

Yes. I have met someone like that, and was stuck in a possessive gaslighting friendship for 2 years. Everyone I know thinks they're harmless and friendly, and I thought the same thing till I was declared a best friend five months into the friendship. The thing was, they caught me in the most vulnerable I've ever been in my life, when I'd just lost two past friends that I've had since third grade and lost my grandmother.

I think another reason this episode is controversial is I see a lot of people trying to slot the puppets into a bit of a found family dynamic, or at least want to see these characters find solace in their bonds to make it through the "absolute nightmare" that is their situation. However, the Friendship episode is by far where they're the meanest with each other, with even the one moment of solace being cut off with an actual physical fight. It makes sense the creators would do that, as it's quite ironic and very funny (this is my favorite episode because of how often it makes me laugh), but I've seen a lot of people get put off by how meanspirited it is when they want to see the characters take care of each other.

I think what I like most of this episode is the interpretation (I don't know how popular this is, it's just how I view the episode) that Warren represents mental affliction/anxiety. One may attempt to escape into their mind when their life is full of trauma, and we can certainly say that applies to Yellow. The worm in his brain, his anxiety represented by Warren, appears after his friends insult him and convinces him that Red Guy and Duck aren't his real friends. He tries to escape into his mind to protect himself and disassociate from his real life situation, but inevitably that worm in his brain continues to wreak havoc and turn his happy place into just another place full of misery. The place he once escaped to no longer works no matter how much he tries to avoid Warrenn/his anxious feelings, and inevitably all his imaginary friends get to where they can't stand to be around YELLOW due to the behavior of the worm in his brain. As someone who's dealt with a ton of anxiety over my lifetime, it sometimes results in my second guessing all my friendships and relationships. Surely my friends secretly hate me and want nothing to do with me. If you really believe that like I did (and sometimes still struggle with) that the people in my life hate me, I would start to get desperate and more forceful to try and keep my friends around which only resulted in pushing them away further. In the end though, Red Guy and Duck came through for him showing that to an extent they really *do* love and care for Yellow as a friend. Granted they all try to kill each other at the end, but you get what I mean. Also noteworthy they needed advice from the doctor on the computer to get help with Yellow.

Watching warren is awkward and painful because we’re actually really similar and seeing him desperately trying to look impressive and make ‘friends’ while also being ridiculed constantly is just uncomfortable. It reminds me of why I never socialize with people. Luckily if you’re like warren but you’re aware of it you can stop yourself from harming or manipulating others. On another subject, I love the transformation of warren and the metaphors being used with the hyper realism at the end being connected with coming to the realization of how threatening and potentially dangerous he actually is. Its really been hard for me overall to have my own personal “worst” episode of this season of DHMIS, because I feel like all six of them just have so much fantastic writing, set design, surreal horror/humor, etc. put into them that I’ve found so much to enjoy about all of them. And that DEFINITELY extends to this episode as well. I love how its perhaps the most message-oriented episodes of the show, because the type of toxic friendships that Warren represents are all to common in the real world. And it was so fun watching the DHMIS writers/crew put such a surreal spin on this idea. I also LOVE the fairly large role that they give to Colin, as he’s probably the Original Series teacher they they give the MOST lines to in this show. And he also actually joins in the three of them on insulting Warren/calling out his lies. That “Freelancers deserve to die” line is also one of the funniest lines of the series, and I find it interesting how this is the only episode where the Teacher for them is ready to leave, but its Red Guy who actually gets him to stay. Overall, I feel like this is an over-hated episode as well.
@CartooneyJooney2 жыл бұрын
I don't know how often this gets noticed but if you listen to their little argument (which is difficut when they're shouting over eachother) they do try to do better, even taking good parts of Warrens advice before the whole thing decends into madness lol. First Red tries to calmly tell Duck not to be so mean: 'we said we wern't going to talk to him like that anymore'. Then yellow stands up for himself: 'Hey you can't talk to me like that!'. I tend to lose track of it after Reds 'I'm dealing with it' but from transcrpts other people made it seems to stop making sense after that point.

I feel Warren's childhood experiences of perceived rejection have been clouded by bitterness and loneliness. I believe yellow (as the childlike member) during his descent into disassociation is getting further into becoming like Warren. If yellow felt duck/red guy were just mean friends, saw his brain friends as abandoning him then he could very well become bitter and toxic like Warren, reflected by the void with nothing but the two left, yellow guy looking like himself again but on the cusp of being consumed in it all. I also feel Warren being generally disliked, breaking the 3rd wall and creating a sense of grandeur is all to confront the audience with the edifices we create to feel loved and worthy to others and how it ends up driving people away. There's a grain of sympathy in Warren because we're all vulnerable to feelings of isolation and the disgust is used to find lessons in his flaws.

