I feel Waterworld is very underrated. I think it was panned because Costner was riding high at the time, and Waterworld was the most expensive movie made at that point, so people just wanted to tear it down.

Chances are you'll die. That catamaran is one of the riskiest watercrafts I've seen. The only way the Mariner presumably can survive on something like that is because he can breathe underwater and swim inhumanely fast.

Dry land is the epitome of all beliefs in water world and dirt could only come from dry land so it is seen as the holy Grail to everyone. The dirt he had was most likely gathered from under water by him, then jarred and allowed to dry out. His story of how he came about it was just that, a story. Paper is also a holy relic, much like the ark of the covenant would be to us. Paper obviously doesn't last well around water, so any that survived the hundreds of years since before the deluge are considered treasures...

if this atoll was real my guess is it would be somewhere like midway island or the northern marianas. lots of coral atolls there that could be built on.

The idea is they're not built on anything, the water level is so high that even old mountains don't come close to the surface. The only part of the world poking out of the water was Mount Everest. The Atolls are just floating cities cobbled together from whatever people were able to save during the great floods. Nothing under em but water for miles.

It is an interesting concept for sure though I guess there's not too much they could do to expand it. After all I would like to think there is no bigger threat then the smokers who are all destroyed in this film.