I think Warren is supposed to symbolize self doubt, insecurities, and maybe even depression. Cus no matter where you are in your mind, trying to escape this inner demon through whatever coping mechanisms that make you happy, he’ll always be there to take that away from you. Tell you that your not good enough, or that no one really cares about you. Near the end of the episode, we see Red in full on denim & he says “The worm in my brain tells me that I don’t have the body type to pull off denim, but I just tell it to pipe down.” This could’ve been a subtle message saying that if you have a Warren in your brain that’s beating you down, just tell him to shut up because you are good enough, you can pull off denim, and your friends really do care about you.

Thank you so much for covering this episode! It's strange, you don't go in expecting to relate to anything in DHMIS - it's just a weird, creepy show with puppets, maybe some "lore" if you can find it. I related to this episode so much, though. Those feelings poor Yellow has - I'm so stupid, I let my friends down, no one wants to be my friend, etc - those are the kind of thoughts I've struggled with for years, and still do to some extent. The urge to retreat into your imagination (where no one can hurt you) is so strong... and the fear that you might be like Warren and go out of your way to please people so they don't hate you... It gets to you. =/ I thought the DHMIS team not only handled this topic well, but in a way only they really could - with creepy puppets and subtle jabs at Anti-Bullying PSAs! XD I'm surprised you didn't talk much about what Red and Duck were doing while Yellow was dealing with Warren. Remember, Computer Day only comes once a year for them; if they didn't care, as Warren suggested, they could have just left Yellow to sit in that chair while having the computer all to themselves. But no - they stopped what they were doing as soon as Yellow went all wonky, recruited Warren to "get him out," and spent their precious limited computer time specifically trying to help Yellow. Duck REALLY wanted to see that skeleton on the dark web - but Yellow was more important. =) THAT is what I loved most about this episode. Instead of shoving message down your throat like a kid's show would about the same topic, they did the creepy puppet shenanigans with Warren and demonstrated how Red and Duck really do think of Yellow as their friend and care about his well-being.

I’ve been struggling a lot with depression lately, and it’s so easy for me to believe my friends actually hate me and all I do is inconvenience or hurt people. That’s why I love having Warren, a character I can despise that represents all my negative thoughts. The end song with reassurance helps calm me down sometimes, and remember that people do care and we all have a worm in our brain. The ending credits just mainly makes me laugh since it sounds like some of the bickering(although it’s playful) I have with my friends as well so it doesn’t take away from the happy comforting ending. So TLDR: I very much struggle with a variety of mental illnesses and this episode helps me cope, making it my favorite

I love how these videos continue to get longer! I have a personal theory that when yellow got insulted by the other two, whatever they said wasn't actually bad. Hell, it might have not even been negative, it might have been them tryong to segway into the lesson of the episode, about friendship and loving yourself, despite your flaws and the pesky worm in your brain. However, i think that warren (or someone, im leaning closer to warren) intentionally bleeped them out to make it seem worse, as an entryway for HIS version of the lesson. And yellow, being portrayed as childlike and naive, could easily see bleeped out language as the worst possible thing you could say to someone!

Something I find interesting is how in the original YT series, Red seemed to be the most aware out of the group. He was the one who actually "escaped" in some way. Yet in the show he always ends up encompassed by each episode's focus. In episode one he disliked the idea of working and stayed away, but after the phone call was sucked in immediately. In episode two he wanted to be dead, he wanted to be the focus of the episode, but by the time passed and Duck was in the grave, he kept reminding Yellow "No he's gone, let's keep things moving with this new guy now." And in Family he fully backed away from Yellow and Duck, fully encapsulated by the idea of family. Makes me wonder ig something happened to him after the YT series ended (if it fits into the canon at all)

To be honest when I saw this episode, it made me look into myself alot. Like I just questioned myself if I was a worm and it opened my eyes a little. Great episode

One of my best friends treated me horribly for over two years. She manipulated my emotions, used me as her therapist (while knowing I was struggling mentally), and never talked to me as just a friend. She always wanted something. I was scared to tell her because she was just so fragile. I felt like a bad person. She would get mad at me over nothing, leave me on read for days, and then come back to trauma dump. It really impacted my health. Then, out of nowhere, she blocked me and two other close friends. She had found a new friend group. She didn’t need me anymore. I think I’m still grieving. I miss being needed, as toxic as it was for both of us. I miss the love bombing and “you keep me alive, I love you”. I miss her, even though I shouldn’t. No one tells you how to get your own closure when you didn’t even get to leave.

I know I'm just a passing stranger on the internet, but I want to say, once you find more functional and non-toxic friends, and be a good friend yourself, people generally tend to open up and lean on one another for support. One day you'll find people who will tell you "I love you and you make my life better." with no strings attached.

@@nicolasnamed thank you, I appreciate that. I’ve met people who truly care about me as a person, and allow me to be vulnerable too. I’m learning about boundaries and trust. I’ve still got a long way to go, but I’m figuring it out.

Incoherent relationships like this are unfortunately not always black and white like warren. Some people are stumbling through a fog of confusion and that's what makes them the way they are. And unfortunately, what divides "trauma dumping" and venting is repetition and the receptivity of the person being spoken to. Some people don't mind if you vent. Some find it draining. Others feel productive when they get to listen. I do. Maybe she'll learn healthier habits. Some day. Though if you ask me, the best way to deal with some of these people is to occupy and engage. ie: "wow that sucks. Wanna do something? Get your mind off it?". Most of these people just have no positive social interactions in their daily life and don't know the appropriate way to act anymore. The kick of consistent positive interactions robs them of the social haze they're in and makes them stop. Usually. Unless they're warren.

Apart of the ususal apreciación of the message, aesthethic and great visual simbolism. This chapter brokes my hearth bro. I never fell so bad for yellow guy, even when he was about to die or at least convinced of that before, he never was so convinced it was all his fault or seemed so tired like here. Maybe is a bit more personal, but inception part where he goes even deeper into his mind almost makes me cry. I fortuantelly can't say I was neglected or that I doubt the people responsable for me at chilhood loved me , but even tought, that felling is very familiar.

Never got why people said this episode was bad? Yeah, in comparison to the others it's probably the weakest, but Warren is honestly so effective at being an annoying character. The way he ruins everything so bad that even the Brain friends leave, it's an absolute riot to me.

As someone who had to tolerate annoying people i felt kinda of bad for Warren at the end because he is so easily dislikable and u know it makes me kinda sad

I really like the usage of the term “restaurant style meal” by Warren the worm (EAGLE) because while it IS comedic, it also holds a little bit of deeper meaning, in many broken households the parents will cook but the family will all eat separately, where as, with a “restaurant style meal” you’re all eating and talking together because you want to spend time together. Obviously that doesn’t excuse Warrens toxic behavior, but I think that out of all the teachers he would’ve had the highest chance of rehabilitation if he was taught healthy relationship skills and coping methods from Leslie. Idk maybe I’m reading into it too much but that’s just my take on it.

When you have a fear of worms watching this video; This is fine. When it becomes realistic: OH F-

Yep, the personality of Warren rhymes with the personality of my abuser. I knew to hate him before I heard his voice and knew his personality.

As someone with DID, I cannot express enough how extra terrifying this is. One of those very visceral feelings of fear. Of going deeper and deeper into dissociation as further distressed, and being hunted. And throw in Yellow's memory issues and it's even easier for me to project onto. Warren the Eagle is the name he chose for himself, to seem strong and brave and cool. But it also works naturally, as he's honestly a very effective predator.

Great video, it's a good analysis of this episode that I feel is really layered, so I'm glad you could cover this! To also give personal input about the comment at 38:44, I didn't find the "realization" weird because I see that it has more meaning than just being literal. Since Red and Duck had many negative and probably personal comments towards Yellow's capability earlier in the episode, and the diagnosis being emphasized by the "worm in your brain" song at the end, I think the meaning on the diagnosis isn't just about Warren being inside Yellow's brain, but also about how negative and demeaning comments can "worm" its way into your mind, attacking your confidence and happiness. The "worm" described by the doctor and the reaction of the remaining 2 puppets may reflect how they realize what they had said had heavily affected Yellow and sent him into the dissociative state. Pulling out Warren with the tools and Yellow becoming significantly better may be a physical representation of "getting rid" of the negative thoughts. I hope my take makes sense, can't explain my words well but still, nice video!

I had toxic friends in high school, girls that only kept me around to bully me and make them feel better about their sad lives. When i tell you this episode resonated with me and just made me upset in the best way possible.

Ive been obsessed with this episode and all its little details. The dialogue/voice of Warren is really interesting in how much it tells us about him and what he’s been through. Its a really well done portrayal of insecurity and how it can influence our relatioships. Great dissection!

I had a “friend” in high school just like warren. He’d always take time to insult any of us behind our backs and always try to shove our ideas onto us. He’d leave after a convoluted scheme from another friend, but no one really bummed about it. The Who made the plan even called out how everything became less toxic in the group. Honestly I’m more surprised a guy more toxic than Chernobyl even stayed for as long as he did.

This episode is actually one of my favorites because it points out the toxic people irl that no one talks about. Like you said at 41:30 people just shrug it off
